I am so glad you were part of the Secret Santa this year, because it meant I found your channel! ⏰ When I saw your waxed canvas tool holder I realized, "Hey! That's something I can do!" I am getting better at sewing and so that is within my reach. I have no training or interest in learning machining like what This Old Tony does, but I do enjoy watching his videos.

Removing rhe contents of the thing, and inserting your own tech is such a nice way of fitting electronics without having to worry too much about practical basics. I use it alot as well. Love the build!

I love that Tony has shown what he looks like (a "shootin' the poop" video, I think it was) but anyone not rehearsed in _the deep lore_ would only be familiar with his hands, so that iconography is what's used. XD

you could do an updated design where the power goes through the wire, allowing the battery(or power input) to be in the stand, that way the wheel part can be lighter, with other possible positives for the weight reduction.

I got a version of this back in the '60s as a Christmas present. No LEDs though -- it used a couple of flints to throw out sparks when it was spun fast enough.

Love it! I enjoy the mix of nostalgia with neopixels. It also looks like an extra challenge to get it to go on that new shape of track, which is a nice upgrade. Also that tool box is SOOOO nice! Happy Holidays! ❤⏰🎄

I am so jelly, I remember seeing the first DiWire at the Bay Area Maker Faire many years ago, and kept on trying to get my local TechShops (rip) to get some so I could experiment with them. Your project is perfect to showcase their machines, and the perfect amount of whimsical fun for TOT. I just gave my Wheel-O to my Grandson that My Grandmother gave me in the 1950's. I am surprised the shaft has not worn out. I can remember adjusting it to run faster or slower. One of the many exciting toys I remember from my childhood. jack

The one I had as a kid had the batteries in the handle and the power went up the two wires and into the hub of the wheel. there was a centrifugal switch that turned the light on when the wheel was spinning.

There is a secret to get the wheel to track properly on the track: the ends that roll on the track should be CONICAL in shape (about 60 degrees included angle), coming to a point at the outside ends. This causes the wheel to remain centered on the track without rubbing on the sides of the wheel. This same scheme is used to keep railroad wheels centered on the track. The wheel should be turned on by a centrifugal switch, which is activated by the wheel's spinning. That can be a pair of contacts with a small weight attached to the inside contact.

Very cool! We made our own DIY wheel-ios when I was a kid, using a commerical center thingie. Can't imagine how much cooler it would have been to have a cnc wire former! Very, very cool! 🕰️
