You’re not alone in your feeling; this is not a movie but a sweet dream for all of us who are in love with Paris and the wonderful 30s when anybody who was someday in culture found a niche over there. I’ve been to Paris a million times and still keep on finding new places and new things to love. Other places, by comparison, seem like bland pointless places.

I've probably watched this movie 80-100 times. What stands out after so many viewings is the meticulous direction- the quick-fire, almost talk-over-each-other dialogue; the diction, where you can clearly hear each word spoken, and the long single take in front of Versailles. None of this is by accident.

Admirable research ! Thank you for putting this video together ! However, it ended on a sad note for me : I can understand the disappointment when you first travel to Paris but, I can tell you, once you get past the fantasy and accept that this city is an actual city where people live, it becomes once again a wonderful universe in itself. The streets, the atmosphere, etc. But I understand that tourism isn't the best way to connect to a place, unfortunately and fortunately ! Places are much more intricate than we think and you don't get to understand and sometimes enjoy them on your first try. Maybe it's a little bit like a romantic love ? I feel like this is one of the interpretation that you can make of Midnight in Paris : if you don't give up your fantasy or the illusion you believe in, then you never get to actually enjoy what's actually wonderful and sensual and real in love or in urbanity. Anyway, sorry for my english, this is from a Frenchie who adores Paris.

So many Fans, I might as well chime in too - I love this movie to death. Not just for the hilarious cameos details.. including JOSEPHINE BAKER dancing the Charleston - you have to love jazz to appreciate those 3 seconds - but also for the biting satire of a certain kind of privileged, superficial, ignorant American embodied by Inez (Gil Penders' pretty blond fiancée), whose presence is the perfect counterpoint to the unaffected warmth and cultural literacy of Gil's "new love" (the girl from the Puces who enjoys Cole Porter and walking in the rain). And the double time-travel back into the Belle Epoque which Marion C. adores, and the line about "novacaine" are priceless. For a literate Anglophone (American or European), the movie is simply a masterpiece ❤

Hahaha... Your last line just broke me out of the mood I am in right now. I am on my way back home after a week long trip in Paris. An hour ago, when my wife asked what was the best thing about the trip, I actually couldn't think of anything in particular. I told her that the whole trip was rather mediocre. I've had better vacations. There's was nothing too bad but there wasn't anything too good either. It read just meh. Having said that, I opened Netflix to check if Midnight in Paris is on there. It isn't. So, I did the next best thing. Opened youtube and started watching videos from and on Midnight in Paris randomly. I loved your video and while your breakdown and analysis of the movie brought back warm feelings about Paris, your last line summed up exactly how I was feeling right now and even I couldn't have figured it out myself. Excellent video.

It's a shame not to see it for real, though. Of course reality never measures up to fantasy, but if you lived your life in fear of being disappointed, you'd never have a single real experience. Paris is a truly beautiful city (even now, or at least when I was last there two years ago), one of the top 3 cities in Europe imo (Florence is one of the others for me, and my first love will always be my native Barcelona). You can still really appreciate the rose-tinted view that Allen paints even if you have seen the reality (in some ways more so, since your imagination is fleshed out by experience- on my first trip to Paris as an adult I spent two days going to all the locations featured in the film, and it was great fun!). As Rick Blaine says to Ilsa at the end of Casablanca (read out loud in your best Bogart impression), "we'll always have Paris"...

Loved this film. I love how this film talks about topics such as longing for a home, time and a place that may exist in the past or your imagination. between 97 and 2008 i've been obsessed with the idea of Paris in those years between 1890 and 1929. I've read Bohemiens by Dan Frank and anything i came across: Joyce, Bunuel, Hemingway, studied the arts of a lot of painters. Obsessed. Coudn't think about anything else for years. I was also dressing like guys at those time. After discovering the Clement bike alfred Jarry was riding at the times i was always around with vintage bikes from the time starting a passion that evenctually brought me to work with bikes and give up my artistic ambitions of my 20's. I still remember that when Midnight in Paris came out i was shocked for weeks. And it is true. in 2021 for my 40th birthday i finally went to Paris, and despite the emotions of walking down some streets i was obsessed about in my youth it was a bitter sweet feeling. It felt like the song La Boheme by Aznavour. I miss being 20s and be in that obsessed day dream state of mind. I was happy, malinconic and young. It was beautiful.

I disagree on your last statement though! I've been to Paris four times (and was supposed to go again last year but you know.....) and all visits were marvelous. It goes wrong when you start projecting your fantasies (and other people's fantasies) onto the city. When you accept the bad with the good, you will always have fond memories.
@StorytellingHeadshots3 жыл бұрын
I agree. I went to Paris (without really being in love with a fantasy of it beforehand-I really knew nothing of the legends around it-) And it became a very special place for me. But I think the key was I went in with absolutely no expectations. I brought a friend with me once who had built up Paris greatly in her mond ahead of time-and irinically she had a horrible time and even went back early. We had very different experiences. I was willing to just enjoy where we were and take it for what it was while she kept chasing this ghost of her expectations everywhere. She was always running from one famous spot to another, while I was free to discover “my own Paris” and it was great. I do still carry it with me. And I made a great community of friendships in Paris as well, which I think is the reason that it was a meaningful time. I think if you're chasing a fantasy you will always be disappointed. Maybe if you are already in “love” with the idea of Paris, you’ll have to find your real “Paris” anywhere but there.

Can’t agree with your closing comment. If you go to Paris and expect ONLY the romance, then yes you may be disappointed once you see the long lines, the pick pockets, the busy streets and honking cars. But it’s a major city. That’s what you get with major cities. Take Paris for what it is and you’ll find the romance. The gorgeous parks, the museums (not the louvre! Try the d’Orsay or L’orangerie.) the pastries, the food, the wine. So much to love about Paris!

After this movie, I had several magical moments in Paris. I stepped out of a pizzeria in the dark and I was, wait second, I know this place!!! because I stood at the exact same place, where the Taxi stopped. 😮❤ I was so excited and happy. And on another trip I went to this famous Jazz Club, alone.. But I was dancing and had a wonderful evening, danced with strangers. ❤I love Paris. And yes, it's also beautiful when it rains.

Omg, I am in love with your video! I just came here after watching the movie (that is now my favorite cause I'm madly in love with it!) But your video made me more in love! Thank you so much for all the information! I wish it was longer.

I LOVE this movie! I dream of going on a journey like his. Every aspiring writing MUST watch this. I enjoyed your video, and I would enjoy a longer version, if you should choose to create one. 👍

One of my favourite movies ever. Love Paris and the story. Love the Markets, cafes and buildings.

The film reminds me so much of Hemingway’s first book, and my favourite book, “Fiesta: the sun also rises”, the setting of France, the alcoholism and the ornate experience within the audience of friends and an observer.

The archaic style of presentation is perfect for this analysis, especially when explaining the different areas of Paris and their associated artists. Instead of a more conventional approach, the subject at hand is depicted as photos and maps strewn over a table, reflecting the themes of the past and nostalgia that is prevalent in the film.

What do you mean by archaic style of presentation? Genuinely curious because I have really been struggling with my presentation styles and how they fit the topic

I love this movie, thanks for the video! But I already went to Paris... and it was magical. I went to those stairs, but couldn't wait till midnight 😉. I made a french guy watch this for the first time in his life (we watched the movie with spanish audio and english subtitles while in Portugal, such an unique experience).
