Oil changes....... over the years and several early oily messes, I have learned that the time preparing for the worse is much less than cleaning up afterwards. I now put down a piece of an old tarp under the bike to catch any drops or spills easily wiped up with some paper towels. Glad you found the problem before any significant damage was done! Good one John. Don't beat yourself up too much, you've joined the club. My recent oil change, I forgot the crush washer. That of course requires a do over, as you, for the life of me I cannot do an oil change without getting oil on the garage floor, I'm gonna have to bite the silver bullet and get some pig mats.

@billwilliams9527 "pig mats" LOL Hey Bill, I'm not familiar with those, what are they?

I also used to experience pain after riding for an extended lenght of time but what I do now is in the morning before we hit the road, I take a couple of Advil and that elimated the pain. Not on short rides around town but I am talking about on a trip where we may be riding 4 to 8 hours in a day. At 73 pains come natural sitting in one spot for a lenght of time but this sure helped me ! We love watching your channel . Thanks for sharing !

I'm glad it was just a minor fo-pa on the oil leak. I will have to start doing my oil changes next year. Of course, a 1-hour job will turn into 5. 😏 I really need to go back to the "Bone Cracker" myself. Mine retired years ago and never found another one. It's good your pain is gone.

Talking about a oil leak, today my nephews and I were going to go to Rabbit Hash Kentucky on a ride. The bike had a recent oil change. So all was good until I rode the bike one mile and all of the sudden I smelled something then I saw smoke. Hum looked at the dash no lights on. I stopped at a light and the smoke went away. Later it was really smoking so pulled in a parking lot with my nephews and stopped the bike. First I thought maybe the break was locked. Nope maybe a tire was rubbing as I have a tike. Nope then we noticed something leaking at the bottom of the bike. Oil! dripping on the exhaust pipe under the bike. Best drive back home as I was just over a mile away. Limped it back home parked it in the drive a few drips when stopped the bike let it sit and it no more drips It could be leaking out of the plug as it might not be tight that is the hope. Of course I don't have a lift so it needs to go to the dealer to check out the issue. A beautiful day lost but the oil light never came on and the bike didn't lose much oil so that is a good thing. Need to get it towed when I establish an appointment to get the bike worked on

Glad you figured out what caused the issue! I just did the 2nd oil change on my Spyder.... It turned in to a two day affair thanks to that Torquey Tommy fella 😅

Hi John & Miriam, sorry to hear about the oil leak but at least you know how to fix that issue. At least you can change the oil yourself and not have to pay a dealer to do it, they cost way too much for a simple job. 🧐 Glad you figured out the back pain issues. I use a chiropractor too for neck pain issues while ryding. Did you guys make it to Maggie Valley for the Spyder Rally? Ryde safe and God Bless Artie

It's easy to do I always stuff rags in there. Departure kiss yay. It's called a Spyder smile. Those bikes go cause some commotion. Every time at a gas station stop. I have dealt with back pain pretty much from my career on. Never went to a chiropractor. Have had some valuations and found out some herniated lower disk just from a life of work. Glad you are feeling better

My wife and I just got back from a 2600 mile ride on our spyders. My back was aching the whole way. Saw an Othro and said arthritis. Recommended medicine and rehab. Hope next trip is better. And people stopping you. Every place we stopped, people would ask about the ride and comment about the fun we were having.

Excellent tech advise John. I havent started doing my own oil changes on the spyder, YET. lol its still under the extendwd warranty and so far when it has been due for one, Ive also had the dealer perform an annual VA state safety inspection as well as a "nose to tail" once over. Next year I wiil take over the wrenching. 😊

But, just to check the oil you must ride at least a bit, then let it idle. I like to ride it about 50-100 after checking the oil "just to be sure" that everything is okay.

similar back issue myself. almost three years and several thousands of dollars with specialists and tests(endoscopy, gallbladder, mri, xrays, ultrasounds) for a stomach/back pain issues. last hope i inquired about seeing a physical therapist for a possible pulled stomach muscle hence all the pain in that area. she set me up with the therapist and withing five minutes talking with her she found the issue. she validated her suspicions after probing at my lower back. it had nothing to do with my stomach, but with a very very tight muscle knot the size of a dime in my lower back that was causing pain to radiate towards the front gallbladder area. six sessions along with stretching exercises and trying to rub the knot out helped but didnt go away. after three months i can manage the pain day to day with stretching. so i can see what you are saying about the medical processes and their greedy ways to earn their paychecks with little regards to their patients ultimate life.

I cut out some of the plactic so it wouldn't catch any oil when draining.

Hello folks, I have seen one mistake on this video, change oil when it warm, plus take most of covers off I know it means time but in the end it is best. Ounce when got the oil up to full, just let the bike run to warm it all up again and then check the level, this should take about 9 minutes to get everything warm again, you may have to add a bit. One does not need to go for ride to warm it all up. You can have all the covers put back on or not because you want to check for leaks. Ounce when you are sure it is full then go for a ride and ounce when you get home recheck it, don't let the oil cool because you we'll get the right measurement. Just things I have learned over years of farming and riding bikes. On my F3-S it takes me about 30 minutes to drain and replace the filter and the oil. So happy travel.

I may have missed it but before your test ride you wondered how much oil may have been lost. Did you check the oil level when you got home, and what was the result?

You could have put vacuum on the filler and removed the plug without a loss of fluid !
