My father left my mother for another woman when I was 8 years old. As a kid, I used to come home from school and watch MTV while I waited for her to come home from work. This song was a staple of the channel’s rotation back then. I bore witness to what he did to her emotionally, and listening to this always struck a nerve with me that I couldn’t fully grasp at the time. Thirty years later, I understand why. This is a masterpiece of songwriting for anyone who has ever felt the blunt force of betrayal, which is all of us. This is my mother’s song, and all of ours.

I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THIS SONG FOR 20 YEARS AND I FINALLY FOUND IT!! My mom played this song when I was a child and for the longest time I convinced myself this song didn't exist, all i could remember was how the rhythm for "i'm the only one" in the chorus went... I didn't even remember the lyrics, just her singing "one" really long and the beginning of the chorus. I heard this song on the radio today on a station that constantly cuts out, but I heard enough to find this!

Whether u like it when came out or hear it again 20 years later doesn't make the song any different. The song was good then, it still will be now. I grew up to 90s pop & I still love it. I cant find anything I like on the radio now. I listen to a mix station & hope they play sumthin good. I'd be delighted to hear this.

“Rise. It’s time. This moment has been a long time coming. You know that you’ve been chosen. You know you can’t keep running. Stop spinning in circles and start believing in the magic, of who you are meant to be. Spread your wings, and don’t forget to take flight. You’ve been growing them stronger since the start of your life. You only get one chance at this; so honey, let’s get it right. You have the power inside you to soar. Don’t ever give up the fight. Dig down deep and find it inside; all of this power you’ve taught yourself how to hide. Call it to the surface. It’s right there, in your mind. Only you can fulfill your destiny and purpose. Brave girl, it is time to fly.“

It never wears on! Since it’s release this song has been my #1 favorite female power ballad largely due to Melissa’s throaty, powerful persuasion to convince the listener of her commitment & devotion, regardless of the obvious pain & betrayal she outlines. The lyrics are incredible & perfect in their painted verse of pain, rhyme & unconditional loyalty. I love the ambiguousness to gender, even though we know she wrote this about a woman. Here is where Melissa artistically leaves interpretation open to the masses. The energy & phenomenal deliverance of her voice makes the listener feel every scorching line from the “fire” she would subject herself to, to the “drowning “ desire of her affection, to the forgiveness she projects throughout. It cuts right to our core & soul. The torment & tenderness she screams leaves me breathless & empowered every time I hear this! Simply the greatest female ballad ever written & performed! 💋💕🤗🕯

I used to karaoke every weekend, I was blessed to have a good voice and lungs and this was one of the songs I'd sing. I miss that so much,it was a way to release pain (all kinds of pain)but I can't now, I have multiple sclerosis and I've lost my vocal cords and I had major lung surgery as well, and that messed everything up! But love this song and love her! Good Time's!

Years, and years of self taught practice has given me the ability to sing this. You just need to feel it. I sweat, and cry. It’s a mess. 😂😂
