This has to be one of my fave episodes. Learning about Gabie and Jee’s backgrounds and how they identified with the countries they grew up in was absolutely fascinating. As a Filipino American I couldn’t stop thinking that Jee sounds so much like me and all my Filipino friends that were raised in California and when she said she lived in the Philippines for 24 years I had an “aha! Moment”. Thank you for sharing their stories and giving us loyal viewers a deeper look into their respective backgrounds. I hope we get more of these lovely conversations with Gabie and Jee.

I am Korean and Taiwanese-Filipino and this speaks a lot to me. I definitely identify with both Korean and Filipino cultures because I keep on going back and forth on those countries growing up. I was born in the Philippines and was taught Korean and English before I knew Tagalog so it was a bit difficult for me to adjust when I started school because I did not speak Tagalog that much and was even bullied by some kids because I was one of the two kids there that was mixed (the other was a Japanese girl which became my friend) I remember crying in school when I could not understand Tagalog. But gradually, I adjusted after a long time and I was proud to know both cultures and when the people around me and in the Philippines were getting more and more interested in Korean culture, traditions, entertainment, and media as a kid. I know that I have Taiwanese ancestry on my mom’s side from Taiwan but I am not that familiar with Taiwanese culture aside from the rituals that I saw that my mom’s relatives do.

Ah I feel a bit less alone now, I'm Romanian but I lived in Italy for 18 yrs (I'm 22 eheh) and I was always treated differently (and more than often in quite hurtful ways) even though I could speak the language perfectly and I was just a kid. I still feel quite lonely since I don't have any romanian friends to share my culture with...Since I lived here for so long people often ask me if I feel more italian or more romanian and I have to say, because of all the discrimination I couldn't feel italian even if I wanted to...so I grew to be proud of being Romanian, also because it's a beautiful country even if people around me don't see it. Kind of a long comment, I'm sorry, but I really connect with this topic...

This is so freaking cool. I was in awe the whole time, as I'm EXACTLY like Jee. I'm a Korean who grew up in the Philippines and also went to a Chinese school but was constantly surrounded by American media. So I'm learning four languages at the same time, but the only one I'm fluent in is English, which is neither the language of where I'm originally from nor the language of where I live in. It's odd, but I get by, and it is what it is.

Just watched this video and I've got to say that this was one of my favorite episodes on this channel. Learning how Jee grew up in the Philippines made me reflect on my life too. I am half and half Korean-Filipino and living in the Philippines for 18 years (I'm 18), I relate to what Jee said on the video. Being the least Korean they know because I basically grew up as a Filipino, they sometimes forget that I'm also half Korean but still I wanted to part of the community so I had to strip of most of my Korean "qualities". Because of it, I have forgotten almost all about Korean culture and I regret it the most. Its kinda sad but it is what it is.

At first I really cried a lot because I could not understand the people around me, especially on my first day in university it was extreme like I could not understand the professor. Gladly later on I felt at home, like I never knew what home was... I still miss Bahrain of course but I came to understand my country more and love other cultures like Korea 😊 Shoutout to all TCKs!
