A huge thank you to the Wizard of Oz Museum for allowing me up close and personal access to the original movie used dress! Visit them at wizardofozflor...

I have always loved The Wizard of Oz and when i found out there was a Wizard of Oz Museum just 90 minutes away from me, I knew the time had come for me to make my own PLUS SIZE Dorothy dress and blouse. But, being me, I had to be extra about it, by using 1950's vintage fabric, a 1940's vintage sewing pattern and 1950's deadstock cotton rick rack.
So come along with me as I try to recreate Dorothy's Wizard of Oz Dress but make it plus size!

For all of those people wondering why there aren’t a lot more of the reveal shots from Autumns At Oz, the fault was entirely mine. I had eaten something cross-contaminated with something I’m allergic to prior, and it was raging through my system. I was a horrible assistant / camera man / director that weekend. The fault is entirely mine. 😊

You did a fantastic job on this costume! You should absolutely wear it to a cosplay event, it looks so good. It was so kind of the museum to let you see the dress up close so you could really see how it was constructed. There were a lot of details that were essential to make the costume look real and not a Disney-bounding (Oz-bounding?) style of outfit.

Another way to reduce friction, put some scotch tape (the matt style, not the shiny kind ) on the bottom of your presser foot. The dress turned out so great!! As you know, 99% of people will NEVER see the mistakes. Only you, because you know they are there and that’s all your eyes see!! It’s just the human in us. We all do it.

I love the Wizard of Oz!! I live in Michigan near holland and it is said that L Frank Baum wrote the books there. In the summer of 2020 the township had the characters made up in metal and are available to see on the north side of the building. Kitty corner from the library is a park that has a very large flower book that is dedicated to L Frank Baum.

Ways to repurpose mock-ups: garment and craft item linings, smaller mockups (full shirt -> tank top, etc), pocket bags, interlinings/interfacing for smaller pattern pieces, craft item backings, and eventually (when the pieces get small enough) stuffing for craft items.

It looks like it was a super fun day for the fam. And your video is the best postcard, ever. You're computer/slash/sewing machine butterlies you hello and yells at you when there's too much lint. Are we sure the machines haven't taken over yet? In theory you're suppose to clean out the lint after you've finished a big project. Not sure if anyone actually does that. I love this channel because you show off your first drafts and you proudly wear what you make. Was the Dorthy dress perfect? No. But it was amazing! You made a freaking dress in four days! It was cute! You looked cute! This is what diy is really like, we have a vision and sometimes it turns out perfect and sometimes it turns out with quirks and the quirks are what makes the thing uniquely ours! I love that everything isn't movie perfect or something, it's realistic and achievable and chaotic and perfect. My perfectionism makes me hate sewing but the more I watch the more I want to dig out my machine and try again, to hell with it. If Stephanie can sew and chaos and look cute I can too.

Steph, you did a most FABULOUS job, work, alterations of the blouse and pinafore. I am just amazed the amount of work in the time frame it was accomllished. We must be soul sisters. I am a major procrastinator, anthing that can be put off will be 😂, and a perfectionist. Here is a sewing tip I learned when making my childrens clothes. There is a product, at this moment can not remember the name, that is double sided sticky tape that is washable used to keeo trims in place while being stitched down. When humidity is high, needle gets gummy, just wipe clean. But this product revolutionized my making of smocked bishop style dresses. As getting the bias trim for the collar to line up perfect to the top row of smocking can wreck the looks. I love you made yalls daughter a matching dress. I did the same with mine. Judy Garland was 1 of my favorite actresses, along with Lucille Ball. Peace, love and light sent to all💚💚💚✌

So frickin’ adorable! The puppets that you are, ‘not so sure about’ 😅 Look like they are very old and based off the original art work from the books. I can see the additional portions of the first book that are not in the movie. Like the emerald glasses on Dorothy. I have known about the park for a while now and knew that it has had a difficult history and glad it’s open even if just once a year. I was so excited you were able to adventure there. 😊 Mockups: I save them and depending on what it is (bodice shape) I will make a pattern block from it and store them together. That way I can always refit prior to reusing the block. Adjustments are easier that way.

I'm glad that the festivals are still happening. Back in my younger days, I managed a behind the scenes private tour of the house and the yellow brick road - nothing nefarious, the caretaker was super nice and I had my, at the time, charges in tow ( I was a nanny out walking the kids) and the park had been closed for a few years at that time. I still have a small piece of the yellow brick road.

I hope you and your family had fun at Autumn at Oz. My family went to the Land of Oz theme park when it was open in the 1970s, sometime in the first few years it was open as it was well before the fire in 1975 so I was between 8 and 10 years old. In 2019 my cousin Craig was able to get 4 tickets to the summer event at Land of Oz and invited my sister Eve and I to join him and his sister Angela for the weekend. It was amazing what we remembered nearly 45 years later about the trip to Oz we had taken as small children.

I've now watched all your videos and love everything you do. The only thing I keep wondering is why I never see you using the table attachment for your machine and why you don't use the knee lever. The table helps to keep your fabric much straighter under the machine. And I couldn't live without the knee lever as an extra pair of hands when you need to turn your material and want to keep it steady while at the same time lifting the pressure foot. I find both Bernina sewing machine accessories almost essential while sewing.

I made myself a Dorothy dress way back in the day, no pattern because that's how I roll. Not the attention to detail of yours, but then I didn't have the original to refer to. My favorite part was actually the shoes. Bought a pair of pumps at the Goodwill, cut bows out of cardboard, lots of spray glue and red glitter, then sealed with clear spray paint because the glitter was falling off everywhere. Did not realize how stiff they were going to become. The shoes did not give at all, and by the end of the night my feet were killing me. Years later, I cut the dress way down to fit my little niece, so it exists no more.
