I think he MEANT that he couldn’t play “The Straight Man” (i.e the person in comedies meant to point out the ridiculousness of situations..) Think Burton Guster A.K.A “Magic Head” from the t.v show Psych.. Although he did often partake in Sean’s crazy schemes, a lot of the time he reacted in a very believable way simply by pointing out WHY Sean’s ideas were absolutely insane (whether they worked or not). A lot of times the straight man is required to keep a straight face in the midst of absolutely ridiculous situations as a representative of real world logic and as a stand in for the audience itself. Which is weird because George Sr. is definitely NOT a “straight man” character irl.. But he’s usually pretty serious about his foolishness so I suppose that’s probably why Tobias views him as the straight man of the family (which, ironically enough, would ACTUALLY be either Michael or George Michael)

There are photos from the original shooting where Tobias' son was played by the lead pirate guy from Captain Phillips, but they changed course during filming for whatever reason and went with Kyle Mooney instead.
