A lion knows that a hyena’s jaw could injure them to the point they wouldn’t be able to fend for themselves. The lions however can easily avoid that because hyenas are slow and could potentially kill the hyena but there’s a solid chance the hyena would latch on if they went for the kill killing them both. It’s a mix of mutual fear anger and respect.
