Never? I thought that was just normal practice. Sometimes it's more convenient than taking off and extension, sometimes you have a better grip on the socket than you'd have on the nut or bolt, sometimes the fastener is inaccessible... all kinds of reasons you might end up doing this. Especially if you don't have an impact or can't use one on the thing you're spinning.
@BetweenTheBorders17 күн бұрын

Just a little tip, whenever you file or hand sand something in the lathe, make sure to cover up the ways (is that the right term in english? I'm talking about the tracks where your toolpost and tail stock are moving about). Otherwise the dust might get in-between and act like sandpaper, thus you get more ware and tare
@alanclarke464617 күн бұрын
Yes, the term is "ways" or " bed ways"
@PaleoWithFries17 күн бұрын
that would apply to hand sanding, not filing. There is no "dust" when filing.
@nikkiofthevalley16 күн бұрын
@@PaleoWithFriesThere is, though certainly less than when you're hand sanding. Where do you think the material is going? Sure, most of it is being captured by the file, but some of it inevitably ends up elsewhere.

Much like a lot of people in the comments here, I showed up because I saw Inheritance Machining in the title. I've not finished watching the video - in fact, I'm only about two and a half minutes in - but I wanted to take the time to thank you for having subtitles. Because I have severe hearing impairment, a video having subtitles (and not automatic CC, because somehow, that's *still* garbage after all this time) makes it possible for me to ACTUALLY watch it, and so few maker / machinist channels do (edited to add that Inheritance Machining is one of the ones that does). So, again, THANK YOU. Those subtitles make a difference.
