I'm learning Welsh as well, so I'm pleased to see other people studying the language. We can all stick together and endure the questions about why we're bothering to learn a language no one speaks (and everyone who does speak it also speaks English). Stay strong and keep learning! Llongyfarchiadau am eich gwaith!

Welsh like all Celtic languages has some cool ideas behind it. Like Irish it doesn't have a word for have. My brother is more like THE brother is with(gyda) me. No need for indefinite articles such as a or an. The Celtic Languages are geared for sound euphony using a mutation system and the language is so phonetic that after using the IPA(international phonetic alphabet) for it's pronunciation I eventually discarded it because the Welsh orthography was a much better adaptation than the IPA. I love the Welsh language even though it's a challenge and people do speak Welsh, in fact 500,000 Speakers in Wales alone.

Excellent introduction. without reading the subs, i understood pretty much all of what you said. I live in north-east wales, where its predominantly english speaking. I’ve been learning since last July, using Duolingo and a series of Welsh lessons originally from the early 90’s on ikky lee’s dysgu Cymraeg channel. Only now it’s starting to come together for me. I hope to get involved with other welsh speakers near me. What made me want to learn welsh was a few reasons and I’m glad I decided to give it a go. Hope you keep learning, well done

Omg that is so funny, I lived in Wales six years and when anyone asks me if I speak Welsh my response is always 'safle bws' 😂😂😂 Honestly though i totally relate, Wales is my home I think, even though I wasn't born there. I'm planning on moving back in the next few years. I've not started learning Welsh, beyond a few kids songs on KZbin, and I've actually spent the last year throwing myself into learning German, after 7 years of schooling but not particularly getting to a high level. But I've been looking a lot of history lately, and Welsh is basically the ancestor to the brythonic language which was spoken in my area of England too! Which I feel gives me a reason to reach out to Welsh, rather than my imposter syndrome I felt about learning the language when I lived there. Anyway, it's great to see someone on KZbin learning Welsh, there doesn't seem to be that many people doing it! Maybe in a years time I'll give it a proper go?

Tbf, your Welsh intro wasn't bad at all (I'm a fluent Welsh speaker, living in USA.) Don't worry too much about the mutations, you'll still be understood. I think the mutations are very daunting to learners, but seriously, don't worry about them, you'll start to get a feel for when mutations are necessary, and when they're not. I'm curious: how much Duolingo do you do a day to reach the level you've reached? Also, is it only Duolingo you've used to learn so far? Thanks for shining a light on my language, it always warms my heart whenever I learn of someone who is making the effort to learn Welsh. Diolch o galon, a pob lwc efo dy siwrne dysgu Cymraeg!

Diolch! Yeah, I figured it's kinda like learning German with all the die/der/das that in the end you'll still be understood. When I did this video I was probably doing maybe like 15-30 minutes a day? Now I've kinda fallen off the wagon but wanting to take it up again! Yeah, just doing duolingo as it's free. Looked into doing an evening course in London but it was a bit pricey for a language I might not really be using yet so I'm sticking to the app for now. Hoping to be able to get to Wales on a road trip in the next two years and would be nice to be able to order food in the more remote areas in Welsh! :) Thanks for watching!!

It gets a lot of us quite mad when you say that cause the only reason being is the English killed Welsh people for speaking Cymraeg back awhile ago and less than 100 years ago they had been beating kids for speaking welsh. 1/3 of people speak welsh in wales and it’s going up so anyone else reading this don’t say this please cause it gets us very mad.

A language is a manner of thinking and solving problems too a certain way as well as explaining some countries specialities from artisanat to folks wisdom: hence why, in 2100 there will be STILL around 3000 languages and dozens of international ones (as underlined scientifically in 2020). I speak Mexican Spanish which I prefer to mainland Spanish and learned a lot in 11 years in Southern California in the mid 80's, 90's and 2004-2008). And also English / American, but that's because I spent over 12 years in the US and now 20 years in the UK. English is useful and will continue for its benefits in some first degree languages and affires, but not as before! Now, and I'm not talking politically but diplomatically in many ways, about the fact that Trump was elected in the United States for four years and millions of Trumpist extremists are still here as well as Brexit (although I understand why Britain has done it) with its diplomatic confinement, English will henceforth be replaced, in some transactions of international trade and educational / cultural diplomatic cooperation by Spanish, Russian, Hindi, French, Portuguese , Russian, Polish and more. ALSO Welsh is experiencing incredible growth in Wales and internationally: 884,300 (29.2% of the population of Wales, 2021 and globally it has seen, as we know now, a 44% increase from 2020, with Welsh beating Hindi, Japanese, French and Turkish.
