@@Bryaaammnnn179saw him some years ago so it might have changed since then(i doubt it) but his show was very basic, video wall with some lazy kung fu kenny narrative and just did the songs word for word. That shit is not really entertaining. Its better than full backing track concerts but not as good as a kanye/travis scott full stage. Not to mention ive seen plenty of artists from plenty of genres. An aspect of this that no one is talking about is the fact that a lot of these rappers don't actually take pride in their work. Most of these rappers don't look at themselves as artists and don't look at their songs as works of art. To them it's just a paycheck. They hear a beat they like and they rap some generic lyrics over it. As much sh!t as Kanye gets for his antics, one thing you can never say about him is that he doesn't care. He looks at his music as art and when he performs, he performs with a sense of pride in his work and undeniable passion. A lot of these rappers are just in it for the money.

Rap has always had this problem, it’s just now fans can see through the BS. I have never seen a musical artist believe their own hype as much as rappers do. Most of these dudes (and yes, it’s mostly the male rappers) come high, drunk, unenthusiastic and unprepared to their own shows. Every other genre goes above and beyond to put on a once-in-a-lifetime performance that you can only get at a live show. These dudes are too cool to actually perform, they barely perform in the studio, honestly. I’m glad they lost some of that ticket money, go earn those fans back.

As someone who’s worked in the music industry, here’s my take on what happened: Record label A&Rs used to go and see an artist perform before signing that artist. Most artists prior to social media, streaming, KZbin and Tik Tok, had experience performing, before being signed. Now artists are signed based on views, streams, and followers. Nobody in current hip-hop is putting on a good show because 1. they don’t have experience performing, some haven’t really done shows prior to being signed, and 2. They’re not required to be able to do a good show. Maybe if concert sales really dwindle things will change. We’ll see……..

Most artists buy followers, streams, and fake comments. Their numbers are inflated and they book venues that are way too big. On top of that these rappers don’t reinvest into themselves and rather spend money on flexing and that’s why most of them stay broke no matter how much they make because they got paid advancements by their labels. Also most of their main audience are teenagers and young adults who don’t necessarily have the money to spend on those tickets bc or at concessions. If they don’t spend money at the bar then the venue will have to recoup it in charging a higher rental for the venue. I’ve noticed a trend in higher tickets and alcohol prices at festivals too and there is never a line at those bars

Tyler, the Creator is by far the most humble to their fans. Tyler compared to other artists, Charges less for his concerts (300 front row vip where most artists charge 1k+ for the same). He is constantly engaging with his fans even durring the show. If you look up his start time durring the 2022 tour, every show started ON TIME AT (roughly) THE SAME TIME. He gave each of his openers more time than they even wanted because he wanted Kali and Vince to play more of their Underrated songs and to preform a whole ass version of their own concert. (Teezo- 30 min, Vince - 45 min, Kali - 60 min, Tyler 90 min) Someone literally asked me how long till tyler went on (intermission between Kali and Tyler), Since i had went to multiple shows, i looked at the stage and saw where they were on setting it up (they were literally finalizing the pyro), looked at my watch, and told her "should start in about 5 minutes" and i was right because Tyler was ACTUALLY ON TIME.

One of the few newer rappers that deserves even way more recognition for her work is Little Simz. She's genuinely so good at what she does and so many of these nothing "rappers" take her over in popularity and it's just not fair. Her stage presence is awesome and she puts on one hell of a show. She doesn't even leave in track vocals during live performances. She raps all of her songs. And she has a live band behind her. A big problem with many of these other "rappers" is that they're too comfortable being lazy. They get praised for their mediocrity. So they know they don't have to try hard. But now it's coming to bite them in the face that people praising them online are realizing that it's not worth $200 to see these people sort of walk around a stage and talk over loud backing tracks.

I’m so glad you made a video about this, so many rap artists are charging high prices and doing the bare minimum while you have artists like The Weeknd doing full on production design or a 81 year old Paul McCartney that puts on a 3 hour show and actually sings the entire show while playing different instruments live. These rap artists should not be charging that high if they are not putting in the time and effort.

As somebody who is more into indie rock, I found this video to be really interesting and enlightening. I agree, I can't imagine paying $200+ to see somebody walk back and forth (jumping occasionally) on a bare stage. The fans deserve better. Most of the concerts I go to are at smaller venues, usually places that are 300 - 500 capacity, so the prices tend to be a lot cheaper ($25 - $50). I prefer those more intimate settings, and it's great to see the rest of the band up there performing with the singer.

Indie and alt rock (actually, all strains of the indie scene) is the place to be for live show goers. It helps in that industry that the musicianship isn't as outsourced to producers. It seems like a lot of the insane shenanigans of artists being late to shows seem to come heavily from the rap and R&B industry. I have to respect Beyonce when I saw her two weeks ago because she did NOT do that. She was ready before 9:40pm and went right to business with the show.

What if I tell you that there's a male rapper out there completely unknown to the rap scene, that not only raps with great speed & skills with lots of bars, switch flow and cadences, but he also dance as well with well thought choreography, and changes outfit as well, lastly he also sings not just a "little" but he really sings well with a guitar and a piano during his concerts. He has an actual live band at the back along with his personal back-up dancers who really admires him. And unlike other artist, he can completely write, compose and produce his songs completely on his own. Not just that, he also produce songs for other artists as well and actively interacts with the crowd during his concerts and of course he's never late or do any excuses. He'd still rap and sing even when he's sick, and even when he had an accident where he got hit by a car when he was out on a rainy day to deliver food (when he was still a delivery boy), he still insist on dancing on stage even when he already broke and dislocated his shoulder he still endured the pain just to perform. He doesn't want to cancel anything especially when there's people waiting for him to perform. Anyways, his fans are also strangely very kind to each other like they'd even give each other free stuff and would even hold hands when entering his concert to prevent chaos that may cause inconveniences to the rapper. After the concerts, the fans themselves would voluntarily pick up the trash and clean the Arena before leaving. And his rap songs has nothing to do with sex & drugs. Basically he's not the typical trash rappers who has meaningless lyrics with no substance. His raps are deep that talks about the sickness of society especially capitalism and negative emotions of humans like anger, fear, jealously, regret, depression, greed, pain, suicidal thoughts, social anxiety, etc. But most of his song ending gives hope to the people who needed it. Also those type of songs are completely for free by the way. Basically he would also release albums for free and by doing so he won't gain any profit from it, and not only that, his songs won't appear in charts as well. Causing him not to be known by the public and besides you'll never EVER hear his song played on radio since they don't wanna play it since he's not welcome from the industry.

Growing up, I was a big heavy metal fan and I went to a lot of concerts. $200 to watch someone walk back and forth rapping half their song over a backing track is absolutely WILD to me. You make a good point about artists like Drake and Beyonce; When you pay those obscene ticket prices, you're paying for a massive production that justifies it's value. Obviously, rap is a lot more popular than metal so the demand and price for tickets is going to be a lot higher, but I regularly paid $20-40 to watch my favorite bands play on time, 100% live, from the vocals to the instruments to the antics of the frontman for an hour+ straight. It genuinely boggles my mind that more popular artists can charge absolutely insane prices and then not even show up on time. It really seems like they take their fans for granted or even see them as a nuisance. I remember I saw a Trivium show and the frontman stopped the whole band mid song because people were getting too rowdy in general admission and some girl was getting pushed around; He told them to knock that shit off and behave, and once he confirmed everything was good, the whole band picked the song up on the bar they left off on. When you don't make the most popular type of music, you don't have the luxury of taking ANY of the people who support you for granted. I wish these fellas would recognize what a blessing it is to even think about charging $200 a ticket and give their fans the love, respect and performances they deserve. That being said, big respect to the artists who respect their fans, the craft and go out there every night and kill that shit. That's the blueprint.

@@BetiBooler Appreciate you mang. A lot of popular rappers (and other popular artists) either have mad industry support or blow up off of one song and never go through the old school live-show grind. I was lucky enough to see The Black Dahlia Murder when Trevor was still alive and the amount of energy that band puts into their performances is nucking futz. People are less willing to roll the dice on certain rappers even showing up when the tickets cost an arm and a leg. Edit - hah! I commented too soon. I completely agree, a black emo child at heart, I have seen alternative bands perform their ass off in the middle of the Georgia heat at warped tour. They were singing their ass off with no back track for 2 months in the summer and still put on amazing show in every city. Amen. I was in the punk scene in the late 90s and early 2000s and it was amazing. Even the local bands at local shows for 50 people were outperforming rap artists. Warped Tour was amazing every year. I saw The Used who just absolutely killed it. The singer for AFI cut his hand open, rushed to the hospital to get stitched up, then came back to play on time and just blew our faces off. Rap just does not hold a candle to it. My favorite band right now is Band-Maid who are a Japanese hard rock/metal band and they’re doing an American tour right now for their 10-year anniversary and I’m dying to go to a concert for the first time in over 10 years because everybody’s saying that they put on a phenomenal show and their tickets are a fraction of American headliners.

It was amazing how they made people dance and vibe with them, you could see the connection between every musicians, they are DOING the show. Granted, this was back in Star Boy days so I’m not sure if/how his performances have changed since then, but man was it disappointing. He was over 2 hours late, his openers were all over the place energy wise, not to mention i think the soundcheck was barely done and things just sounded “off”. when he finally DID come on, I kid you not he was on stage for 30-40 minutes TOPS. This wasn’t a small, random arena towards the tail end of the tour. It was Barclays in Brooklyn. Since then I’ve had no inclination to see him live again. The best shows in my opinion as others have said (apart from the obvious big hitters like Beyoncé, Taylor, etc) are rock bands. They’re on stage for what feels like 2+ hours performing their hearts out.

I recently saw JID live and it was glorious to see a rapper deliver in all fronts, rapping absolutely everything with energy and passion. Something lacking in so many artists, and it’s worrying. Even worse, we’ve gotten used to it (artists barely singing/rapping or doing it with no clue in how to translate it to a live format, which sometimes means weird and forced deliveries). I see KZbin videos of live shows and a ton of comments are like “amazing performance” and I’m like… what? He’s barely done anything except bounce around and shouting! When an artist has done the homework and is capable of being in synch with their songs… it’s magical, nothing like it.
