A few points of feedback that I have personally: - This tool MUST BE **FULLY** OPEN SOURCE (or at the very least source available). This wasn't explicitly mentioned in the video or maybe I missed it, but it's the single most important thing. This is nothing personal against you or your project, but you have to understand that some random youtuber (no offense) giving people a random unsigned exe and telling them to run it as admin on their personal computer is a pretty hard ask, and it also promotes really bad OpSec practices. I want to be able to audit the FULL source code myself, or even compile the entire program locally on my machine. Otherwise I won't even consider using the tool, and I will actively discourage everyone else from using it. - Do not include your custom Raven apps in the "Barebones" preset, or add an even lower preset that only does the debloating. No need for custom wallpaper, no shell tweaks, no custom taskbar color. Just remove all the bloat and do nothing else. You could also add an "Custom" tier or something with a bunch of checkboxes, to let the user pick and choose exactly what they want the program to do on their system. Other than that this seems like a very nice project if it actually ends up delivering on all promises. Personally I've already ditched windows entirely in favor of Linux so I don't need this on my main rig, but I still might install windows VMs in the future so I'll def. keep an eye on this project.

The thing with "open source" is that you can still hide malicious code in there (like a back door), and if someone who understands how the projects works won't notice it and approves those changes, your "open source" project is now a malware. TL;DR: regardless of how it's distributed, malicious code can always sneak in if the developers aren't cautious enough.

I think the biggest thing I’d want to see, given you are saying this is a middle ground between those who don’t care and extreme power users, is very clear and straightforward documentation that lists *everything* this does to your system. Not everyone can, or wants to, go through the source code or carefully watch what it does, but at the same time running a program that changes so many things on your system and very much has the ability to do things you don’t want, malicious or not, is daunting. I’m not very keen on running a tool that simply “debloats” with little further information, but at the same time if I have to dissect what is happening I might as well just do it manually. I have been sparing with even using the CTT tool, even though I trust that it isn’t malicious, simply because there is too much opaqueness in what exactly it is doing to my system in a more technical sense. If I plan on using an OS for years and years, I want to know exactly what I’m doing when I set it up.

Another suggestion that I would have is creating a separate screen or dedicated mode for the advanced users that you were talking about, and adding toggles with a custom app menu that allows users to pick and choose what apps they would like to install and bloatware they would like to remove. Otherwise though, the tool looks fantastic and I hope to be able to try it out once it is fully done. It just makes it less stressful in general. 2. Add a custom profile option that lets you pick and choose what to keep and what to remove, or even have importable profiles for multiple installs. 3. And most useful, add a reinstall edge option. I debloated my windows install on my MacBook and at some point Arc browser which I use errored out and needed to be reinstalled, but I had no browser. If there's a way around this I didn't know what it was but i just downloaded opera from the MS Webstore (I wish that was gone though), redownloaded arc, and deleted opera again. Not having to go through that little dance and just have a single reinstall edge button would have been nicer but I get if this is a bit out of the scope of the project or something. Your presets should be nothing more than a baseline, you need options that do nothing but the debloat operations, and control of WHAT is being touched. This is way too 'flying blind' just add check boxes beside each 'recommended install' per profile for starters, and also a page for the individual debloat operations. It's fine to have an EZ mode, but folks who know tech aren't going to use it like that and therefore likely won't recommend it to others that are less savy, which is how that chain goes. It's not usually "Oh I heard this was useful, but it's not nuanced enough to be practical for me, so I never used it, but you might like it." You just need to appeal to both sides in a practical enough manner. Also of course opensource etc, access to inspect things and compile your own, all of that.

Pretty sweet, dude, solid work! My ONLY recommendation, since you have several apps listed under different profile options, offer up a "Custom's checkbox that allows you to select any of those apps under each profile. One and done, if you use your system for multiple profile types. For instance, need Gaming but want to add in Blender, Slack, and Chrome (didn't see Chrome on there). Regarding the spinner comment... What about a list of things to do, being worked on, and done? At least give the user some ideas as to how long it will take "7/13 tasks done", etc. Just a thought. Great job though!
@TotallyNotK012 сағат бұрын
That would actually be better than a spinner in my opinion, maybe even a progress bar. Noted, thanks

I'm so down for this. It's crazy how bloated windows has become. Great to see someone's building a debloater. You really should not touch the looks of the system though. Just remove the bloat but don't make things dark.

This seems like a great tool, but for the Gaming configuration (you said they were all basically the same just different pre-installed apps) you should leave the Microsoft store and Xbox app on the computer, I use them daily for many games since I own a Xbox, so having these apps not be Installed to play games I already own would make the experience slightly worse. And even if someone doesnt use the Xbox app they can still uninstall it whenever they want, there should be a option to tick if you'd like to remove the Xbox app and Microsoft Store or not. Other than that this seems like a great tool to use for everyone

When this is finished, I'm definitely going to share it with the IT shop I work with. For productivity and professionals, there should be a separate settings customizer GUI (like the one of WinUtil still present when the installation is finished) that users can toggle on and off apps, including Google Chrome, the GUI should save the settings, then the separate app to perform the actions should have no GUI, and just... do it. These two exe's and settings (likely .conf files) would hang around in a USB flash drive, or network accessible, to make the process for each computer super streamlined.
@jpbot0119 сағат бұрын
Maybe add a custom profile? Make it saveable to a file so that I can re-run it on new systems/re-formats. I like the idea, but it just isn't granular enough for me. I'm guessing you're using winget? Maybe add an option in the custom profile for a list of winget package ids to install. I like using CCT for that but it doesn't have options for all the programs I want and it doesn't really remove a lot of the built in windows apps, just doing registry edits. Maybe a custom profile option is the best way to balance it for simplicity and granularity?

you should add a progress bar to show people that some work is being done and your program isn't stuck. also, i would produce an output at the end with a comprehensive list of all the stuff that you deleted (for people who tend to panic if they don't find something anymore. in this case, you really want to make sure to the end user that nothing is irreversible). i would also generate a file output on the desktop and notify it in the app at the end of the process. some people don't know what the removed bloat was made for, so they tend to be afraid removing stuff in case "they will need it eventually, who knows". in this case you should point out the functionality of every software you removed from the system and how to reinstall it again in case they'll need it

i honestly think it'd be cool to keep the messages under the "installing talon" title. not only does it let the user know what it's doing, it can also give some reassurance to some users who can understand it as well. at the very least, there could be a check box to check whether or not to display the messages. overall very cool executable.

This is a really cool project! It would be cool if you could invoke a pre-install script, in OOBE, that does ``bypassnro`` and grabs the install for talon. Maybe you could even create a local admin account through the script w/ the``net user`` so the user doesn't have to sit through the (awfully slow) windows 11 OOBE process. Either way, I'm really excited to see the future of this project!

For feedback, I think it would be useful to have an option for a "Custom" download experience where you can just check all the apps that you want pre-installed, saving some extra time so you wouldn't need to find them with a browser. Hey there is no critism or shi but i have s important thing to say which many devs dont realize including myself. While we run those kind of programs, they are running but while you are connected to the wi fi, outlook. Linkdein etch WILL install, no matter what. Even a restart or a update may bring it back. My idea is to leave a txt file that shows base installed apps so everyone can delete the not base installed and not self installed apps, or a exe file that basically deletes specific apps, not like keep only base apps cuz this would delete our own installed apps, but a app that as example uses appxpackage from windows itself and uses the target system so u can include specific apps („xbox;MicrosoftEdge;MicrosoftTeams“) etc Also about why edge isnt uninstalled, apparently edge got a new path which as example christitustool dont know, it will debloat the old path but edge remains due its new path. Also for the new path u need good permissions
@GameJam2307 сағат бұрын
It COULD be nice to have an option to let people make “custom” profiles that they can use to automatically install specific applications of their choosing, but to avoid complications with users that aren’t tech savvy, I’d say you should just make it a command line tool where you can run it with a path to a profile file to install it. It’d just be designed for people who need to set up several systems but without complicating the process for normal people. Although, if I had to guess, I’m sure software already exists to do what I’m saying, and experienced individuals likely already use it.
