Mike, it is like watching Laurel and Hardy with you and Aaron. Aaron is a good man. I never get tired of watching your videos. If the designers of equipment had to work on replacing certain parts they would see the error of their ways. You both sure work well together.

I don't think it's an error. I think they design it that way so the dealers can make money on the service.

I never owned any Cat equipment but I can testify that Mack is extremely proud of their repair parts also. Anyway, shop days are intertaining, and a demonstraion of your commitment to maintain your equipment, so many people today have adopted the, " Run it till it quits" program rarely check the fuids, don't own a grease gun, and only know how to put fuel in it, but not always the right kind. Growing up our mantra was, Fix it up, wear it out. Make it do, or do without. Because everything we had was worn out and falling apart when we got it. Good times, we can laugh about it now.

That part about Cat equipment being so great ended years ago. The old stuff (like Chris’s D6 or his 977) was hard to kill… but the newer stuff, moreso with the emissions crap… just look at it sideways and it breaks down. And the old stuff, parts are easy.. Hell, they are often Cummins engines and you can get those parts easy… the new stuff.. well, good luck.. you’ll need it.

Even for the discounted price of 450 bucks - I would have looked hard for a way to put an extra 2 way switch in somewhere. - PS the reason the part is so hard to get at is so that not only will you pay 750 for the part, you will pay their service department a similar price for them to fit it!

During summer break from law school I would work at Caterpillar in Montgomery, IL bending hydraulic tubes in BLDG K but sometimes I would be pulled to R bay to help fix whatever wheel loader or excavator coming off the assembly line that is having issues. I have found that working on the bigger equipment is much easier but more in depth especially electrical connections. Cat just closed that plant down and moved all of that manufacturing to Peoria, IL

Mike, I remember in a earlier video that you needed some metal platting to mount the lights and hitch to the back of the new truck! Need a new bed, I'm thinking you maybe able to borrow again from the same source (Come-on, it's not like it is currently being used)! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I know you asking, why is the switch plug on the inside? Well for one, so there is no water damage to the plug and joist stick, and two (2) so that it does not cost you $700 from cat, but $2100 from cat. You know, $700 for the part, and $1400 for the labor to replace the joist stick, because it takes two hours to replace! 😂😂 What would be funny is, they redesign it to the outside and the next time it breaks, the cost to replace it rises to $3k! Now there's a complaint! 😂😂. And we all thought you were going to re-bore the bucket arm!

Hey Mike, Arron, That little Cat with the bad switch costing $700 would have seen me dissecting the switch itself to repair or replace it. I've literally used a razor blade or an exactto (?) tool to open it up and fix it. I then find some product to resell the button to keep moisture and dust out! So far I'm about 70% fixed and 30% fail... Since you replaced the assembly itself it wouldn't hurt to attempt to fix the old one. You might even be able to sell it if you never need one again. You and Aaron have quite the friendship, love you two bickering like you do. 😅 😂

Couple things. Thing #1: Tip for you that I use to bend thin metal like that is to use an adjustable wrench. Tweak the jaws as close together as you can, and slide a rugged pipe over the handle. You can have as much leverage as you have swing space and pipe you can lift. Orient the the head in the positive direction so you don't compromise the jaw. Over tweak the piece you a bending just a trifle because there will be a little springback. 2nd thing is a question. Let me preface by saying I AM NOT A WELDER! I do watch numerous fab channels, and a common denominator I see a lot is NOBODY seems to clean up their steel before they weld anymore. I learned to weld waaaaay back in 8th grade metal shop. We were taught to use a grinder and cleanup all our mating surfaces... and a little bit more. My father welded almost every week for someone in the neighborhood, or himself. It wasn't uncommon for him to spend 7 hours grinding, and 2 hours welding. Do cruddy welds actually hold, or is it not photogenic and done off camera? Glad you got your odds and ends caught up, and thanks for sharing.

My first two new (early 70's) pieces of equipment were Cat; a D6 and a 225 track hoe - they didn't have 100 hours on them combined. I never got a full week's work out of either one of them. Dealer was great about fixing things under warranty, but it would take anywhere from three days to three weeks. I didn't keep them 6 months and took a beating on getting rid of them. I haven't owned a Cat piece since. Truthfully, don't really like running Cat either; they are slow and cumbersome pieces of equipment. I WILL admit that that 6 of Chris's is a sweetheart though.

Please find me something that is easy to work on. My '73 Chevy P/U was fairly easy. You could see most everything and get your hands on it while still having eyeballs on it. If it rained, I could crawl into the engine compartment and pull the hood partially down. Been working on my "03 Trailblazer. I love the truck but can't get to anything. Trying to get a plastic emissions something or other off. Couldn't see it, couldn't get hands on it, definitely at the same time. Finally got it! My left wrist is all bloody. Now to put the new one on. Wondering about working on the Case or Hyundai. At least with the Deeres, you always have Clint. That's my rant.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and videos. Nows the time for Hyundai to make you an offer you can’t refuse on a replacement for that excavator. 😂 On a side note I recently saw a video of an impressively quiet air compressor and thought you might find it interesting. Company is called California Air Tools. The only strange part is they only seem to have 1HP and 2HP units and just stack more units in parallel for larger capacity. Works since noise is not cumulative, at least that’s my impression. Might be something to have in your back pocket in case your shop compressor ever gives up the ghost. Who knows maybe they would even send you one. Could do a video on how to retrofit your older systems to make them quite. Wishing you and your family the best.

Hey Guys, great video. If you ever have another switch or something on a joystick go bad, you might want to try pulling it apart and checking the number on the switch itself. I'd bet that CAT, like most manufacturers don't make their own switches, and you might be able to punch whatever number you find on it into the googler and be able to buy it directly online for $10-$20 and just solder it in. You might not find any number either, but you're so close at that point, it's worth a shot IMHO. BTW. I first heard about you through your interview on Bryan Brown's working words podcast. Good stuff. Thanks for the videos!
