It processes Pyruvate and NADH, produced from glucose in the cytosol, into ATP which is the main energy-transfer molecule within the cell. In warm-blooded animals it's also what produces heat via proton leakage. It also produces fatty acids used in intracelular signalling, effectively acting as a secondary control center, it stores calcium ions, it regulates cellular proliferation and controls the lifespan of individual cells, it's responsible for the production of many naturally occurring steroids, and it is heavily involved in the development and function of neurons. Complex life as we know it, with distinct and organized cells each performing various specialized functions, might not be able to exist without the Mitochondria. And to think that all that is made possible simply because a species of bacteria developed to be able to live inside of another species of eubacteria in a symbiotic relationship.
