Just a heads up. The Snowmobile Hall of Fame in St. Germain (about 15 miles west of Eagle River) is having their Ride with the Champs event that weekend. I'm from Ohio and attended that event twice. Expect to see a lot of classic sleds on the trail that weekend (if snow conditions improve). From my experience, carbide wear rods are a must. By Saturday afternoon, the corners will be blown out and icy. Studs in the track are not a must, but be cautious of icy hills and, if necessary, ride the edge of the trail in those situations for traction. The trails in that area cross a lot of lakes, so be prepared for that and investigate the ice conditions. I've only ever rode in Michigan (both lower and UP) and WI. The north woods area of WI is by far my favorite. Have fun and stay safe.
@OldSchoolArcticCats2 күн бұрын
Wow! That’s some great info, I’m going to check that event out, I’m going to make sure to check the ice and bring some extra carbide rods! Thanks for the tip!

I live in northern Wisconsin currently. February is a gamble. Especially this year and last. So far we don't have squat for snow you might end up having to detour your trip a little further north into the u.p. The downside is the trails on the weekend get absolutely beat on. Depending on your route you drive if you guys need anything give lmk I have a heated shop and any tools you could need.

Rode in northern MN and MI upper peninsula from 1990 - 2008. Jet for -20 @ 1400’ When i took my 2000 Thundercat mt to west yellowstone, I had to put shorter needles in the flat slide carbs and lighter weights in the primary clutch. The opposite will be your case. If you dont you will melt pistons in a mile because it will run lean. Safe travels

Hey Rocky Wouldn’t worry about studs unless ur going to worry about winning drag races. Only one reason i stud i like winning drag races lol!! Use to ride a 800 RMK back in 2000-2002 some conditions id get better hole shots than with studs and had a lot of fun doing 3/60’s or 180’s on ice or plowed icy roads lot of fun. But jetting id say ur going to want to jet up. Ur definitely going to be able to pull more weight in primary ur going to make more HP.
@OldSchoolArcticCats2 күн бұрын
Thanks Josh, I’m definitely going to look at bigger jets. Thanks for the tip about studs. I was going to add ice scratchers on all these sleds as well. My T cat has 60g weights in the primary right now..

Hey brother love the channel! I was just in Eagle River Jan 3-7. Booked a cabin a month before the trails opened hoping there’d be snow. Unfortunately the trails weren’t open but hopefully you’ll be good in February. If not, what we ended up doing was trailering another hour and 20 minutes north to Toivola MI. They get a lot of lake effect snow up there. Dropped the sleds at 4 Seasons Convenience Station…cost $15 for the whole day to park. Trail 3 runs right through the parking lot. Took trail 3 North to Houghton and hit trail 17 loop. It’s about a 90 mile ride round trip. Keep up the awesome content!

I live about 10 minutes from Eagle River and we got about four or 5 inches of fluffy snow over the last couple days. Before that there wasn’t much of anything. Luckily, it has been cold and the lakes and swamps are pretty frozen. A lot of the trails use lakes in this area. The UP is fairly decent with snow but you’d probably have to travel 30-40 minutes north of Eagle River to get to the heavier lake affect area. Hopefully in another month will have more snow but not much in the forecast for the next week or so. If you’re in Eagle River usually snowmobiling to the north and the east are the better trails as it’s all national forest that way. I’ve never had a snowmobile with studs and been here my whole life. I know the corners can be get kind of icy depending on the weather but generally if you slow down when you need to you’re good to go. They just had the vintage world championship races this weekend in Eagle River and the world championship races next weekend. Would be nice if there was snow for that so people could snowmobile to it but I’m not sure that’s going to happen. Hope you guys can make it and you got a long drive to get here!

Hey Rocky, Sounds like a good trip. Me and my buddy just got back from the UP. We put on about 350 miles over the last couple of days. Trails are kind of hit and miss up there right now, the only saving grace is lake affect snow, and some cold weather. Sounds like you’re looking for a lot of tips, I’ll probably just send you an email where I can explain a few things. I’ve been snowmobiling in northern Wisconsin in the UP for 40 years, and can probably give you some tips. I think the main things you’re going to need to worry about is a good set of carbides, making sure your slides are in good shape and your running gear is in working order. However, I’m kind of bummed. That’s the only weekend that I can’t make it up there because I have a prior family commitment. I’m sure you’ll have a great time!

I live in Phillips Wisconsin and I hope you love Wisconsin. I've lived here for all my life and snowmobiled since I was 5. ITS THE BEST
@MrJeffyb692 күн бұрын
I would say if you are just wanting to trail ride, if you have the means, stud them, even the minimum helps ( around 90 or so, depending on track) ! Now this also requires some tunnel protectors and the fact you can only stud up to a 1.75" lug track, normally, unless you install the screw in type studs that go into your lugs. Also keep in mind, if you stud, you want to go with a bigger carbide wear bar on your skis! Now I do see a lot of sleds in northern Michigan not doing any studs ( Assaults, Backcountry's, Riots, etc..) riding the trails all the time. It's a gamble, if its good snow, you're fine, but if it's icy 😲

We are in Phillips that weekend, west of Eagle River. Maybe we can meet somewhere. Hopefully we get some snow. Everything is closed right now. Last year most trails never opened. B&Bs are the key. Michigan, and the whole Midwest hasn't had a normal winter in years...4 or 5 at least. It's been pretty bad. Parts of the UP has snow now, and the longterm forecast looks decent...cold at least. If anyone in the Midwest has snow, it'll be the UP. I grew up riding in Michigan, and we mostly didn't have studs. They have some pros and cons. I wouldn't go through the trouble of studding your sleds just for a trip. I never liked the idea of a stud puncturing the heat exchanger. You'll be fine without studs.
