How synchronistic that I found this video this week! I live down in Naalehu and have been feeling the nudge to leave - everything flowed for the first three years, but now everything seems to be crumbling haha. I think I need to connect back to my home in Ohio for awhile, but who knows what will happen after! Thanks for the video, it's very well done

I enjoyed your video. I used to live in Boise but relocated to Hawaii. Although I only stayed for a year, I find myself missing it constantly. I completely relate to the concept of island fever. The high cost of living is a significant challenge, especially when working in the tourism industry. Saving money is nearly impossible with Hawaii's expensive lifestyle. Since leaving Hawaii, I've purchased a couple of houses. I've noticed that everything on the mainland tends to be more profitable compared to Hawaii. I hope to move back one day but not have to work as hard.

I lived in Hawaii for 20 yrs. I would have to say I have never seen so much hatred or violence towards newcomers anywhere else in the world. Locals hate all outsiders. So the weather is incredible and the islands are beautiful. The Locals actually dump trash all over to discourage people from moving there. It's really hard to find "Hawaiian friends" so you have to associate with other "outsiders". I finally left because of so much hatred and violence aimed at myself and other "haole" people. I'm now living in a location on the mainland with warm friendly neighbors and cheaper everything ❤❤❤

Best video yet. It was interesting to see the TMT protest footage and bring up the issue of locals disliking outsiders. For me, farming and putting hands on soil for years was the way I became Kama’aina. Even still, 20 years later and I still ask if the islands will forever be my home. It’s really great if we can travel, but it’s often hard to make enough money to have that freedom.

I feel you! I started out here on a farm. I think that is the proper way to experience the life on Big Island. Travel is hard.. I’m headed to Utah for a trip tomorrow but I’ll need at least 5k to leave for vacation.

Great video. I had a lot of similar experiences and considerations that led me to decide to move abroad back into the world. Stay or go, its all in the flow of the islands. Listen to that intuition.

Amazing job! Love the footage, and definitely can understand after visiting that tension. I didn’t feel right staying for longer than just a vacation. For someone who shoots photography, but is on the main land I can get the limited access. But you can go visit and always come home to your paradise. So that’s a blessing in itself. Hopefully you come out to California with Miles one of these days and we can show you Northern California and all it’s possibilities. 🫶🏻

Lol. At least for me it seems I can never edit enough. I always find something to fix. You and your videos are inspiring. I just started video editing and taking video and photos about a year and a half ago as someday I hope to quit landscaping as my body slowly fails from physical hard work. I love creating and I think that’s why I like photography and video. Maybe someday when I’m the big island, I’ll look you up and maybe we can talk story. PS. I didn’t really want to leave the big island I lived there for almost 10 yrs. I wish I never left. Knowing what I know now. Take good care.

Jon - I fall into the Category of career is now over and want to return to Paradise for Autumn/Winter Chapers. I spent nine glorious months on the Island of Kauai mid 1990's. Sadly, I can not see any way into that market. Million dollar closet-sized homes is all that is left and no new building permits to ease low supply/high demand issue. Further, I'm aware of the Local Island Vibe. I'm also Hapa. HOWEVER - I know there's nothing I can do to help the cultural issue and don't want to hear about it either if/whenever I can ever get into that market. The Mainland has it's own issues (mostly race-based) and I'm sick of everything always in all ways dancing around an issue that never gains any traction, but is a hole in the ocean that everyone treats like the wailing wall. Do something about it, but not my issue and don't think that you have license to shove it down my throat just because I'm lucky enough to find a way in and live there. FWIW - This is my honest take from someone who busted their backside in a career and has no regrets about finding some place somewhere on the planet not to have to listen to an issue that never gets off the launch pad.
