I’ve seen Gary around in school over the past few years (especially in UTown) Just thought he was a student with cool tattoos, and sometimes I would see him studying and cheer him on silently. Never thought that I would be seeing him here. Congratulations on graduating!! You’re an inspiration, truly. :)

I feel that nowadays tattoos are getting more socially acceptable and more people see it as a form of art now rather than associating it with gangs or any other bad notions. I would love to see more content like this! I’m also a ITE graduate and went on to complete my private degree. Looking forward to see Gary’s great contribution to the society and to those who are struggling, don’t give up!

I admire Gary's grit, perseverance and resilience as he transformed himself from being a social reject as a delinquent to being academically inclined with an honours degree from NUS in social work. Despite being physically unacceptable with all his body tattoos, he managed to stand tall in the society as a living testimony to all of us to embrace rehabilitations and hope for those who face challenges and vissitudes of life. Social support and advocates for 2nd chance are keys to helping people in the society like Gary. This is truly an inspiration video to all of us and those who are in similar situation like Gary. God bless you Gary, my best wishes and regards.

Amazing video. Very authentic and real. I agree with him that society is materialistic and it is sad to see how majority of the society rejects individuals when they are at their lowest points. Thankfully there are people who are willing to lend a helping hands to others when they are at their lowest point and believe in them. May there be more people to see the food in others and continue to see the potential in people especially when they are at their lowest. Such belief and support is so important and can be life changing. Thanks CNA insider for producing such meaningful videos.

I love this so much and you’re so amazing Gary. For standing tall and pushing through what seems impossible. I myself come from a low income family where my dad had a gambling addiction. I’m also a single child and it’s really hard sometimes to feel a lot of the pressure in my own hands. My mom does not a high education either, only studied till secondary school. But I told myself I can do it, if what it takes is harder work and longer journey, I have to do it for myself. And in turn, I hope to be a beacon of hope to those that has their own hardships and feeling hopeless. The trick is to ignore naysayers and focus on the kind of life I want to build for myself. I’m glad to learn a lot throughout the years and just remember to stay genuine. Some things you just can’t understand unless you been through it.

The education system is designed so that it provides anyone from education level an opportunity to rise through education levels. But truth is, not everyone has that same tenacity to study all the way till the top.
@csy8972 жыл бұрын
@@kelvinickable tbh don't need to. ITE is a very good start to skill-based fields that don't require you to have a degree. In the new economy now, having skills is often times more valuable than an academic degree. I mean, degree you can always get your company to pay for you in future. Seeing the situation in China now, honestly speaking ITE was a very good investment for our country's future. And personally, what I'm doing now pays way more than what my degree was good for. The cert that taught me the skills to get me into my job now is probably worth less than an ITE cert.

The moment I saw the thumbnail I recognised him, I’ll always remember him and his story. I came across his book, “I Am Not a Label, I Am Gary”, years ago and his story really moved me, especially because I’ve been struggling a lot with everything so his story struck a chord with me and inspired me, and has stuck with me ever since. I ended up buying his book as I wanted to support him, and you can support him that way too if you like. I appreciate how candid and genuine he his, and I’m equally moved, if not more, than when I first read about his story a few years back. It touches me how determined and hardworking he is while overcoming so many obstacles, and the fact that he wishes for youths to do even better than him in future. While on this topic, I really hope to see more of us playing our part to achieve a much more understanding, accepting and embracing society in the near future, so that people like Gary will be able to be who they really want to be, with much less resistance and obstruction inflicted upon them by society. It's time we see people for who they really are. A huge thank you to Gary for all the work he's doing for our youths and the inspiration he provides, and to all of the people who believed in him and helped him in his journey. All the very best to Gary and everyone who’s on a similar path, including everyone who’s currently struggling. Be clear of who you are and what you’re doing and you’ll never be a label (referring to not allowing anyone’s label of us to define us; whether others choose to label us or not is out of our control, and frankly doesn’t matter)

I admired u that u had this opportunity to do this still for u today…. Many folks aren’t as lucky as u…. It doesn’t matter if u have tattoos. How I hope time can be reset…..

okies listen up. My friends and I are Muslim, we are forbidden from getting tattoos (some sects anyway), but lemme tell ya, if we pass by someone with tattoos - good ones (like yours la) we would look (not stare, since that too is not allowed, but we would look) cause we really find them really pretty. like, we wouldn't be like "the unbeliever has tats look at that" no we would be like "mashallah, those really suit him/ her really brings out their feature/ possible character" of course, I am not referring to those that seem to have tattoos on just to intimidate (usually those are in huge groups with gold chains and rude behavior, which is scary to foreign girls but anyway...) not all stares are bad, some of us are just admiring the art. that's all.

@JackThePro2 жыл бұрын
Most youths from such backgrounds usually come from dysfunctional families. While I agree it also depends on the youth's action, opportunities are also limited due to social stigma. It is also difficult for them to come out of their bubble due to the lack of positive influences in their lives.
@sk8tergal9952 жыл бұрын
sorry to say but this is just undermining the fact that he actually took time and effort to get to where he is today. If he didn’t want to work hard to create a better life for himself, he would have been on a less fruitful path even with the support he has been given. Everyone makes their own decision ultimately, and this was his to turn over a new leaf to have a better future for himself.
@JackThePro2 жыл бұрын
It's not my intention to undermine his hard work. I did say that I admire his tenacity to turn things around. My issue is the role of the media putting him in the pedestal, making the general public assume that if youths like him work hard, they can be like him as well. When in fact, working hard may just not be enough to succeed.

And yet me with a IB diploma cert cannot even apply to any of the courses that nus has to offer (even the ones with the lowest entry requirements). @valenciasrei81057 ай бұрын
Skill schools are building their students to work immediately after the course ends, and unfortunately most jobs in certain industries would reject employees with visible tattoos/bright coloured hairs/not presentable appearance, just like how certains jobs doesn't allow employees to have accessories when working(earrings/necklace/bracelet etc.). A few tattoos peaking out is fine with most, but his is visible and on large range. Sad about that, but understandable from both sides.
