I was a young kid, watching this. My uncle James was watching this casually from the kitchen. He would often visit from Florida, we lived in New York. As this song progressed he started crying. When I realized what he was doing, I felt really awkward and weird: I don't think I'd seen a grown up cry before. There was uncle James in his suit crying over this scene. Later on I found out his marriage was breaking up and it made sense I'll never forget that, but now when I watch this as a middle aged man, I understand.

I’m 42, and I still watch this timeless classic from time to time…… And I still wish I could free big bird from the cage, especially when I see him crying tears. Carol Spinney really did a good job in putting deep emotions in big bird when he sang this song, and he will sadly be missed by us all. :-(

This was my first moviegoing experience at the tender age of four and a half and this song still does it to me to this day. I was really worried Big Bird wouldn't actually get home throughout the whole movie because when you're that age, you don't have enough life experience you don't stop to consider that you watch him there every day on TV so of course he's gonna get home. This song did very little to set my mind at ease. Even now I wish I could rip that cage door open and grab Big Bird's hand and take him home.

I agree I always thought he knows it bad but his brother is the one that is a really bad seed
@afriendofbean4 жыл бұрын
@Artie Race That's true. Sid didn't like the fact from the beginning about seeing Big Bird in a show because when his brother Sam said to him "you know Sid, people will pay money to see that bird" where Sid thought he was saying that the two of them should go see Big Bird perform in a theater where his response was "nah, I wouldn't pay to see no bird" with Sam saying with anger "no, people will pay us to see that bird, us us us!" So for that, maybe Sid thought it would be sad to capture Big Bird and put him in a show which is why he (Sid) is crying here.

I never saw this when I was a kid. I was too young to go to the theaters when this premiered (I was three years old), and I'm not sure my parents were aware this movie existed when it was released on VHS (was it released on VHS in the 1980's?) I think I first saw this movie in its entirety when I was 18, 19, or 20. I didn't cry, necessarily, but it did choke me up quite a bit. You don't have to cry when watching this scene, but if you DON'T feel bad for Big Bird, then you have no heart.
