Ask about the ponders family. Much would be a surprise to those new children of transplants.

Wow! Marshall is pretty eclectic for such a tiny little town.

It is. And I love the way its wedged between the mountain and river which helps to keep it small.

I really enjoyed your tour of Marshall NC....I grew up in Asheville but haven't lived there since the 80s. I'm looking forward to watching all your videos and revisiting lots of the NC towns I haven't seen in 35 years. Many thanks

Somebody may see this and know what I’m talking about but Marshall kinda reminds me an old rail road or coal camp town in Southern WV. the reason I’m at this video is because I always wondered what the actual town looked like coming through on the interstate. I live in Wyoming County WV and a few times a year come to visit my family in Hendersonville. I loved this video and thank you for the history on this town.

I spent a lot of time in this town in the late 1980s. I was living near Mars Hill for a couple years. I did some legal office work for that Stephen Huff attorney when his office was up that long staircase! I would walk to the courthouse and do title research of deeds for him. Spent many hours in the courthouse also researching my family tree as my ancestors were from the county in the 1800s. Used to have a lot of old men sitting in front of the courthouse back in the 1980s and 1990s. Had great lunches at the Rock Cafe next to the courthouse. Everything has changed. Used to be a pharmacy across from the courthouse on the corner that still had a soda fountain when I first visited in 1981! On the other corner there was a furniture store. The city library used to be in one of those storefront stores in an old dept. store building. The tan building that was a tattoo parlor was a gas station. They filmed part of the movie "My Fellow Americans". Try to watch it. It shows a lot of the town. The tall brick building next to the courthouse was a bank (First Union last I heard). The old jail is now a bar, restaurant, hotel (one room?) recently renovated. I was last there in 1997. It was still a real, working county seat when I left. Now everything is artsy, fartsy stuff. Thanks for the walk through memories.

no more old men sitting in front of the courthouse, only criminals .... Rock Cafe still open ....Pharmacy is now Zuma Cafe since about 2000. We had hollywood stop by again...a TV series (The Peripheral) was filmed here in 2020. and the artsy/fartsy pays the bills.

It's funny how it looks almost like a ghost town with hardly anybody in it, yet if a local finds out you're not from here, especially from out North, they switch their southern hospitality to passive aggressive behavior. Even though we moved from the North *because* we did not fit in and don't like their politics, but they'll assume whatever they wanna assume. All they care about is remaining a poor farm town and their biggest pride is being and proving that they're the OG natives. Love the town for its location, but the people not so much..
