I'm not worried about Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Yet.

After 10 years, getting this much new Dragon Age news felt like a fever dream. I've got some feelings on what we've seen, and what's more to come. Let's see where this goes shall we?

Ngl most of the videos I’ve seen that are hating on dragon age 4 for failing cuz ‘woke’ have not even played the series and are just grifting the culture war and are warping the genuine critique from the actual fans who are valid in their concerns

yeah i ignore any feedback regarding culture war nonsense. I think the only fair criticisms were regarding the comedic tone feeling out of place or the more cartoonish art style. But the preview clip Bioware shared today on twitter gave me hope. That was actually really good.

Most people I have seen critiquing it have played every single game including Origins. It's ok to disagree with the comments, but they are valid.

Its endless spam of Bioware is dead, cartoons graphics, why pop song? Okay, but its a 2 min cgi trailer ? How can anyone write off the game based on two minutes of a bad trailer? At least wait for the gameplay trailer. I don't know what to think because there is literally nothing to go one other than a poor trailer that was probably outsourced and put together by another company.

@@dylanpullock6972 Bioware is on the brink of completely losing their reputation as a great company. This isn't just dragon age. This is the failures of Mass Effect, Anthem and the clearly shoddy development that they have become synonymous with. They need to prove to me and their fans that they can make a great game again. And this trailer did not assuage any concerns. I love Bioware, the company that made Kotor, Mass Effect one and Origins. But they are not the same people anymore. So I am highly skeptical. You mentioned a few concerns, but one of the biggest issues for me is direction. They were making a live service game and then they switched directions. They were making Dreadwolf a game centered around Solas and then changed direction. They completely changed the tone of what Dragon Ages' main motif has been for over a decade. Blood. I'm worried the story will be discombobulated. I'm unconvinced that the gameplay will be any good. I'm sure the game will look nice because it's PS5 and graphics are insane these days, but it's the storytelling and gameplay that hook me and I don't know if they can pull it off. My trepidation is not rare. Many of us feel this way and any attempt to toss us aside and pretend that our concerns are not real or that they can be ignored as a fringe opinion is misguided. That's my point.

I love your enthusiasm! The first time I saw the trailer I was scared but I got used to the style and was happier to meet the companions. I think the comparison with D&D is a positive aspect, I believe that in all games we were in end-of-the-world situations with blight, civil war, kirkwall, mage rebellion, corypheus and in all these situations comedy or sarcasm were used. I think the trailer is a reflection of the companions rather than the world.

There’s definitely a few bad faith arguments in the crowd but I think the majority of the concern is just what happens after 10 years. You build up expectations and idealise the outcome, these reveals always end up popping a few bubbles- if only preemptively (hopefully)

I'm really hoping the "multi-classing" shenanigans the companions seem to be getting up to (Harding, being an Archer Rogue, also having magical abilities) signals the same for Rook, our pc. Maybe the return of advanced classes like the Arcane Warrior, Spirit Warrior, or duel-wielding longswords? As to the tone of the trailer, the last Bioware game to focus its initial marketing on the team being recruited was ME2, universally one of the most beloved games in their portfolio. That doesn't necessarily mean Veilguard will match its quality, but that is something to note.

As a dedicated fan, who knows the world of Thedas religiously, I found the trailer to be tonally odd but slam full of easter eggs and tin-foil hat jumping off points that I couldnt just dismiss it. The most intriguing? The great dragon rearing its ugly head, right in front of the statues of the Evanuris, and surround by what looks like the Black City itself. Man, I cannot wait until Tuesday.

Dragon Age trailers have always been crappy and nothing like the actual gameplay. I still remember the hatred for the reused caves etc. In Dragon Age 2. I will be playing Dragon Age The Veilguard just as I've played Origins, 2 and Inquisition. All I need to do, apart from buying the game, is update my choices in the Keep.

Cool. Be a writing gal, I love good writing in a video game and can look past visuals, if the story is written well. But let's not mince words: the visual style and presentation point to a clear direction in writing. It's gonna be in the same vein as current Star Wars shows -- it's written by the same sort of people, with the same sorts of intentions. It's most likely gonna be more preachy look-down-upon-thee North American alt-left liberal swill. Oh my god it is so nice to see someone else being genuinely excited over the news! Your energy is so great. Completely agree, so many of the things people are griping about are just par for the course with every iteration of Dragon Age. I can understand where the mass anxiety is coming from given the turbulent development we've been distantly hearing about for years, but at the same time- give the game a genuine chance to be good before you decide it's dead in the water. As for me, I'm just so excited to hear about these new characters and fall back in love with Thedas again.

That initial trailer at Xbox event yesturday startled me. It felt tonally off and the art style was off putting. But Bioware shared a preview of actual gameplay today on twitter and i'm sold again. That gameplay felt like Dragon Age. I'm not sure what EA was thinking with that character trailer yesterday.

I just rewatched a Fully Ramblomatic video where Yahtzee described color coding in games. He said “brown” was the color of Xbox 360 games that were full of gritty realism and more modern games use what he called a magenta color palette. Then he pointed out the freeze frames with the bold name cards and listed off a bunch of very successful games that use this format. The reason this trailer was so jarring is because Dragon Age is a game we associate with that “brown” era and this trailer was made for a magenta game. So either the marketing department thought they would pick an art style that was currently popular to generate interest in their game (suggesting they know nothing about the demographic they are attempting to market to) or the game genuinely shifted to resemble Fortnite. I don’t know how the marketing team bypassed the massive success that was Baldur’s Gate 3 when they were looking for art styles to mimic. It’s closer to the same vein that Dragon Age is in than Fortnite.

I mean yeah the trailer is really bad and extremely tone deaf, but it's just a trailer, it doesn't really mean anything. Maybe it's an accurate representation of the game's tone maybe some out of touch big wig in the marketing department thought this would be a great idea to appeal to a younger audience. I'll reserve judgement until we see more, plenty of amazing games have had terrible trailers and plenty of terrible games have had great trailers.

I'm not impressed with this trailer or its looks. Disney or cartoonish are not Dragon Age. Taking Varrics from a blond to black haired with Grey streaks isn't Dragon Age he's always been blond. I'm waiting for a longer than 20 second game play release because the 20 second one is exactly the way it looks in the this trailer.

I was initially very conflicted when I watched the trailer. I think it probably would have been better received if it had been trailer number 2 or something. But after watching it a few times and then seeing the snippet of tomorrow's footage and some info the devs have been revealing on Twitter and in the chat for the gameplay video I'm starting to feel excited. I hope tomorrow makes a lot of these naysayers go back on their comments.
