Band of Brothers, produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, the follow on series to Saving Private Ryan. One of the best TV series ever made.

How did this movie lost the 1998 Best Picture Oscars to "Shakespeare in Love" with Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow? I am at lost of words.

My dad was in WWII and Korea, his father was a doughboy in France in WWI. The 20th century wars seem close to me, since I grew up with all the stories. The one thing about every veteran I knew growing up is that they just wanted to get home and continue their lives. They never bragged about anything they did, and mostly they kept the memories to themselves, glad to be civilians again.

Yeah so as a person who has “locked up” during a traumatic experience I can sympathize with Uppam. Like you want to do something but you can’t and he’ll carry that shit with him until the day he dies.

I think that the Uppam was just an example of most guys. It’s not natural to kill somebody. He was just becoming a soldier. And I’ve been told that there is a point where even seasoned men can get to where you can freeze from fear or you react. I’m not sure can can grasp full control of that.

As an army veteran, no way I'd let my army brother get knife in the chest. It's a movie. Wasn't there.

I.m glad you have this page. You are authentic without being theatrical, and you're so sincere. I hope you do Forrest Gump and Green Mile, and I hope you do them soon. Keep up the good work; If you film it, we will come, lol

17:19 - The reason why Ryan "gets to" go home has to do with some law (I'm not gonna get it just right, hopefully someone can clarify who knows better), but basically it goes something like this: this movie is loosely based on some account about a mother who really did lose all but one of her children, and there is some rule somewhere or something that says if that's the case one child has to come back home so that a person's family name isn't completely "wiped out" from existence.

Early on in America's entry into WW II, 5 Sullivan brothers enlisted with the understanding that they could all serve in the same outfit together, while they were serving aboard the USS Juneau, it was torpedoed by a Japanese sub and all 5 brothers were killed, after that, the US military made it a policy that siblings could not serve together in areas of conflict, there was a ship named in their honor called the USS The Sullivans, later decommissioned and made into a museum.

Ryan is the last of his blood line. That's what the Bixby letter was telling us. Her blood line ended with her five sons.

This question about whether they should send a group of men to look for one guy because what if somebody in the group dies doing this task. Where do you think they are? They are in the middle of a war, They are at risk if they’re looking for nobody and just carrying out their duties. I never understood this question at all. Except unless. This team was headed out of the country and being returned home and we stopped from going home to search for private Ryan. Then you could question them, losing their lives, looking for one guy. But they’re in a country that is in the middle of war and their risk factor is as high, whether they’re looking for him or whether they’re fighting town or country side. What am I missing people?

I suppose the justification for sending multiple people to save one life in this case has to do mostly with public relations. If a story got out that a mother last all four of her sons to war, it would likely make headlines and demoralize people and their support for the war effort. So in this case risking the lives of a few to save Ryan may be worth it in the long run to safeguard morale.

Yeah I definitely agree. It’s just bizarre to me that thousands of mothers also lost multiple sons in similar situations but why did Private Ryan get a ticket out. Is it just a completely random thing? Maybe timing played a part in it too
@iKvetch558
@iKvetch558 9 ай бұрын
Spielberg told the story he wanted to tell...as opposed to what really happened...so he had the Army send a team to find him. If that had really happened, then public relations would be as good a reason as any...the people of the US had reacted pretty negatively to the 5 Sullivan Brothers all being killed together, so you could see why they would want to try and avoid losing 4 Niland Brothers separately.

Sorry mate! I'm super late on this one and watched Forrest Gump first. Again, glad you're on the Tom Hanks kick right now, his movies are all incredible. This one is definitely a tough one to watch, especially that opening scene. Once again, "Big" is my recommendation, it's 1980's Tom Hanks and way more light hearted than this one and Forest Gump I promise you. There should be no tears at all involved! Cheers homie!

The reason they were getting Pvt Ryan out is because he is the last of his Blood Line to carry on his families Blood Line. It's what we do in America!!!

Standard comment I post on most reactions to SPR that I come across...hope you don't mind a bit of copy/pasting. Saving Private Ryan is incredibly realistic in most every way, with a very few exceptions...such as bullets not being able to kill you more than a few inches underwater. One thing to know, pay no mind at all to that man who took off his helmet on the beach and then got shot in the head...that next shot would have killed him even if he had kept his helmet on. The helmets of WW2 would almost never stop a bullet, except under very very rare circumstances. The movie is not a true story, and it differs from the actual history of D-Day in many ways...but the basic plot is loosely based on the 4 Niland Brothers, one of whom served with the 101st Airborne Division. However, when 3 Nilands were reported dead, no mission was sent to get the last brother, and it turned out that one brother that had been thought dead had actually only been captured. There really was a Company C of the 2nd Rangers that landed on Omaha Beach, but they were commanded by Captain Ralph Goranson, and they did not land quite where it was shown in the film. Probably the most important historical thing that Spielberg got wrong is that he had the boats that carried the Rangers to the beach being driven by Americans...they were not. On D-Day, the boats that carried the US Rangers to the beach were driven by UK sailors of the Royal Navy. There are many other things in the film that are not accurate to the real history of D-Day, but that one really fails to honor some of the men that fought and died at Omaha Beach, so it is definitely the one most worth noting.
