There is a book called Bullseye Mind by Raymond Prior about the mental side of shooting sports. I think you might find it a good read on this topic. I have seen a lot of up and coming competitors who just don't believe in themselves, or lose all faith as soon as something goes wrong. It takes a lot of mental practice to build up a belief in your skills and to fortify it so that a mistake or a failure does not cascade into the next shot. Whilst you do need to have a certain level of skill to allow the belief in your self to be realistic, a lot of people think the mental side of sports is so much harder to master because they only focus on the physical skills at the start.
