@@StephanieCanada"Looming deadline" is a very legitimate motivator for chaos brains. I've learned that I probably can't just give myself a "sooner" deadline. I will keep trying, BUT it's a success worthy of celebration if it works, and a thing to shrug off if it doesn't. I don't get to belittle myself for my brain being wired the way it is. I *can* try to make sure I block off my time with the understanding that I will end up on a crunch deadline. And give myself advance deadlines for the boring routine stuff like buying groceries, and sometimes meal prepping, so I can commit to the chaos and inevitable "things going wrong" that will ensue before an event. Sewing with Nancy makes the slide and pivot seem so strait forward. I watched that, and thought "Nancy... you've never met my neurodivergent brain... I believe you that it works, but I'm most definitely going to have drastically misunderstood something here..." and then I never actually tried it.

This video had me laughing out loud as well as experiencing flashbacks to my own sewing chaos over the weekend. I was trying to assemble a vintage style shirtdress, and not only did I have that same thread-chicken-playing moment watching my red thread quickly come off the spool as I was stitching...but I also had to rip out the entire waist seam because when joining the bodice to the skirt I somehow lined up one of the skirt side seams with one of the back darts on the bodice. It was a sad, sad realization. I'm still working up the courage to go tackle reattaching that beast--correctly, this time!

I cracked up when you brought out the Tack It! I am the recipient of my aunt's former sewing supplies. I took one look, shrugged, and threw it in a drawer. Looks like I need to dig it out and try it!. Every time I watch one of your videos, you pull something out of my past - its almost like kismet! You mocked an 80's prom dress pattern (vogue 1471), Yup, wore it, still have the dress and the pattern. You scowl at mermaid costume your mom made you (McCalls 9492) - Made it -actually not the mermaid, but the alligator which was an alternate view! Can't wait to see what you pull out next!

Thank you for normalizing making patterns bigger, and also normalizing being open about having to futz with it a bit. I LOVE that Tap It tool and its instructions. Mid-century how-to diagrams are just the best, and we should never have switched to modern style line drawings.

I love my Tack-It pattern marker. I found it in an estate sale box and have used it for many of my projects. And yes, I am absolutely sewing in chaos. We moved recently so much of my sewing room is still in boxes, I am helping make costumes for our High School's spring musical "Little Women", and am sewing your antique skirt pattern for a WWI activity at our high school February 29th.

When I worked with preservation librarians the things that would drive them crazy were: paper clips, tape, and ink that faded to illegible with time, which is why we used wooden pencils for labeling. Staples do less damage that big paper clips that rust.

If pattern companies regularly made my size in multi-line I would give it a go, but most of them tap out a size or two below me (unless it is another billowy t-shirt or other amorphous piece of clothing).

And they could use a second fit model for plus sizes so the arm scyes don't gape horribly but that is often more than they are willing to bother with. It's a lot of work for a home sewer and prevents beginners from even trying. Plus it sends the message that if you don't fit in the pattern your not worth designing for. Every human is worth it no matter their size.

The pivot and slide method works, but only assuming the original pattern would have fit if you were just the same amount smaller/larger. We all know the pattern companies lie. Nancy Zeiman had videos on this method that were very helpful. They’re on KZbin. I think they were called Pattern Finesse?

I am in the process of making a shirt from a vintage deadstock fabric which has proven to be a shreddy nightmare. I took a break for lunch and a video, so thanks for the chuckles. I have one more sleevil to go and I think it's just straight seams and hems after that. I'm determined to finish it today so I can wear it soon, and I'm a little more inspired now than I was when I sat down to eat lunch.

Nice Deadpool inspired outfit. I wonder if the colored marks don't wash off. That would explain why they advise matching the color instead of using a contrasting color for better visibility. I went to an auction last week in South Carolina that I think had the remainder of the fabric and supplies you didn't take from that estate sale. Tons of fabric 99% polyester. Lots of "Cloth of Gold". Zippers, dead stock patterns and batting. If it wasn't that shop it was a sister one open similar years. I got a bunch of poly lining and a couple of patterned bolts including a flocked dot. No idea what I'm going to do with it all, but couldn't pass it up.

To be fair, the pivot method didn’t work for me either. I bought a Gertie pattern in a size 14 (and technically I’m a size 18) and it didn’t work out. I was still pretty new to sewing so that might have been the problem, but I’m glad it wasn’t just me who struggled with it.

If I'm using an original vintage pattern piece that's been ripped I used archival quality tape (it's basically a thin piece of translucent paper with a sticky side that won't turn into acid).
