STEPHANIE!!! I implore you! please get yourself a Bootstrap mannequin! You are so young and you would get a whole LIFETIME of use out of your very own dress mannequin, in your own personal measurements. You've shown yourself competent and able to sew almost any sort of dress pattern so you certainly WILL be able to sew your own Dummy! I'm in my 70's now and I only got my mannequin when I was 60!!! If ONLY Bootstrap had been around 50 years ago! I would have made my mannequin in a HEARTBEAT!!

The dress turned out great! Love the contrasting blue! The fit is good so your bodice adjustments worked. I love that you include your mistakes!!! I’ve done the same things over the years and it’s nice to know I’m not alone. I wish there had been this kind of community back when I was doing lots of sewing. (1965-early 2000s)I was alone in my hobby. No one in my family or any of my friends sewed. They all thought it was great I did it, but I had no one to ask for help or just chat with about my passion. I learned everything in school or on my own. It so nice to see young people taking up the hobby.

Great job! I just have to add that pretty much anyone can take a pattern, cut along the lines, and sew according to the instructions to come up with a custom piece. However, I love the way you wing it and that is a compliment... I have done that so many times, and to me the fact that you can MacGyver, or in this case Frankenstein the pattern to make it do what you want just shows what kind of mad skills you have! 🖤✂️🖤👻🖤🐱

Many years ago when I was a child, my mother taught me to always fold the fabric, right sides together, when I cut it out. That way, all the pieces that needed to be sewn together at centers were already positioned correctly. We always washed fabric before cutting. In high school my sister put two piece sleeves into a jacket, backwards. Then my mother made me fix the mistake and finish the jacket because she was "upset". She got an "A" for the jacket and "C" for the skirt ! Yah, I have sibling issues.

As a long time member of the backwards pocket club I absolutely love this dress! I always underestimate the mental load involved in making 3D conforming shapes out of fabric. The mental fatigue and concentration difficulties from this are real. The "mistakes" made when tired, stressed, pressed for time are completely understandable.

If you're ever running out of fabric, just remember you can add contrasting panels! That's probably why the contrasting back panels for some skirts exist in the first place lol. The dress skirt would have looked just as cute with a teal back panel to match the sleeves or maybe 2 side panels or maybe a front panel. It turned out really cute either way!

I abandoned trying to sew a top in time for a trip because I just could not deal w/ the fba. My sewing guru mom even offered her help, but aughhhhh! But I am making a fancy handbag to carry things at my friend's wedding. Smaller project was much more doable, even though I have managed to make it complicated! Anywho....love how the dress came out, especially with a backwards pocket!!

If it makes you feel any better, I just accepted my first ever job seamstressing for pay. Three blouses, fairly simple pattern. My client, a local boutique, bought the fabric and all the supplies. I ripped a huge hole in the front of the very first one. No way to mend it and keep the blouse as is. So. You're not the only one facing chaos, lol.

The dress is perfection. Well done. Love those buttons. The angry man who hangs out in the corner of one's brain can get stuffed. I hope all is well with your Dad. In the meantime, try to be gentle with yourself. You also might consider putting up Amazon links because a Gandalf seam ripper and a screaming goat; your search skills are epic, and people need to have them in their lives, and you should have a slice of that action... By-the-by - I come fresh from research about mock-ups. Did you know that professional sewists take an average of five (5) mock-ups for every project. The rest of it is mostly - start with the bodice, do all the changes you need, then start adding components like sleeves and peplums. But knowing that the pros go through so many mock-ups makes me feel _so_ much better because my average seems to be nine - and that's without sleeves. Unfortunately it looks like it's not the greatest idea to skip the ironing on the mock-up seams... dang it. I love that you use the interfacing to do a dry run at what fitting changes you need to make. It's a good workaround for not having a sized mannequin or that tracing fabric stuff. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
