Tribute to 10cc

Tribute to 10cc

5 жыл бұрын

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of smash hit I'm Not in Love, the original members of 10cc - Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme - reunite to tell their story. The documentary shares the secrets to some of their most successful records, from the writing and the recording to the tours and the tensions. With contributions from an impressive array of music industry legends including 10cc's band manager Harvey Lisberg, lyricist Sir Tim Rice, broadcaster Paul Gambaccini, legendary producer Trevor Horn, Stewart Copeland (the Police) Graham Nash (the Hollies) and Dan Gillespie Sells (the Feeling) not only does this film highlight the diversity of these four brilliant musicians' songwriting talent, but it also delves into the influence they had as well as the politics beneath their acrimonious split in 1976, at the height of their fame.

I still think that How Dare You is one of the best, most complete albums from start to finish that I ever heard. It was just brilliant. And, I'm Not In Love is my first musical memory. I have still never heard anything as good. 10cc is one of the very best bands in rock history.

Seen 10cc many times at Glasgow Apollo, before and after the split. Three times in one week, would have been 4 if Lol Creme hadn't lost his voice! Musically they were brilliant, their lyrics were very clever and funny. I often wonder what gems we would have got had they stayed together a little longer. Thanks for the memories guys it's been a blast 👍👍

... WBD, I'm feeling it, like a totally wonderous wow out all of a half century ago and half a world away down under here in OZ. You're 1 very fortunately lucky enough to have been in the right place at the right time to have witnessed truely great musical history. Back in the early 80's, i was whimsyically inspired enough by Godley Creams' Consequences to name my band 17, which in itself was obscure enough and mysterious enough to get us onto the circuit for a couple of years, backing many of the up and comings and the already weres, which is as close as we could get to the fire. We was nothing, but thought that we was the greatest ...

... Aend, 10cc foreran the likes of ELO and many others. The patent maybe out, But because that little thingy can single handedly emulate an orchestra and wot-not, and though It's as analogue as can be, I recon that Lol&Kev could very easily relaunch the Gizmatron today and make an abba-$olute killing with IT for sure, yeah-yeah ...

I grew up around three miles from Strawberry Studios and as my musical "awakening" happened when I was 15 in 1972 10cc and SRS played a big part of my life at that time. But the studio may never have existed. In June 1967 a DC4/Argonaut airliner belonging to British Midland Airways crashed less than 200 yards away killing 72 people, with 12 survivors. 200 yards to the right was Stockport Police Station and directly opposite was an Edwardian pub. The aircraft was reported to have clipped one of the chimneys of that building.

I remember their music back in the "70's as a kid. Great memorable songs on the radio..as many were at that time. So 10cc was one of those bands.. , there was a lot of great music on the airwave, so much different styles and variety. The thing about the "I'm not in love"..hit that struck me was the sound. We had an old stereo radio and the vocals on that song made it as if the song came out of every corner of the room! Also the name 10cc got stuck in my head. Little did I know they were of that importance in music history..all that became more aparent later! This video surely underlines their influence!!

I never knew that Graham Gouldman wrote my two favorite songs by the Yardbirds! Wow, what a Talented Musician! And Song Writer. I agree he should be recognized for his Top Songs that He Wrote! I don't think he's been given enough Credit for his talent and worth to the Whole of Roots Rock and Roll as far as the British Invasion goes. The Mind Benders were also amazing! Groovy kind if Love! Wow! That's one of the Best Love Songs Ever Written and Preformed Both Live and Studio Versions! I never knew there was so much talent in 10 cc. I'm not in Love is really what put 10 cc into Super Stardum as far as things go, but my favorite 10 cc song is Black Mail because of the Beat, singing and flow of the song! Also, completely Original!

This AMAZZING band were just so inventive with music, harmony, lyrics.....so influential and seriously, look upp songs written by Gouldman before they were even formed. They were so good they had the confidence to be inventive, imaginative...no fear. Nobody told them what to do. Just one of the best ever and in the same breath as the Beatles. And yet, lost to time. Eh? You only kn ow 'Dreadlock Holiday' and Oh Donna?....HOW DARE YOU! I wrote this ages ago on a comment to the song "Don't Hang up" So weird to hear them say the same here. BTW....Give your life a huge present and listen too Don't Hang Up ....just beyond pop etc.

There’s a bit of contradiction here. I live in Dorking Surrey. The legend was that the Strawberry Studios were in a former old cinema in Dorking. 10cc’s records were made here. In fact one of their albums was called Deceptive Bends. This was named after the famous dangerous bends at Meiklham near Dorking. It was here too that Eric Stewart had his infamous road accident when he was nearly killed. Can anyone clarify. Wherever, they were a great band and I’m not in Love still a great song. 🙋‍♂️🇬🇧👏👏

Kathy 's last line, "Big boys don't cry." is wrong, plus it doesn't fit the song's actual title, "I'm Not in Love" by 10cc. In addition to that, repeating that prejudiced line, "Big boys don't cry" to hurt all the men and boys all over town just to spread gossip and rumors everywhere is very foolish, plus it made that song a mess that no one in the world could tidy up by erasing her middle part that was a bad mistake. 33:47

This is a great song that's still being listened to nearly 50 years later . . . meanwhile his self-indulgent 'avant garde' album "Consequences" is long forgotten, and rightly so --- it's crap, and "The Things We Do For Love" isn't.

Consequences is not forgotten at all. Bizarre thing to say. They made some other great albums too, not to mention their work producing videos for other prominent artists. Cleaned up? not really, but maybe another try at this valuable documentary and it'll get there. First off, fix the aspect - oval shaped kick drums aren't in vogue ;-). Secondly, up the rez to at least 1080p. You can do it! Or, send me the footage

I think “life is a minestrone” Is code for life sucks because no one that I know raves about minestrone soup. When it came down to writing that song, they must’ve had a list of soup choices. Was gazpacho and mulligans stew the other choices on the list of unappealing soups?

Its like the original 10cc 4 suffered more than most from the way the music industry is a disruptive business that attempts to reconfigure itself every 5 years. This would suit godley & creme once it was clear that concept albums were going out. In truth Roland had already killed Gizmo before it was even on sale, but these things were not that obvious at the time & the need to fufill ambition is strong. Gizmo was a brilliant but massive distraction with a lot of pressure on it. Then there had been the King thing earlier, and all on top of the way a bond between the two pairs of musicians was only semi strong from the outset. 10cc were going to hit a musical crossroads in any case as things changed with the decade. In that way Genesis were one of the bands that were well ahead of such shifting sands, & in reality it was godley & creme that were the better equipped for change. But with a concept album ( consequences of which is a gem ) but was also in contradiction to them. They had the degree of freedom to progress, but were working in a genre that no longer was. Thus add a gadget to this & it just seems to have opened up what was always an existing seam from the start. Once G&C had found the way forward it was the type of progress that worked. By then the 80's had moved the goal posts so that latter 10cc were not comfortable in their own skin. If Lol & Kevin had one major advantage it would be that they were not bound tight to the 70's sound & felt comfortable just about anywhere the experimental stream of consciousness zoning in took them. Eric & Graham seemed much more restricted therefore confused by the 80's & the zone seemed to lead them back there. That could have resulted in more great songs, but the 80's would not let bands do the 70's anymore as everyone found out. The problem is once a decade is gone its gone & with 10cc being a pop based rock band there is a lot of rigidity concerning what sells set by the fashions. Really 10cc had a 1972 - 1978 degree of freedom if the 4 were going to stay together & make albums like sheet music et al. That G&C were already getting ratty with HDY was probably ill founded as they are doing it for the sake of two projects which they could not see had no future at the time. However sadly for 10cc there was also something right about being steps ahead of change so G&C were right in tha respect. The aforementioned ability by G&C to feel just as much in the zone for any sound seems to be key there. Experimentation ( the phenomenon of ) loses its definition if anything places a bias on it. Eric & Graham might have unintentionally done this by bing less able to zone into the 80's change ( which had started happening in the mid 70's quite counter intuitively ). But still G&C might have disrupted 10cc too early about it. And it always felt like 10cc were only ever burdened with management that absolutely stank. Otherwise 10cc might well have worked it out together & found a better way. IF they could have it would have made zero difference the way G&C were perceiving a separate urge to move forward & this might have provided time for eric & graham to catch up and get into another zone on things. To compose music that is different from, but no better than before yes. That was what was on offer from 75 - on along with a kind of sociological pressure to just give it up and pack it in because the future was new wave etc. Though a lot of bands held their nerve & made the best 70's records ever whilst having to endure ad hominem militant level criticism. Unfortunately its as though 10cc in particular found it hard to concentrate & agree on what makes the right stream of consciousness by that stage. More or less a metaphysical disagreement where some were now zoning Y sounds whilst others were still coming up with X that could have been less divisive, if it had taken place in 1979.

That talentless lady Kathy Redfern was nuts repeating no such spoken line, "Big boys don't cry" to spoil the middle of 10cc's "I'm Not in Love" just to make that heartfelt ballad go off-subject! Get her off! 😡😠 33:45 - 33:55

I'll tell you what. I couldn't stand Kathy Redfern's annoying voice repeating "big boys don't cry" to spoil that heartfelt ballad "I'm Not in Love" by 10cc in midsong just to leave it half-unfinished, because it drives me crazy, 😡so I made the whole audience boo her out. That's why I know the worst part in the middle that she was doing, which was a bad mistake, 😞is not my favorite. My fact is her last 4 spoken words that were repeated too often, "Big boys don't cry" do not match the song's actual title. The disappointment was it left the original recording of that song too long, too lengthy and too confusing with no clearer message or no clarity, plus it left the original recording of that song untidy with nobody deleting her messy, repetitive interlude that sounded like a broken record that got a big boring to cause that song a delay for no reason. 😢😞Instead I had to replace that annoying, repeated irrelevant big-boys-don't-cry rubbish that didn't have what it took with relevant clips of Ann Romano acting like she's not in love with her hubby anymore when she slapped her son, Alex in the face from "One Day At a Time", a clip of Lucy asking Schroeder if he wanted to suffer the tortures of the memory of a lost love from "Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown" and another clip of Ann Romano acting like she's not in love with her husband anymore due to age-related health problems or cancer when she slapped her daughter, Julie in the face again from the family sitcom, "One Day At a Time". Those are the relevant clips that fit the song that Eric Stewart was singing. 33:46 - 35:36
