I'm in the same boat. Have my BA for competitive play and am slowly working on CSM for a more thematic fun play style with friends that don't enjoy getting rolled by my angry space vampires. That and Kill Team are starting to take priority, but this new Codex has me pausing those to get my list back up to snuff.

As a player that started 40k with 10th edition and that stared a lamenters army some months ago, i'm really excited by this set. It contains everything that i want in terms of units and all that i need in terms of customisation (i free hand everything on my army, so i wouldn't have used the transfer sheet if it had Lamenters markings anyway). I ordered 2 of this box. But I can really understand why a veteran who already have everything might be disappointed by this "refresh" which admittedly takes out a fair amount of "blood angels-ness" to the blood angels. (I'll find some wings to go with the new sanguinary guard, and some better death mask heads too). The only bad note I have with this refresh is the loss of the BA dreadnoughts. I hate the looks of primaris dreadnoughts, the brutalis is no exception (plus it's really a black templars dreadnought rather than a blood angels one). I have a "old" firstborn furioso dreadnought that I finished painted like death company ~1 week before the reveal of this army set, and I guess I'll just rebase him and play him as a brutalis now.

I was in the process of converting my Space Marines into Blood Angels, after reading three of their books. However the new refresh is not for me and I found it really underwhelming and disappointing, especially after how good the Black Templar and Dark Angels refreshes were. I know a lot of people love it but I totally agree and get where you’re coming from dude! I’ve now started creating my own homebrew chapter, who are successors of the Space Wolves to make a Viking looking army and utilise what will hopefully be a better refresh later in the edition.

I have been in the hobby for over 30 years. In my opinion, the only good thing to come out of the reboot is that marines are being scaled to represent their 'real' size in comparison to humans. For those that have only recently joined the hobby, once apon a time space marines were almost the same size as some imperial guard. I think it would have been a better idea to introduce some new characters or even a new unit or two for the Blood Angels. Astoraph (forgive the spelling) is a relatively new character in comparison to the other characters, introducing a new character may have helped us get a little excited.

I'm a newer player who got into it during the pandemic I really do like how all the firstborn marines looked more "rouge", like you could tell their armor was more patched together from different marks The newer stuff is fine but looks way too clean and a bit to generic even for 40K Phobos and Gravis look amazing but the rest just come off as boring

I must confess I do miss the old Marks of armour. I loved corvus armour and maximus the most. I too liked the mixing and matching armour look. It was nice to see a couple of the older helmets on the ​new veteran squad. Lets hope there's more to come in the future.@captainkarnage9874

It feels kind of like the old kits got spilt into two, where you have to get the regular models and the upgrade sprue in order to get something slightly less unique than the old kits. It costs more to get something almost as special

Looks like GW forgot how to Angels Encarmine. Their Death Company are colored whitish/alabaster, not black. So those Transfers wont work very well.

They didn’t give anything for the Dark Angel successors’ Deathwing and Ravenwing companies, just their chapter icons. The broken sword and winged sword are exclusive to the Dark Angels, not their successors. Why would they do anything different for Blood Angels?

As an Angels Sanguine collector, the transfer sheet is genuinely the only part of this release that has me excited. Even as a Death Company transfer sheet I feel it fails, as it doesn't have the red crosses for shoulder pads, which I would've thought are the most important things for Death Company, given that Blood Angels symbol shoulder pads come in the upgrade sprue.

I feel they really screwed up with the gaurd i dont care for the nips but come on the wings were one off the key features, i do think the spears are cool but i wished they kept the Axes

I agree with you. Its been very predictable. The thing that bugs me is BA are meant to be artisans within the lore and all of their artwork produced by GW, they're armour is ornate. But some of models are just bland.

I agree 40k is getting a bit predictable. To the point I'm gonna predict the Space Wolves. New Njal New Ulrik (in mk10) New Wulfen (unit of 3) New Wolf Guard (Mk10 unit of 3) Upgrade Kit with components for Mk10, Phobos, Terminator/Wolf Guard and vehicles etc. MK10 Thunderwolf Cavalry (maybe, with option for character. Could be a unit of 2 like Stormdrake for Stormcast.) On the box itself, I'm a big Death Company fan and this box will fill out my army nicely. All I'm missing is some heavy weapon dudes. I luckily own a metal Lemartes but am really pleased with his new plastic update, and finally Astorath (and my painting skills) are at a level/size of detail I can work with.

The only 2 models out of the refresh I’m remotely interested in are Lemartes because he’s a basic looking jump chaplain. The other is the apothecary. Simply because he has robes. All dark angels characters need robes

The new sculpts are great. I get it, people have fond memories of the previous appearances. But fixed poses allow for more dynamic poses, and primaris in generally look more realistic rather than chunky firstborn where anatomy doesn't match up. The wings, I prefer the less clunky ones, but when looking at them from ground level, the new ones are less obvious. Either way, while I prefer the new models, I'm sorry to all those who preferred the old models, hope you were able to stock up. If not, hopefully you can find 3d printed parts to stick on.

the loss of the Sanguinary Guard Wings is a crime i will not forgive them ever. Assault Terminator like the old Blood Angels Terminator missing? Again a crime. No new Corbulo? Just disappointing. Just Upgrade sprue and even missing Death Company shoulders? Why? No special Dreads? WTF?! Seth was right "just Red Ultramarines" and my first army in 1997 was Ultramarines! Hell did they use up all inspiration for Black Templars some years back? Only model I did not like was the Emperors Champion back then. Blood Angels release is just uninspired and lazy. And were is Gabriel Seth!? Flesh Tearers never had much some Pads and Seth, they given us Decals for them but ripped Seth away! Savages! I guess that's how the Black Rage feels

Try a golden undercoat und a red contrast paint on top. Works perfect!

Metallic colors are super easy to make. Just base coat with any silver or gold metallic and contrast over that.

Tamiya also has a very solid metallic red, though it might be a lacquer (I didn’t notice a difference brushing it on compared to Citadel/Vallejo)

Contrast over metallic is hard to get right. It's so easy for it to come out splotchy. Also it's quite matte. Tamiya clear is good, but requires an airbrish and isn't as shiny as the metallic on the book.

The upgrade sprue having 5 shoulder pads for intercessors and phobos is weird considering they come in boxes of 10.

I am very disappointed with the way they decided to make the Death Company. There are some things I wish this upgrade sprue contained: An muscle armor chest for the Jump Pack Intercessors or the Jump Pack Captain. The Jump Pack Captain not having a muscle armor chest is a major fault. The other thing is that they should have included an extra Power Fist for the kit since the Jump Pack Intercessors can take two Power Fists, but the kit only includes one. The other parts that are VERY disappointing is that the upgrade sprue should have some parts that actually make the Death Company Dreadnought actually look the part. An alternate sarcophagus cover that looks like the skull head would be great. A huge miss overall. That said...this isn't the end of the world. I am going to need to print out a bunch of upgrade parts to really make the models look the part more.

I painted blood angels when I was in my teens and loved them,I stopped painting Warhammer after a year or so now 30 years later I'm painting Warhammer again and I can say after a yr and a half of painting them again I've not yet gone on a nostalgia trip and bought blood angels. I painted some nids and regretted it 😂 but they were the millennium edition of termagants and the mould lines were endless, I'm painting kreig for the first time and have been enjoying it

Thank you for telling us what you really think about the new box. I was thinking the same from what I've seen. I'm going to miss all the options and different choices of the same part you can use in a box of DC Marines. I think I'll go to 3rd party stuff to make my models stand out. I do have a 3D printer that needs to be worked! I Love the painting reviews also!

I think the box is good for what is. The value in it is the codex, datasheets, upgrade sprues and 10 Jump Marines and characters, the rest is just extra fluff. My biggest issue I've noticed is that if you miss this box and buy the upgrade sprue and jump marines separate, you're going to need to source an extra powerfist if you want them optimal. They also completely messed up the Angels Encarmine transfers, they should have black wings instead of white because their DC ARE white.

No. It means they don’t get special rules or characters. Successor Chapters (aside from Black Templars apparently) are just their progenitor chapters with a different coat of paint now.

It's a broader problem with the 40k setting. Unfortunately, and somewhat ironically, if you build an entire universe around a core theme of stagnation and rot you back yourself into a corner where innovation and creativity are stifled.

10th edition has just been a trainwreck for the hobby side and the BA kit is the latest incident of it. With rules that don't allow for fun, variety or weird things at all and the entire ruleset being so oversimplified and rigid into "spam 'on a 6' abilities" no army has any reason to stand out. The models are all just "remake of old one...but less detailed and with less personality". Subfactions being wiped out completely, iconic beloved characters and units being retired if they aren't "generic enough" to be used in every army of that faction... there's no flex left. Nothing to make a model designer go "I REALLY want to do this..." as their mandate for years has just been "take this unit but make it simpler". How can any artist flourish in those conditions?

It's rough seeing how much you aren't enjoying this new box as someone in the midst of building and painting up a Lamenters army who is ABSOLUTELY FREAKING STOKED about all the Death Company goodness in it. But also I guess that's the benefit of being precisely the target audience of 10th edition who has loved 40K for years but is just now making enough money to get into the hobby proper in time for all these shiny new versions of models lol. Either way, tossed a like to the algorithm gods and I'm excited to copy however you paint Sanguinius' new sons!
