It isn't "dumb luck" that the rail part fits perfectly with the captured cross. The rail part is 1.425 studs wide, which is roughly equivalent to the square root of 2 - which as you know is required to close the hypotenuse of the right angled triangle created in the captured cross.

In the old Lego technic set 8479, this part was used in a practical way: a 9V Power Motor has notches on its sides onto which it can be held by these rails. In the set, the rails are part of two slots for different functions. Its only motor can thus be easily switched around between them.
@RohanBeckett2 ай бұрын
I still use the old 9V motors from time to time in moc's... they are quieter and more compact than modern motors... the rails are a *great* way to let you modularise the motor, allowing it to be swapped out easily
@bobfitzpatrick60612 ай бұрын
Came to say this.I only ever used them to hold motors
@paqshet46482 ай бұрын
The rail part is (according to bricklink) protruding 0.34 mm which is 2.125 LEGO units (1.6 mm). So the gap between two of the plates is 0.75 LEGO units. With the added offset of half a stud, i.e. 2.5 LEGO units, the gap becomes 3.25 units wide, hence why you get the extra 0.25 units (0.4 mm) of wiggle room when trying to fit one and a half plate (3 units). As @dynamiCBricks mentioned, the piece initially only came in technic sets where a special motor piece (part 71427c01) was either included or intended to be added easily by sliding it into the build along the rail pieces. The piece and the motor were possibly specifically designed to fit together. I would assume they have some other reason for this deviation in dimension, but they may also have just stuck with this design since it was useful in other applications and didn't need or deserve a more conforming redesign.

As a rail, these parts often go in pair with sliding doors (like part 4511) which can't connect to any other parts. Also with 2653 1x4 Brick with channel, as used in sets like 7411, or even this year in the mouth mecanism of the Zelda Deku Tree, Ocarina of Time version. It's used in all kinds of non-door sliding applications like in set 1382 (scary laboratory) build step 3 as a slide shelf for the tools. In set 7991 for example it has been used as a "lip" to rest the roof of the truck on (not sure if that counts as play feature). Part "4511 - Door Sliding" has been mentioned here already. The rail part fits into the grooves of 2412 (tile grill) so one might be able to pull some fancy stud reversal magic here. Some wheel like parts (e.g. 2496 Skateboard/trolley wheel) fit into the groove so it can be used as a guide rail for those (imagine some bridge/overhead crane for example).

Yes, the first usage was 8479 - it was a cost saving measure, because you got only one motor, which had to be swiched to different locations. This made the whole idea of programming the truck with the barcode scanner completely useless, since you had switch the motor inside the program to switch functions. I was really disappointed as a kid, when i realized that. Also the Barcode Scanner had these counter-rails - because you had to remove it foor scanning. But in Retrospective, it was the first step of Mindstorms, so it's fantastic and disappointing at the same time :D.

If you want to attach a flag (like piece 2335) to a body, you could use piece 2540, but if you place the latter face up, the upper side of the flag would be aligned with the top of the plate (not the studs), because the bar of 2540 is not centered vertically on the plate. If you need the flag to be centered vertically with the holding plate, then the door rail comes in handy. But that could be deemed an illegal build, since you do have to force a bit to clip the door rail into the flag clips.

You seem oblivious to the existence of door elements 4511 and the later-released 2874, which these door rail plates were originally designed to work with. They were specifically designed as sliding doors, with no studs or door frames to attach them to. The only way to use them properly is through these door rail plates. These doors were typically used in freight trains and warehouses and the like. They were made to allow for a realistic left-to-right sliding door motion. Think of it as a horizontal version of the garage door elements. The later 1x2 piece I believe was introduced to accomodate a new 9V Technic motor with grooves that fit over it, which was introduced in the late nineties. That being said, it also allows you to expand the 1x8 configuration as well, to make the rails for the sliding doors a bit longer if you want to. There's also a 2-stud-wide variant of the 1x8 one to accomodate 1-stud thick, brick-built doors to operate in a similar fashion. This is great if you don't want to buy these somewhat rare and retired door elements. You can just build your own with your own pieces this way. I frequently use these door rail elements as windowsills, gutters or just as ornamental lines to make my LEGO houses pop a bit more and to avoid flat surfaces. You can place them on regular plates and bricks to make something that sticks out a bit more or make that which sits between them look a bit more recessed. Mounting them sideways using the bricks with studs on the side allows you to use both the texture of the rail and the studs on an outside surface. You can do the same with the bottom of these pieces by inserting the studs into the back of headlight bricks. They have been extremely useful in any architectural build I have ever done. They also work wonders in mechanical looking things like the inside of factories and spaceships.

When you take the 1x8 version of the plate and place a regular 1x8 plate next to it (with the rail being on between) the distance between a stud of the normal plate and the parallel stud of the modified plate is equal to...... the diagonal distance of the studs from a 2x2 plate.
@bricksculpt2 ай бұрын
Hmmm I'm trying to work this one out but you lost me at the distance diagonally.

@@bricksculpt simply take a 2x2 plate and turn it by 45 degrees. Then connect the studs on the corners to my previously described assembly.

It fits into part 32307. IDK if this is intentional, or how useful it is, but I discovered it when I was a child and never used it.

I like the sliding door for those doors, I have some. Also had a couple hundred of this piece two. Until I decided to do a cheesy, homemade second Artemis Rocket base. That set has 98 in the base, in a SNOT wall way for the vertical detail on the two sides. I have two mostly similar bases. However only one compete tower because that was tedious. My coolest use for the piece is shelf supports. Can be done almost any size. But I made a 1980's retro HiFi rack. Turntable with record and dome on top, equalizer, tape deck, (what's it called?) the control center where you change input and volume and power is at. Mind's blank. It's large for a Minifigure being six studs wide seven bricks tall. But the 4x4 shelves slide in and out. I was thinking about cutting a yo-yo string into cords. Bright yellow is my favorite yo-yo string color, got dozens and I have no problem mixing my toys. I can do all 10 basic yoyo tricks too plus a few more.

Look at set 41704 book 3 steps 30-31 for a nice example. Can also be used for the bottom, but the top is used for stud alignment. This is also in same set, book 4 steps 33-34. Also I just realised that this is not the exact same piece, however it has the same name just a different size for a different use. It is actually 30586 ‘plate modified 2x8 with door rail’. (As opposed to 1x8, or in the case of this video, 1x2)

It was mostly on older Train wagon sets like 4563 for the sliding wagon doors.

these were the same connections for old bumper pieces IIRC, I think it was for space sets in that regard, (and like, only one ONE set too, the mars base again, could be wrong. it's been like 15 years since I've seen that set myself)
