No he is right. You are not getting the context in which he is saying this. It is true that India is part of Asia and so Indians are technically asians but the way the term "south East Asian" is used in western academia and media is done with a very specific intention to wipe out the Indian identity. Sham Sharma actually did a while video about it. It was quite eye opening.

Rajiv forgot that when they say us Indians then that means by our face and not culture and that include Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Srilankans as well. As a Black American female I have always been intrigued by this distinction. It was always confusing to me. I live/work/play in a very diverse sandbox and I have often wondered about what terminology may be offensive or acceptable. Thank you for this conversation. I feel like everyone should be recognized as they choose to be seen. If only we could erase borders.... Honestly, it is a matter of what label on the map is assigned to the location of your ancestry.

They are from South Africa so they are Africans, they are not europeans or asian. So India is a huge country with meaning others ones sharing the same culture but your are Asians like the Midle eastern. Asia is the largest continent (both by population and area) and it's populated by people that look different to each other e.g. Azerbaijani, Armenian, Georgians are caucASIANS (as well as Europeans). Indians are South Asians just like Arabs are West Asians and Japan, Korea, China, etc are East Asians. And Thailand, Vietnam, etc are South East Asians. Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, etc are Central Asians. There are East Asians, South East Asians, Central Asians, South Asians and West Asians (including the middle East). India is called so because of river Indus and funny enough it is in Pakistan (and not in India). Does that mean only Pakistanis are Indians? Are only the inhabitants of India (i.e. the country) called Indians? If yes, what are Pakistanis (if not Indians)? "Indian subcontinent" is PART OF Asia. Respect to all peoples of the world be they from any (part of any) continent. Please do not have an exclusive but rather an inclusive mindset.

Hope people realize that this racial categorization is limited,leaves out huge masses of people For ex.1.3 billion Asian Indians fall under the category ' 'Hawaiian or other Pacific Islanders' and if one is lucky 'Any other race'.'And even there one has to specify which race.Only because the creators of the system came from countries which had limited exposure to the subcontinent. Or usually only knew one type of people in each category.So it made sense to them at the time. So here's a question,what race are people from South Asia?Is there any term for them?It cannot be Indian that's a country,brown? That's a color.And then how does make a distinguish between Indians and Mexicans?Asian?after their continent,oops that's already taken..Always used to baffle while filling out forms.And what about inuits of Europe and. I am an Indian Malaysian, and Ronnie is a Malaysian. The whole notion about the movie Crazy Rich Asians, set in Singapore, was about showing how the East Asians should be included in the general Hollywood narrative. But in reality Malaysian Indians are constantly discriminated among other Asians, the fact that Ronnie is obvious to this issue is appalling. Also Singapore is racially diverse, upsetting to see ONLY two head wobbling Indian guards is rather upsetting as well.
