Girl you’re not alone, I’ve been doing hair for almost 11 years, and I stopped this past December because my anxiety and my mental health working at the great clips for only 2 years in AZ. Ruined my confidence and ruined the way I look at clients/hair. I wanna get back to hair but I’m scared, and I see all these videos or see the girls I work with at a salon right now (I’m a client care coordinator) and I’m like “why can’t I be brave?”😞 I’m proud of you for taking this step towards what you want🤍🫶🏼 everything will work out the way it should be🤍🫶🏼

Congratulations! I’ll have to say.. a stylists success has nothing to do with having their own space or own salon. So don’t ever compare yourself to others. I know many stylists who have been Commission for their whole hair career and have been very successful and make LOTS of money. Some people don’t like salon studios and prefer to work with other stylist for the day to day interaction and to grow their craft when working alongside other stylists. Even though your own studio gives you a lot more freedom it could also feel very isolating. The good thing about this industry are the different options how stylist can make a living. This industry isn’t one size fits all. I’m happy for you and hope it works out!

I feel so behind but I also look at my life and just KNOW that if I would have started this career fresh out of high school or even in my early 20s, I wouldn’t have made it this far. 100% has to do with fear of the unknown. I went into my own salon suite only 3 months after i opened for business. Just took a leep of faith and it paid off. Totally has to do with your area too. Im now in a different state and finding myself having to go to a commission salon to build my clientele here. But taking this leep for you is gonna open SO many doors, trust me you got this!

I’m a renter at a sola salons!! I’ve been there for 4 years and i am so happy for you!! I’ll be moving into a larger space in the fall and the opportunity to grow my business with people to work for me etc. my recommendation is to use gloss genius as your POS. It’s so efficient, good interface, easy for the client, supplies a waitlist for you if you need it and runs all your financial reports for your taxes etc. soooo great. Congrats Sam! Be proud of how far you’ve come. I recall when you discussed changing careers & going to cosmetology school but being nervous since you started much later than others. Regardless, you’ve come so far and gained the experience and have the passion to be successful. Proves that it’s never too late to get started or relearn/pivot and still do well in life. I am a huge fan of yours!! Also a commission stylist for 12 years. I don’t think anything is wrong with being a commission stylist if it works for your lifestyle. I certainly don’t think being a suite owner means you’re “further ahead” or more accomplished. Different things work for different people. Many people open suites and fail miserably because the cost outweighs the benefit, especially in this economy. I just think we ought not make being a commission stylist seem as if it’s just a stepping stone. All that said I wish you all the luck in your new endeavor! ❤

1,000%! And I did touch on that in the beginning. I, in no way, want to make it seem like being commission isn't also a success. For me, personally, having my own brand, it just makes the most sense to have my own space and it's something I've always wanted at some point. But if you (or anyone) can find a salon home where you feel happy, respected, and at peace, THAT'S the dream! :)
