Hi, I know this video is a few months old now, but Thanks! I wanted a recumbent trike due to some health reasons. I test rode a cat trike locally, it the cost did it for me, even though it’s very nice. Well, I shopped around for weeks, even though I ran across the Performer bikes right away and fell for the JC26X! What you get, fenders, a rack, and more, plus the performance, etc... I was sold and placed the order. Took 3 weeks to get, one evening to build, first time builder too. I absolutely love my 26X! I do wish the seat was a little higher and wider, which I’m going to custom fit an I e seat (sorry Performer). So the. I found your factory tour video and watched that like 3 times. I was proud to be a performer owner! The owner takes great pride in his work and it shows. Now this. I’d, love it. Love what you’re doing too! Thanks buddy and stay safe.

I am currently riding a older Performer Trike X I purchased this last July. I believe it is around 10 to 15 years old. It has rear suspension and a 26 Inch Rear wheel and 20's on the front. Just ordered from George a few parts directly from the factory. Plans are to tear it down this winter and do a repaint. Looking at a late 1969 Dodge color... Sublime Green with Pearl essence added. Eventually maybe a E-power option. It has the mesh seat and I will be adding the Ventisit Seat pad for a bit more comfort. I have issues with my hands and back when I ride my standard bicycle but none on my trike. So far I have peddled close to 300 miles on it. Not as many as you but I am also 63 years old and you got to start somewhere so why not ride a trike... I Like It! Keep on Pumping!

Matt, you have to tell George that his FRP bike that you rode is the same as the one I ride, and that there are some improvements he needs to work out... First the 26 inch wheel in the back is only a 1.38 x 26 which is ok but too close to the rain guard and it rubs like crazy when loaded... The rack in the back is great but pushes onto the supports of the rain guard. Tell him that he needs to place some type of chain skip protector on the front derailleur system which I managed to do quite easily with an after market guard that has prevented the chain from rubbing off all the paint on the front. All in all I love the bike and look forward to future advances by Performer. I cannot wait to see what he has in stored for you! Tell him to keep the price down if all possible... this was the driving factor for me to purchase the Performer model.

Along with the many Performer owners who have purchased a BIG LEAF canopy from me and the relationship I've had with Performer, the mutual enrichment has been nothing short of, 'fun'. I've got a performer jc70 like the one matt is riding in the video and I love it. It's a great starter trike. Best value in trike, but it has it's a few things that could be improved. First and foremost they need to ditch direct steer and go to an indirect setup. Second they really need to upgrade the idler pulley on this trike. And third, even though this trike is built for a 700 rear, the rear seat still sits too close to the tire. I had to make a custom shim to keep the seat off the tire after I got a new set of schwalbe tires.

Mat, I'm another person who has now become more interested in touring using a trike for the first time after following your journey. I did my first bicycle touring exactly ten years ago. I've seen a few trike tourers on the road but never really interested. I'll consider of getting a Performer only if it has full-suspension, foldable, light, durable and flexible with gear, brake, wheel-size, color options and importantly adjustable sitting positions (including sitting distance, level: same/lower/higher than pedals and sitting more upright/layback. One won't know this setup until one owns one and rides several 100s of kilometers). A trike should be configurable for a short or tall person. Another word, the part where a crankset fitted on should be shortenable/extendable plus seat distance adjustable, it'll truly become one-size fits all trike. I would encourage you to work with Perfomer Manufacturer toward having your own model name out in the market i.e. "Performer JaYoe" for its touring capacity trike. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

One of the many things that you should consider a must to be added is the PINION gearing system. Especially when you're currently dealing with different physical issues that are reoccurring and plus the most current. Having any type of assist is a great idea, especially when it comes to maintaining your physical health and even strengthening yourself with ease. Instead of overdoing yourself and having a worse physical situation to deal with later. When I was riding and return to riding, I will be making sure that a pedal assist of some type is involved. I ride both quite a bit to have a medium or all around setup, only one trike to ride that was being set specially to me, I think I would go with a 24” rear setup. This would give ya a little more top end and yet still be easier to push on the climbs. I have been dabbling with a 24” setup for a lil while and really like it. It’s almost perfect and gives ya the best of both worlds. Also.... thought about the canopy..... If you had JAGGER in the fold on this, you could possibly have your electro logo in the canopy. I've heard that most people find it disconcerting when they first sit in a deeper reclined recumbent, but before long they realize that they prefer it. It's also more aerodynamic, so you might try it out for a bit before making up your mind. I'm certain that you'll find you prefer the 26" rear wheel. The 20" will get out of the blocks faster, but once you get going the 26" will give you a higher top speed for the same amount of energy.

If you can't charge the battery you have to drag 10 kilo extra up the mountain. Matt is doing 100km and more already. I don't think e-assist will add much as for distance in his case.
@86daily6 жыл бұрын
drie: I don't think you have looked at the details of the electric units. He will be able to go up the hills easier and recharge on the way down instead of using his breaks. He should be able to do 100 miles instead of a hundred km. I've done a 100 miles a day on a regular bicycle in Korea, Seoul to Pusan and back in a week in 1975. That means his long climbs will turn to a pleasure and he will make more drone flights. More pleasant time more everything.
@driewiel6 жыл бұрын
I have e-assist myself on one of my trikes. I know what it is. But Matt will be traveling in countries where there isn't a wall socket every night. And a hub motor will only charge the battery for a small part going downhill. The guy is doing metric centuries already. If he was struggling like me, that would be another story. Now if he wants to use e-assist, then that is his decision. Yes uphill will be easy. But if you didn't have the opportunity to completely charge the battery, going up will be less fun. It needs even more planning. A 14Ah battery or so takes 8 hours to fully charge. Forget for a moment and next morning you're in trouble. I'm not even mentioning the chance something will break. All in all e-assist is more to worry about. People should realize that. You will lose some of the freedom cycling gives. Constantly you are watching how much battery power you have left. Wild camping will be a thing of the past. And oh I had a 2x80 watt solar roof on my last trip too. It gave me 30km extra on a day at most in the sun. If you don't have sun all day the solar panels may even make you slower. Unfortunately the technology is not quite there to be 100% independent from wall charging. If only that were true. Should Matt try e-assist? Well I think he should. But be careful. to think it is the holy grail. Very few world travelers use e-assist, and for a reason. They keep the weight down and just go slower uphill.
@86daily6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your experience on the electric-those were great comments. Maybe the newer batteries will charge more quickly and therefore will recharge better on the down hills. Eight hours sound excessive. As for the panels they too have improve greatly lately, I'm not sure what you have.
@driewiel6 жыл бұрын
I paid 85 Euro each for my 80 watt flexible panels from AliExpress. There is probably better. And maybe a larger battery and more expensive booster will increase performance. I do know that just a single panel like this kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3Pdf3ywZ714g9E will hardly do anything. I like the work of these guys though! Could be the future. The data from the Sun Trip will be available soon. Jack Butler got 1400wh out of his solar trailer in a good day. That's more like it!

I like the performer really do and it's a good option because of the price. One thing I don't like it the seat. Every time I look at a promotional video for the performer the seat is one thing that puts me off. To be honest my own thoughts on it are that having an option of a seat like on the green speed would be good. Like you could choose to have one seat or another shipped with the trike. Mainly it's for packing. With that greenspeed seat you can take the mesh off. it really does pack away. Shipping on an international flight seems a good option with the performer but not so much with that seat. Really to take the rig apart and pack it into the smallest space possible is very important to me.

Can you test build a full option trike thats 2/3 lower in price so more poeple can drive one they cost like a small car not everyone can afford 6k and you already have really good bikes for 2k so. why paying more for that 1wheel?

I am watching this with interest. Performer have great prices in comparison to Western brands but unfortunately one has to choose between a folding trike and a rear suspension. I hope they introduce a new model which folds, has a full suspension and as a an option can have an electric assist added if needed. Quite a lot of people (including me) look to trikes due to back pain caused by normal bikes so full suspension on a more affordable trike would be fantastic.

IF....the trike is direct steer like the Performer in this video, you definitely can use armrests. And I don't mean wrist rest. No, armrest. Wrist rests will do nothing. Because that will give you much more control over the steering, especially with one hand. I have done 1800km this summer on my homebuilt trike with lets say, no so perfect geometry. Only with the armrests I could do fast downhills and relax. On a trike with indirect 'under the seat' steer, armrest will add comfort. But you can do without as for stability. Or use wrist rest. Direct steer is lighter and stronger. It is a choice one makes. Both have + and -
@JaYoeNation6 жыл бұрын
Great points
@driewiel6 жыл бұрын
Your seat side bags are vital. Would be great if those mounts are armrests at the same time. Also 20 inch rear wheel is better for touring. Smaller gears, lower center of gravity, more rigid. Not saying you can't tour with a larger wheel. Then e-assist. Well I used a 500 watt Bafang on my trip to Switzerland. Great. But the quality of the trike should be based on pedal power alone!!! With a large enough motor you can move the Rock of Gibraltar. E-assist also makes your ride far more nervous. You will miss the relaxation cycling offers. Constantly checking if you don't run out of battery power is not fun. So be careful to make the step.
@360.O.A.Videos6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this comment . I did not think about the fact that direct steering is stronger . 😊
@driewiel6 жыл бұрын
Less parts. Easier to adjust track with the single tie-rod. But you need more steering input then indirect. Work a little harder. Especially on bumps and road crown. Indirect is easier to control with smaller movement of your hand-wrist In theory and if you got geometry and design right. In case of my homebuilt trike I went back to direct steer because it was more reliable even though the geometry is far from perfect. The armrests make all the difference. They're not some silly gadget. If you write you rest your arm too. Try write with your arm stretched in front of you and it will look a mess.

He was made an offer he could not refuse. Although maybe he would have liked to. Performer has not been on par yet with HP or ICE or Catrike or Greenspeed or some of the others out there. But lets see what they come up with. I'm certainly not saying Performer is a bad product! I hope they continue to make affordable models of great quality. And perhaps develop a more high end trike that can compete with the 'established' manufacturers. From what I have seen in the videos Performer is quite established already. While others have come and gone. It is a very small and difficult market.
@driewiel6 жыл бұрын
The price. ICE and HP are far more expensive so you can expect a better trike. No shame in that. ICE has the best handling. I could do 200km/h downhill if there was such a hill and still roll a cigarette. Which I did at 90km/h BTW. Although you shouldn't smoke to start with. HP is probably more comfortable and has the better suspension. Catrike is light and stable. They shouldn't do too much folding and suspension and stuff. But that's my opinion. Greenspeed made some bad trikes. Series 1 GT and X have the wrong geometry. Don't know who messed up? All the rest is a blast. Then we have Steintrikes, Windcheetah, couple of others. Again Performer is a excellent quality. Can't go wrong. But if you were to compare it to say an ICE VTX or something without looking at the price, the choice would be obvious. you can't build a VTX or HP FS for $1500. Performer will catch up eventually. It appears as they are going to upgrade their frames and models. and those will be more expensive. It takes time to sort out geometry, handling, ergonomics. The first ICE trikes had plenty flaws. And each time they bring newer models the changes are relatively small steps in order not to risk design shortcomings. Don't fix what isn't broken. But if you are a bit behind then you try to catch up in bigger steps. So Performer wants a world traveler to do the testing. I can understand that. I spin around the block is very different from touring in all sorts of terrain and conditions. and this is where Greenspeed and ICE and HP have the experience. People doing long distance tours are prepared to spend big bucks on their equipment. So they buy 'the best'. And 'the best' mostly means 'the most expensive you can afford'.

Performer current lineup is a better value, but not quite up to HP, however, Matt's customized trike will probably be as least as good as a Scorpion FS 26.

The most important thing of any trike is that you are comfortable. It is hard to beat the HP seat. It is not the fastest or lightest trike. I also find HP always kinda bulky. In typical German fashion they always use oversized materials. What can easily be an 8mm bolt, is 10mm on a HP. An ICE trike is less overkill. Better thought out. HP is more like: OK. Lets grab a chunk of metal and weld it on. ICE and HP are both on top of the list. Followed by Greenspeed, Catrike, and then the rest. Performer is somewhere in the middle. It would be a miracle if they can develop a trike as good as a FS HP. in just a couple of months. I don't think that is a problem. As long Matt can do his thing with camera and touring he is simply testing for Performer. After that he can return to his HP Scorp if he wishes.

if you want my advice, performer need to make a proper racing trike. forget carbon fiber, as weight isnt that important. make it out of aluminium or even steel to keep costs down. whats REALLY important is aerodynamics and aesthetics (which usually go together on a recumbent). need to lengthen that frame out so the rear wheel doesnt look like its been shoved under the seat, which iisnt a good look. the trike should be modelled on the catrike 700, ice vtx and gs aero, which are all elegant designs, but are all really expensive and thus unafordable to most people. the seat should be at 23 degrees or preferably less. the seat should also be as low to ground as possible for low center of gravity. the lower stance will allow a narower track which gives a smaller frontal area. come on performer, build us a really fast racing trike, for a keen price. thats what people actually want.

Hello Matt . I think I prefer the Velotechnik steering system as my arms are more protected from the outside world . If you are in a jam other vehicles risk to harm to you if your hands are outside or near the driving line of cars . If your arms go to much upwards you will have blood return problems I think . And your head on a cousin .... I do not believe in that for long distances ... I would electrify my trike with a serious solar panel in complete autonomy . Contact please : "Déclic éco ". They can help you to have a formula one in electric solar powered long distance purpose trike .
