This fabric is magic! I made a light up ghost cape for my halloween costume out of this LED fiber optic material!

Je me demande ce que ça donnerait d'en faire une robe Empire, de celles qui sont en voile, en gaze ou en tulle, portées sur un "transparent" (qui pourrait être dans une fibre plus naturelle)... Enfin plus années 1820, pas la période drapée. Est-ce que cette couche intermédiaire serait visible à travers un tulle bobin ? (Je n'ai encore rien fait après avoir regardé la série mode Empire sur la chaîne de Temps d'élégance, alors je projette peut-être un peu.) Je pense aussi à une robe à la Française par que les lés sont plutôt rectangulaires... Est-ce qu'on peut en faire des manches gigot sans armatures ? À l'inverse, en faire un costume de science fiction un peu kitsch digne d'un film d'Ed Woods ? En bandes sur un tissu lamé argent ? Ou est ce qu'on peut l'utiliser pour des accessoires, genre un manchon

Id say next time you use it, have a chrome or reflective (mirror like) fabric under it so the the light can bounce off that fabric. That way it will enhance the light source to the eye.

in fact a simple white fabric could work since white reflect the light nicely, it will reflect less light than some kind of reflecting fabric but way more easy to find and/or work with and would still do the trick

This might be a good fabric for a kimono since the pattern is a number of rectangles. Also, a white kimono is a classic image of a ghost so it is perfect!

I would cut and wire large flower petals, making large peony like blooms. These could then be placed on a more conventional garment. They could be wired and programed in groups for a dynamic light effect.

This fabric seems perfect for accessories. A scarf, a belt, a hat, wrist cuffs or arm warmers. Something you wear on top of everything else (so it is not touching skin and getting dirty) and something small (so you don't have to carry too many of the mechanical pieces).

I would absolutely use it as the lining layer for a long cloak with a deep hood and probably cover it with a layer of organza to keep the plastic feel from driving me spare. Black twill or velvet outer layer so that it looks like the inside of Morpheus's coat, but as a cloak because a coat would require more fitted cuts and thus more bulky light wiring.

The cape looks like a magical jellyfish, so pretty! It might be a better solution to just buy a bunch of the fibers and weave them into a finished garment. The fabric seems at its best as simple geometric shapes. You could probably make cool scales and pieces of fantasy armor from it! Also, Nihilego cosplay? :D

scales would look amazing but would also be impossible because of how youd have to wire the thing, youd need a light source and connection for every single scale, I dont think it'd be possible

@@SpydersByte Hold on now, if you make the scales larger and use LED strips, it'd be pretty feasible I think. With the scales say, palm sized, you could layer far enough apart that they'd line up with the LEDs on the strip. Each strip is one pair of wires, so get the whole piece in series and you have two wires going to one battery. The only concern at that point is a power source beefy enough to light it up for an extended period of time. Even that's easy enough to get. A 12v rechargeable battery pack is like $30. Slap that on the back of a belt and bam, good to go!

A nice project. I especially like the ability to change the colors. A tip for processing the feiber optic ends. You probably have nail files or you use fine sandpaper. This allows you to file the melted ends flat so the light is less scattered.

I've seen several costumers use it with varying degrees of success, but it looks like it would a hassle. Also the black attachment points are rather ugly and I wondered why the company doesn't use matching ones. Are shrink tubes not available in white or something?

I'm sure white versions exist, though they are probably less common, possibly more expensive as a result, and I can't imagine there's much call for that option to begin with. The connection points would still be eyesores in white and they would still need to be collected and hidden, in part to protect them but mostly for wire control. Unless I'm missing a reason to leave them exposed?

@@commehter I think it’d make sense to have them in white on a white fabric because when you’re making elements to cover these connectors you’re probably making them out of white material. And that tends to be more translucent than darker fabric, even when it is meant to block out light.

I’m so glad you didn’t do a princess dress, because it has been done too many times with this fabric. And most creations looked kinda similar, which made me think before hand there could be huge limits to what is possible to create. 🙈 I really love your cape! I would probably have tried to create wings or a cape myself. Or a huge witch hat? 🤔

The project idea that immediately springs to mind for me, since the fabric works best in straight rectangles rather than curves, is an ancient Greek-style chiton. I think a glowing, ethereal-looking Greek goddess costume would be amazing!

A smart project would be something that will benefit from some of the cons: think stiff materials like starched fabric or leather or metal (neck ruffle, head piece, chest plate), rectangle patterns (kimonos, simple skirts gathered at the waist), sheer things (tulle, fairy wings, ghosts), things usually viewed in the dark (spooky, safety gear, night lights (kimono display on the wall as a night light??)), huge lightweight floaty things where the amount of LEDlights needed would be too heavy and use long sculpted tendrils of the fabric instead...

if you're looking to make something that might get used fairly often: a cape for a dog for when you take them on their walk in the dark; clothes for children to walk to school in in the winter (maybe just parts of a jacket, or as stripes down their trouser legs); a really small project such as a scrunchie?

It's really impressive how far lights in costumes have come in the past 20 years. Big budget movies like The Phantom Menace and Lord of the Rings required the actors to lug around car batteries under their costumes in order to power their outfits. Now we have fabric with lights literally woven in.

I'm sure it would be mind-numbingly tiring to do; but I think this filament fabric would be great for making feathers on a costume. Nearly 30 years ago as CostumeCon, a woman created a phoenix costume with each feather independently crafted and attached. Imagine if even just the edge feathers of such a costumer were made of this fabric?

I’m only half way through the video but so far you’ve done so much more than others that were also gifted this fabric. You’ve actually experimented with it!! Others have just made items that use the full length or width of the already assembled fabric. I think that with time you’ll find other amazing ways to manipulate the fabric to make even more magical items. I really love that you think outside the box and make things work for you!! I have been pondering a Sorcerer's Robe for some time, something that would light up at night when I am at my LARP. I walked past my friend as she was watching this video, and this is PERFECT for what I have in mind! The stiffness and properties of the fabric would actually work well with the pattern I am thinking of (I wouldn't need to weight it or such), so this is a "con" I can turn to my advantage! At first, this sounded like an absolutely fascinating idea. Like you could make a very extra, grand cape out of it. But to me, one of the things I like about a big cape is the flowyness. Sadly, it seems you cannot really achieve this effect with this fabric. Also, I think I too intimidated by the technical aspect of this fabric. But you really managed to pull this off and create a nice piece. And you gave us a good insight about what you can do with this fabric and what not. Thank you for this. Sadly, I do not really have a good idea what next to create.

Many people are commenting that this fabric would make an excellent lining to a cape. And perhaps not the full cape but just two inner wings that show the most. (And another strip between the legs) The outer cape can be as big and flowing as you want.

I was wondering all the time if one has to plug this fabric to set on the lights and I was surprised that it's app-controlled. 😄 At the reveal, I somehow thought another good idea to make a costume out of it is by making a jellyfish or other deep sea creatures. I'm not sure what I would make with that fabric, but I do know that there would probably be a lot of pleating, hand sewing, and possibly Asian inspired influences (rectangles). Really impressed with your problem-solving skills! I would have been lost trying to figure out how to work with such a technical fabric. (To b fair, I'm not much of a seamstress and even regular fabrics give me fits : ) It seems like it would be best for costume pieces that are inherently stiff and mostly flat, like wings. It might be cool to use the black for a feature that would be nearly invisible in dark surroundings when turned off, and then have it suddenly appear when lit up.

This fabric would actually be PERFECT for making the inner lighted layer of the hood hood of the ancients' robe from Final Fantasy 14! I've been trying to think of a way to make it, including just bunching up fairy lights in between the layers and hoping the fabric diffuses it enough. Not *entirely* sure I want to work with this fabric, but it's definitely given me some ideas! Thank you :)

Shrink tubing is also used in fishing to fix line, the fishing supply department may have a more useful range of sizes for this application.

It is widely used in electrical wiring, pretty much any decent hardware store should have plenty of sizes and colors, from 1mm in diameter, up to 5cm or more.

🤔I have seen this fabric used to make a princess dress, but while you were going through the “pros and cons” I had an idea to use as a night time curtain backing to give off soft light in the room of an evening it would be fun on the ceiling with the shooting star effects when making a universe for a little boys room. Instead of using it for a whole costume, I think it would work well for individual pieces you could use to accent a full outfit. Since it's stiff, maybe use it on a corset that you could wear with a sheer bodice.

If I were to use this fabric for a costume, I would make something inspired by the movie TRON: Legacy. Basically using only strips of this fabric within the costume made from other fabric. TRON essentially used black fabric with light up stripes.

From the way you describe this fabric and the cost I would love to see it used in accent to larger pieces. The ones that instantly come to mind are the lapels of a bright colors jacket, part of a "faerie" dress(imagine Glinda the good witch with parts that light up), or trim for a cloak instead of the cloak itself. Because it only shows up in darker environments I would want to use it in clothing that looks great not lit up, but outstanding once the lights come on. For me, when that cape turned blue in the video it was stunning.

I think an old fashioned petticoat would be amazing for chiffon type drape dresses to drape over, but maybe not specifically with "this" fabric. Fiberoptic strands in plastic are not very expensive by themselves (remember UFO lamps anno 2000?) and you already know "how to make it" - I would get strands a tad thicker and do horizontal wavy instead on a different fabric ♥ Xx

Nice video, very thorough and informative. Gave me an idea for a character's cloak; black robe, with hood, but can be lit up from within, leaving the outside black. Also, reminds me a little of original Blade Runner where the shaft of umbrellas were light sources.

I love this video. I learned so much more than from watching other videos on using this fabric. I would suggest using it for small things, like armor, where you could have more control of the material. It seems that bigger projects run into problems with cabling and light transfer.
