I really loved this project! The glow-in-the-dark spin was a great addition that kept it from being just another river table. That being said, I do want to mention a minor detail. Your slab does not look like a burl. Your grain structure is very straight, and burl usually will have crazy grain structure and/or "eyes" depending which way you cut. Your slab is beautiful, and looks like that is due to a contrasting sapwood and some spalting. Still gorgeous, just not burl. Anyways, love your projects, and the creativity required to put a new spin on river tables at this point is inspiring.
@diyhuntress4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It is technically a “burled” piece of maple due to the figuring and the distorted edge. The detail in the grain is much more defined off camera (the one thing that sucks about filming things). Luckily, it came already debarked and cleaned up, so it didn’t have the typical features that someone is used to seeing before it’s ready to roll. I’ve worked with a few burled maple pieces before and this one definitely fit the bill. 😍

so, ive done some epoxy stuff and my process is always research first. Im thinking of doing glow in the dark so im here now and heres what i got so far. Glow in the dark powder is HEAVY, so it sinks. i had that in mind when watching this and it came up actually so im glad. My thought now is, always do a very thin thin coat of clear firt, let it set, then pour the glow in the dark resin over it so when you plane the bottom, itll come right up to that layer of glow in the dark, crazy idea as well is, thin table top epoxy clear layer, wait about two or so hours, and then a thin layer of glow in the dark table top epoxy so it sets thick and quick, wait three or so hours, then pour clear the rest of the way up.... NOTE, if youre doing solid color all the way up, this is risky because you have to get the thin layer and final deep pur layer colors perfectly the same or you will have a line difference from the side when done. (again, not a pro, just my inside thoughts out loud so do your own research too)

Very impressive job. Chapeau. I like your using kitchen tools in your shop. Really out of the box thinking. That was an expensive lesson with the leaking resin. You'll never make that mistake again. I wonder why "everybody" (I didn't see anybody do it otherwise) makes a river-table without a bottom. I mean, nobody can see if the river is half an inch deep or two inches. It would save a lot of expensive resin. I think I would cheat and route out the riverbed in the massive wood slabs (maybe two or more slabs glued together next to each other. The bottom of the riverbed I would impregnate with something that seals the wood in order to prevent leaking through and then pour the resin. In theory this sounds nice but I have no idea if it could work in reality as well.
@diyhuntress4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you! That could totally work! The only thing that would be different is that you wouldn’t see the resin go down the edge. But, totally possible!
@hansdegroot85494 жыл бұрын

@@EscobarStyle @Nancy J - Honestly, a lot of it is trial and error! I freaked out when I saw my mold was leaking (which is why I couldn't record)... using tape was a shot in the dark and I'm so lucky it worked! I like showing the mistakes because I am farrr from perfect! 🙈 As for tools, I started my with a hammer, a plug in nail gun (which didn't work), and my dad's hand-me-down chop saw.
