My assumption is that the creatures down there are an intelligent sort of cryptid. They're form of hunting is to bait humans into trying to take the crystals on their head and eat them, but for some reason or another that's the only way they can harm humans. Which is why they didn't kill the little girl or when they clearly could have. But they like to torment and trick humans as well seeing ass they talked to Margaret and the little girl in order to fuck with them.
