Dude you just helped me feel so safe and more human because I have been struggling to function executively for a few months to the point of hating food because eating felt like a chore, and I love food. Something that helped me with food (since starting anything is a chore in itself) was “make the food and sit in front of it as long as it would take to eat it”. Then I didn’t have to make the food and eat the food, just make it. I trained myself to make the food, and it was easier to approach eating it.

Agreed. I thought I was one of a very small club that has a room like this. I walk in, and walk right back out. I don’t know where to start. Not even my ADD meds help me concentrate on the task at hand. I’ve been told 35+ different ways how to just start, and I get so overwhelmed I just shut down and do absolutely nothing. Then, I’m mad at myself for wasting the time. It’s a vicious cycle….

Speaking for myself and a lot of my customers (I own a housekeeping company) we have have rooms like this. We all have days and months like this. Don’t be hard on yourself. You are not alone. Find a way that help YOU clean the best. My mom picks up 10 things at a time. I start at a corner and work clock wise. Everyone is different. But even picking up 10 things a day works. My therapist said “if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing poorly”. Meaning it’s better to try a little than not try at all! You’re doing great! ♥️♥️♥️

Thanks for sharing this Garrett! This is definitely one of the biggest things I’ve had to deal with with depression. I don’t have the energy to deal with something immediately so I leave it, then as it piles up just the thought of trying to do it is so intimidating it makes me panic, and then it’s a spiral. The more I panic the more I don’t want to do it, which makes it worse and worse! I’ve been trying really hard to get better at this, but I still slip up sometimes. I’ve been trying a method of like, every time I leave my room I’ll bring out like 2-3 items. Something really small and manageable, that makes me feel accomplished. I think this can help with things like that room, maybe just go in there with a bag and pile some stuff into it, then just sort what’s in that one bag. Small, accomplishable tasks that make you feel good and productive are really helpful, especially when you realize that you’re actually enjoying doing it. Thanks for sharing the mud and being so authentic with us. I think stuff like this would make a great live stream too! Like a “let’s clean our rooms together!” And people can share their before and after photos and we can all be accountability buddies :) good luck with setting up your ghost room! It’s able to be contained and one room is manageable. Also, I’m commenting on this before the video is done… you are doing something that I have just learned about and that’s called body doubling. Garrett. I just discovered you, like, a month ago, and can I say, I am so glad you exist!! All your videos bring me so much joy and I really wish I could meet you in person. You're such a lovely human being, and thank you for sharing snippets of your life on the internet. You've made me smile and laugh countless times. Now to answer your question! Something I've been putting off is surprisingly, also cleaning my room 😅 I know, not very original, but very true! It's just so easy to have things accumulate, you know? I like doing little clean-outs every few months and I am very overdue for one. I plan on getting it done this weekend though! Thanks for the encouragement and support! Love you!! 💖

It can be so difficult to start cleaning when it’s overwhelming and can’t think of somewhere to start. Filming is a great idea to feel like someone is there with you and gives the task another purpose. Kinda similar to body doubling which helps too. Just having someone else around really helps feel motivated

Garret, fellow adhd person here, for me my garage is my junk drawer room. It gets badddddddddd finally one day I just decided to start completely over. I ordered a big trash pick up and I threw everything away. I didn’t go through anything. I had to just except that if it was sitting in a giant trash pile for a year then it wasn’t important. I think if I would tried to go through everything I would’ve never fully finished. This worked for me and I’ve been better ever since.

Garrett, I feel like a lot of people have a room like this in their home, at the very least I know I do, so don’t feel alone. I’m super proud of you for getting it cleaned up! As soon as my brother moved out about a year ago, my parents turned his room into a hoarder’s paradise. I know my room when I was younger was absolutely terrible, but it’s gotten way better over the years. Sometimes you just have to lock yourself in the room to get it clean and I’m glad I’m not the only one who does this. Again, great job at getting it cleaned up!
