Ah, the enchantment of nature's symphony! 🍃✨ With each dig, I draw closer to their awakening. Jason may jest, but to me, it's a wondrous miracle-a double brood, TRILLIONS of cicadas emerging in harmony. The soil, the compost, the earth's dance of life! #CicadaWatch #crunchymom #CicadaSymphony #NatureNurtures #DoubleBroodDelight #shorts

Reasons to hate cicadas: 1. They hate you so they’re is no reason to try to like them 2. They give people migraines 3. You can’t mow or weedeat your lawn without being harassed 4. They literally SCREAM when you touch them (it’s the most disturbing shrieking sound I have heard) 5. They run into your windshield and leave a streak 6. They enjoy latching onto long hair 7. One of their favorite pastimes is chasing people on their own property

Technically they’re not bugs, they’re an insect. I had to double check before I commented, they’re indeed classified if the class of “insecta.” An easy way to remember it is - insects only have 6 legs and can fly. Bugs have a different amount. Technically one can consider a crab a “bug”. Just remember, a creepy creature that’s buzzing around your head is an insect. A creepy thing on the ground and flightless is usually a “bug” aka arachnid/arthropod. Yuck

@@OverIt822 "Bug" can refer an insect, but is often used to refer to any terrestrial arthropod. Some may restrict the term "bug" to insects within the hemiptera (true bug) order, but this happens to be the order cicadas fall under.

I experienced something very crazy in Cape Cod one summer, our friends lived in the woods and they had what we called “The Hollywood House”, it was beautiful and they had an in-ground pool and everything. This was like 2008 I wanna say? It ended up being a swarm of cicadas of literal biblical proportions. We jumped in the pool thinking we’d escape them but as soon as we’d emerge for air, they were flying directly in our faces or whizzing past our ears incessantly. It was honestly a swarm. It felt like some kind of old school Roman torture, they’re huge, ungainly and very, very loud. After that I started looking into the patterns of cicadas because obviously I grew up with them but never to the point that they basically forced you to be inside your home during their mating season. I’m never wanting to experience that again.

Having personally experienced a dual brood hatch about a decade ago, it's about the furthest thing from a miracle. I had recently moved into a place on the edge of miles of woodlands and wetlands so there were tens of thousands right outside my walls and countless more deeper into the woods. Shut windows, a blaring A/C, and over the ear closed back amplified headphones couldn't keep the noise out. From about 5 o clock until almost 10 you couldn't hear yourself think, and it was maddening. I used to love the shrill of a cicada in the summer evening, but after that year the sound just puts me in a sour mood.
