So, I had a backlog of around 180 games - all games I actually want to play - and since the beginning of December I've now played through 14 of them. I'm making good progress but it will still take me over 3 years to complete at this rate, but that doesn't bother me because I'm having a lot of fun.

That’s awesome! And that is a good way of framing the process of completing the backlog!

Don't aim to finish. Aim to have fun. Stop playing once you've had enough, and move on to the next game you have the most interest in.

I think it's better to redefine what a backlog is. It shouldn't be every game you own since you don't even know if you'll like each game you play. That's just your collection. Your backlog should consist of the games you've played that you want to finish, but just haven't yet. It makes the list of games in your backlog much smaller with this mindset

I started this at the same time DarylTalksGames did with my own spreadsheet. It went well, I didn't finish everything, I don't think I ever will. But it makes it easier to pick games, easier to play games I wasn't sure I wanted to stick with, and easier to put games down if I knew there was nothing they could do for me. I've kept the list going this year and I'm I look forward to your journey and how it went in a year's time.

Looks like some fun games on your list. I also had some inspiration from Daryl talks games. I didn't set any deadlines, but i made my way through a handful of fun games and ticking them off the list helped with some motivation to at least start them. Hope you enjoy some of the games you got there

Yeah it’s a great motivator, I didn’t really set a hard deadline but I would like to challenge myself to play many in a year

Making my spreadsheet a few weeks ago was a daunting task - 600+ games going all the way back to the 80's. Finishing will also a daunting task. But I don't *need* to finish it. I do know from tracking the last couple years is that I can complete roughly 30-40 games per year. That's considerably more than the number of new releases I care care about. I *can* do this. My problem was replaying comfort games over and over in my early life, as well as getting addicted to the "infinite" games that you can never truly finish. For me it was 2000 hours of Factorio, 1000 hours of From the Depths, you get the idea. For you it might be multiplayer games, or some free to play live service. I'm not saying don't play these games, but don't let them take over your gaming life. Approaches like these work. I've completed roughly 500 games over the course of my life that I can remember. 1/5 of those are in the last 3 years when I sat down and decided to really work on that backlog.

My backlog was 20-30 games, doesn’t sound like a lot however I am a trophy hunter and getting the plat marked the end of my playthroughs. Took almost 2 years. It doesn’t feel super special or anything but that’s not what doing the backlog is for. It to not have that unfinished pile taking up mental space. That is the real reward. I then started warhammer and now I have a small pile of unfinished minis that I’m working through. One backlog traded for the other.

I was there. I just made the tough call and decided to rip and tear till the job is done. And I got rid of a LOT of games. I went from owning like 2k+ games to owning 540. All of that crunching definitely make it so I can tell what I actually care about playing. But it's still soul-crushing and it weighs on me and has impacted my enjoyment with gaming completely presently. I'm looking forward to crunch it down more and just get through this damn thing. but I cannot wait until the day i'm free of it.

i've tried a similar approach of making a list of all my games on my website and going through them one by one. so far that hasn't worked at all. having 3-4 hours to play games every day is not enough to get through a backlog of more than 150 switch games and more than 800 unplayed steam games - especially when most games i enjoy are rpgs and jrpgs which easily eat up 100 hours or more each. what helped a bit was to just ignore steam alltogether. now i only play games on the switch and use the pc for everything non-gaming. a problem i encountered after stopping to buy steam games was that i started to buy 6-10 switch games a month while only being able to beat 1 or 2 in that time. at least they look good in my shelves. recently i started to just gift switch games to my fiancee, which seems to be the perfect solution. i can focus on my backlog and still get all the new games i want to play sooner or later, but it's her pile of shame that keeps on growing and not mine.
@Summer_and_Rain11 ай бұрын
I gave my dad DVDs I wanted to watch, so I totally get that solution XD
@ggpandapants132211 ай бұрын
Yeah some games are long which makes tackling the backlog harder, but it’s a good solution to just start with what you can handle and ignore the rest. Also gifting is a good way to get around the guilt of buying games when you already have so many
@obake62908 ай бұрын
It helps to add limits to what you buy. Could do that in a few ways: $$$ / month 1-2 new games / month Or some rule like "Only buy a new game when I finish one or two" This will probably balloon your wishlist, but at least with limits like these you'll have to prioritize purchases rather than buying all the things.

Ever since 2023 I’ve been trying to finish the majority of my backlog. I finished 49 games last year and 10 so far this year. Currently working on Assassin’s Creed Mirage. I feel like things have gone rocky over the last year but now I’m smoothly going through games, I just stick to games I like. If there’s a game I dislike or can’t get into I either don’t return or save for later. Now I have a nice list I’m cracking through. More games will come and some I’ll return too. I’ll never finish my backlog but I don’t have too.

I have been tackling my backlog on and off for a while now. Being able to look back on what I have completed is helpful. This year I am focusing on getting through three games: Persona 5 royal, Hades and Immortal Fenyx rising. Happy to say I made it through Persona 5 royal and can now stop trying to evade seeing spoilers and clip from the game (game youtubers love showing persona 5 clips) I am looking forward to seeing what you learned from all of this next year. :)

I’ve always got over 200 in my backlog. I’ll whittle it down but then I get good stuff on sale or some big new releases I’m excited for, and I’m back up. I prioritize bigger file sizes and if I don’t like something I move on. Finally played The Outer Worlds recently after getting years ago and LOVED it! Then tried the new Prince of Persia and moved on after 11 hours as I wasn’t liking it. And that’s ok.

I partially enjoyed this video but having watched the video that clearly inspired this from DTG a few times, this got too difficult to watch. So many seemingly direct pulls from the DTG video, from starting with the personal piece (though again, enjoyed that, I don't see the hyrule games mentioned very often), to the peace vs emptiness arguing sides, to the literal "man" quote. I hope your backlog journey goes well, but try to write more about your own research and feelings in your scripts maybe. Just my two cents. All the best bro

Having a shit rig is what's stopped me from playing. I've got the money to buy a new one but I can't really get myself to do it considering the cost of living never stops increasing. But even thinking about it is getting me more excited than I have been in like 20 years. If I end up doing it I'd probably be able to play games like they're a full time job for 3 years and still probably have a hundred or so games left to play.
