There's some disagreement over Alex White's villains, discuss the realism of seemingly unrealistic situations, how the book did things that Voodoo doesn't normally like but made him absolutely enjoy, whether or not anyone is truly likeable, and plenty more!
There are a couple of pronoun slip-ups so please forgive us there. If you haven't already watched our previous episode, Alex White joined us on the podcast last episode to talk about the writing of Alien: Into Charybdis. Be sure to go check that out! • Crafting A Complex Ali...

Tbh I felt this was at best a 6/10. The villain is dreadfully ham, and for the experienced bad-ass we are constantly told she is, a bit of an incompetent idiot, to the point of being a bad cartoon villain. I agree Shy is a horrible choice for a focal character, as she isn't just flawed, almost every character in the Alien franchise is flawed. Shy is just plain nasty. The absolute obsession with America and Iran is distracting as hell. I mean has any alien material ever mentioned nationality to anywhere near this level? Not corporations. Not political bodies, nationalities. Constantly. Over and over. And the choice of those nations with the political issues going on when the book was written and came out felt like bad taste. And absolutely criminally, the colony and surrounding geography are really really cool, and well set up early on.... And then nothing interesting is really done with it. Just like the midnighters were wasted.

@@BlueMarsalis I haven't finished the book yet. But do you really think that's a good reply from you? At least he justifies his opinion, while you are simply attacking someone personally. Currently, the representation of the political parties doesn't bother me in the least, I have to admit that they irritated me a bit, because I'm not used to that from alien stories. But I do not mind. And the location and the setting is definitely a good choice .

I have to admit that I cannot understand your criticism regarding the current political situation. If a story that takes place in 200 years in the future has to take something like that into account, then I don't understand why you seem to have no problem with so many other things in the alien universe. I don't think the author has the slightest bit of bad taste here. On the contrary, I find it refreshing to read about Iranians who don't seem like one-dimensional villains.

i also felt that the aliens were dealt with too quickly when they came out of the crashed ship. there was no dread for me, it was like trapping ants. sea of sorrows had much more of a threat present. this book just threw them in cages. does anyone else agree or am i wrong?

@@trevorfrenk4137 I do agree. They were rather trivialised... Outside of the rather brutal scene with the colonists, but they as a threat could have been replaced with anything. Be it zombies, plague infected murderers (given 28weeks later had that exact scene), or even just nerve gas being pumped into the room (with a little minimal rewriting), for their roll in the plot. Then the big villain who has ALL the experience killing aliens goes and feeds her men to them for no particular gain what so ever (when the plot already had an excuse to get rid of almost all of her men so the aliens aren't even needed there either).

@@BlueMarsalis perhaps I did over state it a little. But Shy is a self serving, hypocrite. She very strongly wants to get a guy fired for creeping on her... While being a creep herself, and extremely upset by the very suggestion that she might have to be laid off due to shortage of funds (when she's well aware she's got to jealously guard her role because she's basically surplus to requirement, and it's pretty obvious that the company on the brink of bankruptcy).

i remember a scene where Shy saw a guy on a stretcher suffering from the disease discussed in the rpg - are we supposed to think that that guy fell in the river of goo they find at the end?

I felt Duncan was slightly less believable than Dorian, but I still got her point of view and loved hating her. 10/10 for the book from me.

I do not like Colony War in the slightest. It's the worse Alien book in recent memory for me (Hicks) but it's kind of needed for overarching plot. I've really enjoyed the next book though, Inferno's Fall. You might be able to get away with skipping to it.

Great stuff, I really enjoyed both books. I listened to the audiobook versions as I drive often enough to make it worth it. Did yall check out the latest prequel audiobook that is supposed to be a prequel to the Aliens: Fireteam video game called Aliens: Infiltrator?

Yeah, I've read Infiltrator. :) We're going to do an episode on it in a few episodes. I need to re-read it actually.
