I mainly photograph weddings. Often also in combination with video, for which I use the Canon GX10 (4 K 50p). My two cameras are 5D III (35mm) and 5DSR (85mm), which I operate with flash throughout (except in churches) and use a flash bracket system for this. The cameras are pre-programmed for different scenarios (indoors, outdoors, sports) and even with an aperture of 1.4 (85), e.g. of the wedding ring, I have razor-sharp images (see my homepage). Both cameras are extremely fast, when my "R" is still looking for the right eye, I've already taken a few pictures with the dinosaurs. My R is allowed to work in the photo booth and I will stick with my DSLR's for the long haul. The image quality of the 5DSR is so fantastic and will probably never let me down, even in 2022 at the very front. I'm glad I'm not alone in my opinion 😄

Exactly my experience, and I own an r5. To be honest I dont understand all this hype about eye detect, it is slower and way less precise than doing it with the old recompose. Have benn shooting exclusively milc for about 2 years and never was convinced about the camera, because of the eyepiece sensor and sleep behaviour of the camera, which seems to cause very frustation in the canon comunity forum in other users, it gets in the way for someone who's working on personal projects and wants the photos more than messing with the camera. As soon as I purchased my 1st and only rf lens, and faced again with another combersome "feature", I decided it is enough and time to upgrade my game and cameback to dslrs

After carrying my 5D III and a full bag of lenses on many long hikes I bought into Fuji's mirrorless system. My Fuji couldn't be more different from my Canon and it certainly produces excellent quality at half the weight. But, I'm planning an Iceland trip and taking my 5D, in fact I've just bought a 16-35 F2.8 to add to my bag for the trip. There is just something about my 5D III that reminds me of my years of film photography and why I fell in love with photography in the first place. The way the 5D feels and the tones it produces (particularly skin tones) are perfect, even if it crushes my spine.

I love it! I was very happily using a 5Diii for portraiture and I got the stupid upgrade bug when I decided to start dabbling with making KZbin videos. Initially I bought a Rebel SL2 for the flippy screen but ultimately didn’t like carrying two cameras- SL2 for KZbin videos and 5Diii for portraits. So I got into the EOS RP, then EOS R, which both left me wanting because they lacked the tactile feel and snappy response of the 5D series, so I then went on to an R6. Now, thousands of dollars later, I mostly use my iPhone for KZbin videos and I miss my 5D 😂 mostly because I hate the electronic viewfinder. But basically I wish I’d listen to this kind of advice all along. I guess I had to learn the hard way

I love your insights here. While I'm not a Canon shooter, I used to sell cameras and the 5DS/SR were some of the most criminally underrated cameras out there. I absolutely think this is one of Canon's best DSLRs ever made. Personally I'm still using a Nikon D610 for alot of my day to day work - it's not the same as the SR but its about the same principles that you mention. Fantastic video!

My 5Ds remains my primary stills camera. 8 years later it stands toe-to-toe with anything out there in 35mm full frame format in terms of image quality. The high ISO complaints were never valid, it's excellent to 3200 and very good at 6400 and 12800. The DR complaints were somewhat valid in that other cameras had more base ISO DR. But it has good base ISO DR and with today's RAW processors you can easily get 14ev out of it via noise reduction (it measures 12.4ev, out of camera, at DxO). It's robust and reliable with a great AF system. It just works, delivering incredible detail in large prints. I complimented it with an R6 for those times when I might want insane shooting speed or extreme low light performance (i.e. stacked astro; 4k under a full moon). But I still often grab the 5Ds for sports as the AF system is more than up to the task and while 5 fps might sound slow, it's more than enough for most situations. It's a brilliant camera even in 2023.

Such a great message, and glad you're enjoying the 5DSR still! As primarily a landscape photographer/youtuber, I see little need to add a much more expensive camera while the images I get currently from the 5DSR are awesome. I was able to pick one up second had with just 3k shutter actuations a few years ago for $1100. When I get tempted by shinier, newer, bigger/medium format alternatives, I look at the price difference and keep on shooting with what is working! Like you said, no sense parting at a loss and shelling out a ton of cash for a 0.5% improvement.

Coincidentally the first job I got offered after taking possession was a poetry performance. The client specifically requested camera with silent shutter. My D850 would not have cut it and I would have passed the job. So was meant to be.

I bought the 5DSR a year ago when canon offered its ridiculous fire sale on them. Wasn’t actually looking for a new DSLR as my 6D was just fine, but at that price I thought it well worth the upgrade to 50mpx. The interesting thing is that it is actually my newest camera by model year. I shoot this and a Leica M9M that was introduced in 2012 and am happy with both as they serve completely different purposes. Oh, I sold the 6D shortly thereafter too.

When it was time to replace, I moved to Fujifilm (both X and GFX) but that was a bit of a mistake. I’m now on Nikon’s Z system and happy as ever. @jacobh5817
@jacobh5817 2 жыл бұрын
@@Being_Joe We’ve had about 6 X and 3 GFX cameras with a total of 14 lenses in our studio over a period of 6 years. We had many reliability issues with both cameras and lenses, up to the point of losing shots. Next to that, the eye-AF is pretty much useless. It erratically jumps from one to the other eye (in certain positions) and it often front-focuses. I’ve read that the X-H2S is supposed to be better, but I haven’t tested that. We do fashion and beauty photography for international magazines and nowadays many require at least 7 or 8,000 pixels on the long end. That rules out the X cameras. Finally, our tech-editors disliked the RAF-files. It’s extra effort to edit correctly and get rid of the greenish skintones and magenta cast in shadows (depending circumstances). With the Z7II and Z9 you can tell that Nikon has a lot of experience with professionally used cameras. Solid, robust, fast and the NEF-files are very easy to edit. On top of that, the Z-lenses are fantastic. Even the moderatly priced 1.8 primes. Having said that, I still have an X-Pro2 with two primes for some personal work…

@@jacobh5817 Good feedback. I feel all cameras made in the past ten years produce good quality depending on what you need. I like the RAF files but I use complicated raw processors to process the files. Even Nikon I find to get the best results you need to use NX Studio. The Z series had so many criticisms early on I was worried for the future of Nikon. It is an industry secret. I bought 1 when new, another when the price dropped through the floor right after the 5Div came out, and a 5Ds (my others are 5DsR's) just as a brand new backup because I saw it BRAND NEW on sale for $900 last year. These cameras are fantastic, especially for those the prefer OVF's (honestly working in bright light or even in low light in the studio EVF's are counter productive for me as they CONSTANTLY cause my pupil to adjust dramatically which results in extreme eye fatigue when working all day. Oh, and I just like them better. I have "fast cameras" and I have slow cameras (medium format) the 5Ds is plenty fast for what I shoot, actually my slow cameras are as well but I typically use my "fast cameras" - the canon's when shooting hand held and my slow cameras mounted on some form of camera support...

Love your perspective. Agree with your thought process on what works for you professionally. No issues with it. I'm a baby amateur having shot for 5 years now. For me, one of the most important things you mentioned is upgrade because it meets needs, not wants. For me, the jump to mirrorless happened in Jan. 2022 because I shoot Action (dance at events), sports, and wildlife. I needed silent blackout free shooting, high frame rates, and higher resolution. The added IBIS, AI - subject detect eye autofocus, longer battery life, WYSIWYG EVF and the addition of pre-capture have not only given me more confidence that I'll capture better images, but improve my enjoyment of shooting. And so, I would personally say, that upgrade for one of two reasons - you do not need to - if a newer camera has tools that save you time, energy or effort - because time is money, or/and it brings you more joy in shooting.

Nice video! I once took a picture of some electrical switchgear with a Canon 550D with the 17-85 cheap zoom lens. Has it printed at 40 x 60 cm and put it on the wall. When I tell people that it is so incredibly sharp because I rented a Hasselblad body with a prime lens, they all see the fantastic quality. When I tell them it came from a 550D with the 17-85 mm zoom, all they see how fuzzy it is and all the aberrations. It was taken with F8 from a tripod in RAW and carefully "developed". Even with this modest equipment, the end result is astonishingly good compared with my Asahi Pentax Spotmatic II.

Hear hear Scott. As a fun side-hobby I’m part of the Facebook Six Megapixel club, I’ve recently submitted some macro test shots taken with a Fuji S1 Pro (from 2000), it’s a 3 megapixel camera, the quality is outstanding when viewed on the web ( and on various hand held devices), because most of the web delivers at 72DPI. For paid work I use slightly more modern Nikon/Fuji DSLRS, I don’t need anything else as I shoot for print, and most pictures are laid out at A5, A6 or smaller. Some newspapers only require images at 200 DPI. Yes I could pixel peep on a big screen and get all worried about a 500% zoom that is a bit blurry, but I know it is invisible when the client runs off thousands of copies in the print works, and next week it will probably be wrapping fish and chips.

Switching to mirrorless is a lot more than just the lack of a mirror sound, but if you mainly shoot things that aren’t alive in the studio it’s true you don’t need it. If you shoot people, animals, action, etc the speed and sophistication of the AF system and the increase in burst rate you can get along with other tech can make a big difference in how your shoot and how many shots you keep.

I'm a portrait photographer, my clients are not models. I started my business on a Canon 60D, then a Canon 7D, then an EOS R where I've been since 2018 The only difference in my workflow since moving from a DSLR is not focus and recomposing. I absolutely loved my DSLR's and I absolutely love my R. I shoot the same amount of shots of my clients on my R as I did on the DSLR. Burst rate doesn't work for me. My portrait sessions don't rely on speed.

@@gregshawphotography8828 it definitely depends on what you do. Many flashes can’t keep up with the burst speeds modern mirrorless cameras are capable of anyway, for people who shoot in the studio with strobes primarily. Working with animals outdoors, I’ve found that animal eye autofocus paired with capable tracking and fast bursts gives more frames to choose from with action shots than I could get with my DSLR. In general, I feel the AF performance, especially eye AF, makes a big difference in working with moving subjects even at a slower pace in a studio by making nailing focus one less thing to think about while working. I didn’t work much with flagship DSLRS that were intended for fast action but I think the price point of say a 1DX line camera vs what I’m shooting with now, a Sony A7R IIIa, makes incredible performance more accessible for those whose work can benefit. Not to mention the size - top end DSLRs are massive. Personally I much prefer the feel of a small mirrorless like a Sony or Fuji, though I know people with hands bigger than mine tend to like a little more grip. In any case, there’s definitely a case for not spending excessively on gear when what you’ve got is serving you just fine, but I feel there was an oversimplification of the benefits of mirrorless technology.

As you pointed out this is absolutely not how a business should be run. its beliefs like this that make even the most mundane services cost a fortune. ok I gotta finish the video now.

We have similar sentiments but there was ONE main reason for getting into the R system for me -- it was the RF 28-70 f/2.0. There are times my assignments requires me to be quick and having this has ease the need of changing primes to shoot wide open. Otherwise, yes, any cameras you pick up today works and will earn you your money.

Great video. Im a wildlife and bird photographer. The 5DSR is simply the best Canon has produced, even today. That being said, i also have a R5. If you get the shot, the 5DSR always wins. But, that is difficult with subjects that are very close with shallow depth of field, example using my primary 300 2.8 ii. The R5 wins here by getting more in focus eyes. But once you open up the distance the 5DSR shines. Im blessed to have both these camera's to work with. And yes, both bodies handle the 2X iii like butter with the 300mm.

@@livvylatham9584 the reason I'm asking is that I shoot street photo and landscapes on 5DSr, and I've seen moire a few times in YEARS. What I do notice, however, is that 5DSr gives out more acutance at the edges which helps the edges survive the in-camera denoise algorithms better. Thanks to that, iso 3200 jpegs on 5DSr are as usable as 5DS at 1600. The less acute edges of 5DS give in more easily to this rather crude in-camera denoise algorithm, and 5DSr takes higher ISO before small detail is really mushy. The in-camera sharpening on 5DS can't compensate for that, because the detail is lost to the NR before sharpening is applied.

G_d bless you!: I’m still using (buying new batt’s for) a 5Dsr (high resolution) and a 5D III (for low light, availeble light) and just retired a 1Ds II (for clinical photography). I’m inundated (as are we all) with SO much INNOVATION!! But I just reviewed my work and have been wondering what do I have to upgrade to?!!? Hearing you, I can just pause and be happy with the full kit of DSLR Lenses. (Gawd I’ve just now rounded out the bag of great glass). I don’t want to expense out the whole gang in R type lenses. I used the 1Ds II with it’s robust toughness to go to the middle east photojournalism. I wish those exposures had more resolution now for cropping and post production tweaks. I would consider another super resolution camera in the near future but I can’t afford TWO SETS OF LENSES so I’ll probably stay DSLR. My video is done on video equipment and isn’t a main thrust for me.

I love watching your channel, to reassure me that I just don't need to "upgrade" just because DXO says I need more dynamic range. Most cameras got "good enough" about 8 years ago. Canon make, and have made, some of the most underrated cameras (as well as many well-received models of course). £300 gets you an immaculate 6D, £1000 gets you an immaculate 5DSR ... and so on. I haven't met many club photographers that are "better" than a Canon 6D. If you can't get a great shot with a £300 6D then the problem is probably you, not the lack of pixels. The way I look at it is, the 6D is light years better than the original 5D (I've owned them both) .... and yet the 5D was taking most of the award-winning images back in the mid 2000s. Great cameras don't become bad cameras. The 5DSR capability was science-fiction in recent memory. 50Mp, weather-sealed, proven 5D rugged-build, Canon lens system...... available for a grand??!!!!!!! I mean come on.

Sound advice, I got tired of carrying two 1Series bodies, lenses and MBP through airports and decided to sell the 1Ds3 and 1Dx and replace them with two 5D4 cameras. I'm sure that mirrorless is a great system but I specialize in Food, Product and Lifestyle images. The cameras spend 90% of their time on a tripod so ML has little to no advantage for what I shoot.

I take photos as a hobby but my pictures are versatile. From Family, some portrait shots, Wildlife/ Zoos, Macro etc. 2 years ago I found a gray market Canon 5DS by accident for 980 Euros from the UK, I couldn't resist. Last year I bought a used Canon 1DX with 200k resolutions for 700 euros as part of a Christmas sale. This combo gives me everything I could ever need for my photography. If I want to go extra small and light on the go, I still have a cute Canon Eos RP with the 16mm 2.8, 35mm 1.8, 85mm 2.0 and the 100-400 aperture 5.6-8- no more Gas to buy other, new or more expensive things in the next few years.

What is your comparison of that RP and 5dsr in terms of image quality in normal day to day pics of family and friends?
@avsthomas
@avsthomas 7 ай бұрын
@@sauravbasu8805 For “normal everyday life” I usually prefer the Eos RP. It's smaller and lighter and easier to take with you. You can see the exposure beforehand. The 26 MP is absolutely sufficient and the high iso performance is slightly better (but if the 5DS' images are scaled down to 25 MP, then you won't see much difference). I use the 5DS more for wildlife and landscape applications. Instead of using a very large and heavy lens, I solve the problem with the range with more resolution. In general, I think the colors and image quality of the 5DS are a little better, and a lot better when cropping. When it comes to absolute image quality, the 5DS has an advantage. However, everyone has to decide for themselves whether this is necessary and necessary for them. I'm happy to have both, if I could only have one of the two cameras, it would be the Eos RP - also because the new Eos R lenses only work for that, there are some good options there and the system is more up-to-date.

I switched to the GFX 100 from the 5Ds. The real push came when the main board in one of my 5Ds’s packed in followed by an unresolvable issue with a 70-200 and a rear element and board contact communication error on my original 24-70 all within 6 months. The parts for the 24-70 were like hens teeth by this point and extortionately expensive - I was told by my service agent that canon are now stopping support for most out of production DSLRs and EF lenses, parts which remain in stock for older products are all that remain, no more will be produced in favour of production line re tooling for RF products. Once spares run out- that’s it. At the time of buying the GFX there was no true successor to the 5DSr as you put it- for commercial flash photography they don’t make a better camera. The bonuses that came with the GFX system like built in focus bracketing, native 16 bit colour depth and greater dynamic range. Plus nice to haves like focus control in capture one to almost the same degree as phase backs and powered USB C tethering /charging all tipped the balance in the upgrade process. I picked up most of my Fuji kit second hand one of the GFX 100 bodies had ~2500 shutter actuations and was £4000 with 4 batteries. A damn site better than the £10,000 RRP. I hope your 5Ds & 5DSr bodies continue to put the hard graft in, might be worth a good look at alternatives before an issue forces your hand and a massive chunk of unplanned investment- speaking from experience.

Hi, I agree with you for all reasons you mentioned as I keep my 5dsr with 100f2.8 beside all my mirrorless and medium format cameras I have, because this sensor is phenomenal I believe for resolution, dynamic range, colours, and highest quality, BUT I cannot deny the lack of touch screen, electronic view finder to see what I take, and speed!
