As a surgical/ER nurse my advise to all, the 10-25 seconds to put your safety gear on is far easier than the months and months of reconstructive surgery and recovery. I’ve seen far too many accidents that could of been prevented or injuries reduced if we only took that time to be safe.

Years ago, I was having trouble sleeping. I only got about 4 hours of sleep between two nights. I work in a sawmill, sharpening bandsaws. I went to work on my 4 hours of sleep in 48 hours and was changing the 50-grit grinding disc on my 4 1/2" angle grinder. Because I was sleepy, I decided that it was safe to leave the grinder plugged in while I changed discs. Just as I tightened the disc down, the grinder slipped, and the switch caught the edge of my saw anvil and turned the grinder on. In a flash, the grinder cut straight through my long-sleeved shirt and ground a swath into my arm. Lessons learned: 1) Abrasions HURT! 2) The grinder is ALWAYS unplugged when I'm changing discs.

back in the 90's I was laying under a car 1987 Plymouth Turismo, putting a exhaust on. I was under the car feet toward passenger side , head at drivers door. The car on ramps on the driver side front and back a cinder block under the passenger front and a bottle jack on the passenger rear. Well I tugged to hard on the exhaust and the car rolled back kicking the jack out and busting the cinder block. I was pinned to the ground. My knees caught the frame rail and it held my feet to the ground. That is what saved my life. .. my legs... the floor pan was probably 2 inches from chest. we had like no neighbors and the house was at least 50 feet from the driveway.... my wife did not hear my screaming because she had the washer and dryer running... when she came to check the clothes she heard me...she was hysterical ... I dont work anymore for mental health reasons and cuz ive got an awesome fiance that loves spoilin me like that... But one of my first jobs i ever worked as a teen in school still taught me the importance of proper footwear for a job. As well as the importance of regular safety checks and keepin areas clean (sadly neither of those tasks were mine there so i was too busy with my actual task to do such). So i was workin in the cook room of a cannery, doin some sorta QC on the cans (its been half a lifetime since then, so my memorys very fuzzy) and this had me rite between where the cans just got filled with boilin hot water and the liddin machine; meant to act as eyes to look for any unfilled cans prty much or ang debris (tho a machine wud doublecheck this later heh). Well, rite underfoot of me but under a box i stood on was the grates and a drain for excess green beans and excess boilin water to run off. And therein lied the problem, the beans wud routinely clog the drain bcuz of the bad design where the beans wud get stuck on the drainage chute. When it wud get stuck, the floor wud flood under my box. I had a simple fix which was to stick a can under the chute tor raise it off the ground. Well, id just got back from lunch and not checked that as it turned out the janitors cleaned it off. For the first half hr things were fine and it all drained rite at first cuz it was empty, but by an hr in it had started to flood down there; which i found out when i slipped (cuz of dyspraxia, i legit can trip on air; wasnt even anythin that tripped me up, just my whole body coordination doesnt work sometimes) and quickly stuck my foot down to catch myself and placed my sneakered foot rite under the part of the chute that the boilin water was overflowin off of. Ended up with blisters that lasted for a few days and made it impossible to wear shoes. I cudnt work til the followin Tuesday, and it happened on a Thursday evenin. Luck wud have it tho it meant i got the weekend off and was able to still go to the local corn festival, which was a rather corny tradition of mine :P So like, i was actually glad i burnt my foot, esp cuz when i got back they had welded some shit together to prevent such from happenin in the future. It was that simple of a fix but just wasnt an issue they knew about to fix. Ofc, as id find out at later jobs... Even when they know somethin is a safety issue, that doesnt mean theyll fix it necessarily; unless and until forced to, far more often than not. But that cannery was actually a halfway decent employer that abided by the law instd of just payin the fines.

The car slipped off the jacks and the sharp metal strip that goes around the wheel well, punctured his heart...making him a 'late fiance'. He had no wheel chocks.
