Here’s the thing about Lupin, the creator always had a, “let them do what they want” mentality to dubbing. So the writers can take creative liberties. That really doesn’t happen with a lot of Anime. When people complain about dubs, they forget that dub writers have a lot of guidelines they are forced to follow.
@DimT6703 жыл бұрын
Ofc they have to follow rules. A dub is supposed to convey the same as the original, its a translation basically This is the equivalent of a localisation not a translation
@wohdinhel3 жыл бұрын
Frankly, not all anime *should* be localized. When it is appropriate, and when it’s done well, it can be extremely good. Obviously Cowboy Bebop is pretty much the platinum standard for this, but Lupin is also a great example. Yes, Japanese and English Lupin are quite different in character and tone, but English Lupin is just as iconic, and to be honest, as a bilingual viewer, the humor in the English version lands WAY better because they’re not afraid to go into the surreal and play with tropes. Honestly the dub is well ahead of its time (hence all the “Lupin English dub is basically an abridged series” clip compilations).
@Sqwivig3 жыл бұрын
@@wohdinhel THIS!! EXACLTY THIS! The fact that people think a dub should be 100% accurate from the original is just not possible all the time, nor does it allow for a GOOD dub. There has to be re-writes and context changes and they have to match the lip flaps and etc, etc. I think it's ok for dubbers to take some creative liberties as long as it doesn't mess up lore, or doesn't completely change a character. Some of the best dubs are the ones that have some creative freedom to do cool new things. Space Dandy is a good example. For QT's voice they put a robot filter over the voice, and they didn't do that in the Japanese dub. He just sounds like a dude. But in English he sounds like a robot! Which is cool as hell!
@fionewatson49313 жыл бұрын
@@Sqwivig Those are some really good arguments guys! Space Dandy is a really good example, as that was dubbed into English first, and was intended to have that American-English flair. Good dubbing can add such a different experience, it's almost like you're watching a new bit of media. (It's like different voice actors playing the same characters, it's nice to see other people's take.)

The thing about dubs, is certain jokes or just the way phrases are structured in one language may make little sense or are just bad in another. Always give your dubbers some artistic license, the end product more often than not will benefit from it.

This is impeccable dubbing. They changed the words themselves, however, the meaning is delivered perfectly in a way that sounds completely natural. The fishing example shows it well. "Oh no! This would make me fall out of a 100 -year love affair!" May sound poetic and funny in japanese, but there is no natural way to say it in english. Instead of just changing Lupin's lines to sound more natural, they tweaked fujiko's too. Their exchange sounds so natural and the comedic timing is so good for that bit that I like it more than the source. This is better than most dialog written natively in english.

I usually do not like dub changes. But including a bit where the tower of Pisa looks like its upright just because Jigen is drunk and tilted is genius. One of the very rare moments a dub alteration made something better. Still don't care for the more modern pop culture references in the dub, but the high highs outweigh the lows for me.
