I worked for Volvo for 5 years and I’ve been a truck mechanic for 10 years, you don’t need to pre fill your oil filters. Once the engine is running the oil filters fill up very fast and it won’t cause any damage to your engine. That being said I’ve never heard of major engine damage caused by pre filling your oil filters either, the main thing is you’re changing your oil on time and using good oil and filters

head the pump holds oil so as soon as truck is turning over the oil is alreadu going to the filters. but 1-2 seconds of no oil going to the bearings wont be the end of them. they should have residual oil in the bearings anyways. i fill it up all the way in one go and then by time it sits for a couple seconds its less than half full and throw them on the engine. Never had an issue

You can make your own, DIY. Don't use a fuel filter. Several P/U diesel sites have kits you can change to what you need. I bought a marine fuel water filter at walmart that has the same filter threads as a coolant filter. Sorry I can't give you any numbers or brands as I'm in Thailand and all my stuff is in Texas and I'm just to lazy to look it up. I got my filter heads from the Cummins dealer they have a single filter head as well as a double filter head. Donaldson also has a single filter head. Good luck.

I’ve owned a trucking business for 20 years. My grandfather owned it for 30 years before me. We have 45 Tri axels dump trucks. We have Volvos Mack’s Western Stars internationals and freighliners. I can tell you Rusty we have never once not ever filled up our oil filters with oil. That sounds crazy to me. Fuel filters however, yes, you fill those up so the truck will start. Otherwise you’ll be priming or ether. We have a couple 2001 Freightliners still to this day that have had 2 motor rebuilds. Not a lick of trouble. It is absolutely NOT a Myth. You do not fill the filters with oil. I didn’t even know that was thing. To easily prove the point, put the filters on. Then fill the truck with recommendeded oil. Check the dipstick, pay attention where it’s at. It will be above full. Then fire up the truck for like a minute. Shut it off. Check the dipstick again, it will be at the fuel line. Magically the filters filled up.

crack the filters loose and then poke holes in them, fuel water seperator is filling up because bad fuel quality, if its black the injector cups are bad (most likely), amd volvo takes about 8 to 8.5 gallons of oil. and yes hand tightening is fine but peace of mind i go half turn with wrench. Make sure to lube the o rings on all the filters. and also fulls synthetic you should go about 30k miles and regular oil is 15k miles. you can definitely go over that but i dont recommand it as the oil breaks apart to much

It's your engine do it your way. It's been said you may end up putting dirt into the clean side of the oil filters when you pre fill them. I wonder. If you drain your oil and replace your filters right then and then start you engine there is enough oil left on the bearing and head to lube the engine until oil PSI starts. Pull the oil pan and see how long oil drips out of the engine. Nothing wrong with doing it as you have. I have done it both ways, no harm.

The reason you don’t have to tighten filters more than hand tight is because there’s no force to overcome the friction of the rubber seal and spin loose. Get some of that kill em stuff for the fuel tanks. You do live in warm climate so algae grows in fuel tanks.

If that is a fuel filter, the black will be the asphaltains of the diesel. No problem with that at all.

The reason you don’t use tools to tighten volvo filters is because you can crack the filter housing . Ask me how I know😂 I didn’t fallow the instructions and cracked mine. Almost $1200 to get it replaced.

@@gord2358 But a Volvo mechanic is surely under a good bit of pressure pressure to get the job done in as little time as possible, so that might be influencing his opinion there. The $300 question is: Which way does he do his own vehicles???
@dillonh321
@dillonh321 10 ай бұрын
@@DanEBoyd No. Anyone who knows how an engine works knows that oil is pumped from the sump into the filters. He does his own work to save money. This is a business. Less money spent is more money earned.
@DanEBoyd
@DanEBoyd 10 ай бұрын
@@dillonh321 Anyone who has changed oil filters and not put any oil in them, knows that an engine will make a bunch of tapping noises and worse, until the filter is full and supplying pressure. Where there are tapping noises, there is undue wear. And you only need to fill the filter maybe halfway, to have the engine start with no noises, and have the oil pressure gauge come up normally or extinguish the warning light.

I’m not hating here I’m a heavy mechanic my self but rusty as you stated in the start of the video saying you don’t know how your doing wrong cause you have been doing it for a long time I’m gonna say this that just cause you been doing a jobs long time doesn’t mean your doing it right your just doing it a way that works there is no right or wrong way of doing it it’s all preference but agree about the filters should only be done hand night cause they’re I’ll tighten them selfs

Another thing is yes like holes into the filters but not until you have loosened the filters first cause if you drain those filters and all of a sudden you find that the filters have seized on

Why the hell does it matter if there's oil in the freaking filters?! What damage will that do to the engine? The oil is for the engine being circulated by the pump from the pan. Who cares about the filters & what damage will a dry filter for a bit of time before the pump cycles it through there do?!
