I used electro etching on my last tsuba for my most recent katana....not sure it is the best way to engrave, but, after hours, it gave a nice looking finish (after I cold blued the tsuba.)

Its called a high frequency blade "hf murasama" the blade vibrates extremely fast that it weaken the targets molecular bonds, so it makes cutting everything very easily.

Which felt better to use, this grip or a standard wrap? And have you given any further consideration to attempting a legitimate hamon for a build? Many modern smiths just use refractory cement or satanite instead of the clay.

I must say the soft rubber felt pretty great in hand, but I still love leather ito wrap the most! As for Clay tempering, the only speed bump is to make a quench tank big enough with a see through side to show the sword curving during the quench. I haven't found a good plexi glass like panel yet that's big enough and doesn't cost too much money :(

@@JumboRadish I have never handled a leather ito covered tsuka, but it looks really nice. I refrained from getting my swords with leather only because I worry bout it stretching and/or cracking. There is a synthetic suede called tsunami that I hear is amazing and holds up well. But by the time I had heard of it, I had already gone with japanese silk. I am glad you're considering doing a hamon build, but I do understand logistics is playing a part in holding you back from getting it done. Maybe do a contest or fundraiser thing where you give away something you made to help cover the cost? Could be worth a shot.

@@tainowarrior5781 I forgot to mention, there is a caveat to leather ito! It has to be premium real leather ito. I have A LOT of experience with leather ito, and have come to realize that there are two main types. There is the cheap budget leahter ito that is really thin and cracks and stretches, which is the easiest to find all over amazon and ebay. And then there is the "premium" leather ito, that's thick and holds up extremely well. I have used premium leather ito on swords literally decades ago and it still holds up today, maybe a little stiffer though (just a little stiffer!)
