What I found works good on cleaning pistons. It's mixing simple green with Dawn 4x, putting it in a pot on the stove, bringing up just under a boiling letting then soak the pistons in the dawn X4/ simple Green pot for about 45 minutes and a lot of the carbon will just flake right off when you start cleaning. It's softens the carbon up nicely.

In the early 70s I auto crossed a '66 Sunbeam Alpine (2nd overall in the state of Colorado). The engine could rev over 7k rpm (yes, it was balanced) and was a daily driver. Every 500 miles or so I would replace the rod bearings because the 1725 cc and earlier engines would throw #3 rod. I cannot understand why so many of these professionally built engines blow up and the mechanics are NOT replacing the bearing inserts frequently. A year ago my Ford F-250 460 blew out a block heater and the engine got hot. I made repairs, changed the oil, opened up the filter to find NO metal, and sent the old oil out for analysis (came back OK).

Been there Kevin. Start off with a, I don't care project and before it's over you have done most of the work you would have on a much better motor and emptied out the shelves to do it. I may have not had all the rings but most are better than none. I am surprised you just didn't weld in a stud for the broken crank bolt. It only had to last a couple minutes. 😁😁

Hey kev. Hey when you think about it. Now you will show up with an engine that is good instead of an engine that was going to blow lots of smoke and not run right and most likely shit itself on the pad. That would not have looked good for your business. Every one knew that the last engine was a junker. And they would have known that this one was going to be too. But a god sent that you broke that bolt. Because now you have some kind of rebuilt engine. Still stock but some good bits that will help the poor old girl. Cain hard lad. Can’t wait to see you win.
