The engineering side to colin and the jack of all that is Jamie is what got me hooked on these guys in the first place. As time consuming and exhausting as it is, boat projects are really fun to watch! But the heart of this show is in the people, experiences and life long friends that you bring along with you, absolutely adore every one of you now and hope to one day ask permission to board myself.

I'm no engineer, but with over 20 yrs in manufacturing, I've found the best way to find the problem is just keep eliminating what's NOT the problem...you'll get there every time, eventually! Been dealing with an oil leak on my truck, eliminated several possibilities and narrowed it down to just 2, fortunately you have to remove one part to get to the other, so I won't be breaking any knuckles on nuts and bolts that don't need to be removed, I can go right to the root of the problem now. Gotta love those jobs where you need to do about 6 hours of labor to replace a $10-$15 gasket or some $2.00 O'rings...

Cheap easy low-tech way of isolating a noise: cut a section of garden hose. One end on suspect area of the engine the other end to your ear. Husband does this all the time on car engines.

My dad would do the same thing with a sawed off broom stick handle. One end to his ear, and the other around the engine, touching different parts. He could find a bad rocker, lifter or valve issue very quickly.

All the above are excellent improvised mechanics stethoscopes. Sometimes, they can even be better than an actual stethoscope, by eliminating some high pitched frequencies. Good deductive, minimally invasive, diagnostic procedure nonetheless!

All these recent problems. Parlay waited until you were near shore. She surely must love Colin. When she was near death he rescued her and tended to her needs. Then she got to see all the wonderful places Colin took her to. Few Lagoon 450's have had such adventures.

Bummer regarding the sail drive but she hit the nail on the head at the end there in that one of the many reasons the channel is great is watching Colin diagnose and carry out the repairs himself…
@jimh8713
@jimh8713 8 ай бұрын
Colin there is no better person to attempt a circumnavigation than you. Biggest thing is your ability to keep your cool under pressure. Your understanding of systems and how they are designed to interact is critical for troubleshooting, something that is not easy for everyone. Everyone on Parlay is so fortunate you’re at the helm.
@mkllove

Nothing stops you and your crew, it just means a small course adjustment in plans ! Good thing about drives like that, there will likely be lots of old spares available online or hopefully locally until you can arrange an upgrade/replacement to another model better suited. Maybe a better unit can be swapped with some help from manufacturer ? Maybe some manufacturer will be willing to make Parlay a test mule by sending 2 sets of different paired drives to use with their return planned so they can be disassembled by factory in exchange for a new or used set of 3 (1 spare ?) for permanent usage ? Think of all the owners of Lagoon models watching your boat as a leader in what they'll need in future... you're a pathfinder vehicle.

Mechanic tip When looking for a sound and easy way to find it is this. Put a 2 foot section of broom handle on the part you want to find the sound. Put the other end against your ear about 1 inch under your ear hole about your ear lobe. . Then just move the broom handle to different parts you will be surprised what you can hear inside different parts when even the engine is running. No need to jump into the water

You can’t learn this in school, his mechanical engineering degree forms the foundation but it takes an entirely different skill set to do what Colin does. I can safely say that if Colin had to pay for others to do what he does… this dream would not be happening. I sense the constant “big fixes “ are taking its toll. That fiberglass dusting he got heading to his family’s cabin was a killer. Doing that job in an absolute factory perfect environment would suck, doing it on the water…over the top SUCK yet he handled it. Colin’s leadership instills confidence in his crew and anyone that gets to sail on Parlay is fortunate.

My SD50 drives rotted away last summer and I had to "force upgrade" to SD60 drives. My goodness they are insanely better. I can hear them shift all the way up on my flybridge. My SD50s had the same upgrade kit you installed, but still lots of problems. It wasn't cheap, at about $12.5k per drive installed. However, I also spent about $4k on lower shaft replacement parts for my SD50 2 years ago. The drives themselves cost about $7k with the SD50 conversion kit. However Yanmar wasn't willing to honor any warranties unless I had them pro installed. But with all your certifications, maybe they'd let you. If it's in your budget, I'd upgrade. Most of your problems will go away...

Hey Collin. Dave and I were in St Andrews NB 🇨🇦 today at St. Andrews Brewing Company and Steve walked into the building. We were sitting on the patio. Dave says he looks familiar do you recognize him and I said yeah. I went to the head and I said to Steve my husband says he recognise you are you on KZbin? He says yeah on Parlay Revival and I said 🤣🤣 holy shit. Anyway he sat with us for about 40 mins. Answered all our questions and shot the shit. It was the best. Maybe someday we will meet. We love you guys 💛❤️💜🇨🇦

Two engines means you have a back up. It also means twice as many failures and twice the maintenance and repair costs . Add in a generator and you have 3 engines to break down .

Love this episode- I mean Possible fire, Big lobsters, failed sea drive. About the "fire"/ Being a classic VW guy (you know - the ones that only catch on fire occasionally!!!) Well a guy has invented a passive fire extinguisher in the form of a pliable tube that quickly melts thru and sprays retardant before you even know there is a problem. Believe its called "Blazecut" Comes in different lengths. I'm 74 and been in the outboard/marina business as a mechanic all my life. worked on many Volvo stern drives . I believe you might have trapped some debris while motoring and bent one of your gears- ( just a total guess you understand) was unheard of in stern drives. But maybe pattern the gears and look for a tight spot if you can not actually see a damaged gear. The other thought is - you did not power the drive shaft in reverse to see if gear damage might be there rather than the clutch. Can't wait to hear what you found out. Cheers Bill.🤔
