I think that's the summary of it, but my theory is that he was too caught up with work and was late to his wife's delivery, where she and the baby died during childbirth. There's no concrete answer, but what we can be pretty certain about is this: The character you play as suffered a tragedy regarding his family and decides to move to start anew. Unfortunately, he doesn't really want to move because of the memories about his family that are tied to the house, hence why new rooms keep appearing. His wife (who is presumably dead) also seems to not want him to leave. Ultimately he just ends up coming back home. What the tragedy that occured is exactly is not clear. Some people say the wife and kid died during childbirth, but that doesn't really explain the flashback he had about his baby at 1:08:50 nor the pictures of his family on the walls. Someone else theorized that the wife and kid(s) died in a car crash, which would be what the hospital scene is trying to tell us in that case, however there's nothing in the game that hints towards it being specifically a car crash.
