this guy is criminally underrated.

Smoke is fine because it is subtle but I'd look for an alternative for any heavier use. I love the pink sparks! Also, I think your brother might be a genius.

Yes, he is very smart! However, that photo may have been a childhood photo, so he's not quite the child-genius I presented him as 😆

A/B testing is great! But if you’re doing going this route, you need 1000x increase in clicks to see valid differences in conversion. Fun looking game!

Thank you! Unfortunately I didn't have 10x the marketing budget to throw around on an A/B test. Haha

technically the new juice didn't make a difference to your trailer analytics, but just from looking at them, i know which one would hook me way more. you were right when you said the new effects add a more chaotic feel and i think that comes through in the updated trailer

That looks good. I would be one of those that prefers to not have screen shaking. As an alternative I would suggest a color change around the effect or in the case of any kind of damage effects to have a translucent ring of color around the whole screen. That language looks vaguely like JavaScript, but the lack of parentheses around conditionals is weird.

Nice work! I like the green particles that drops stuff as it flies. The math and code for it seemed CRAZY 😮 i think in Unity this is a particle sub emitter, but I didn’t try it yet. But you inspired me to try it for some of our ranged enemies as we have a similar perspective in our game, Space Chef. Keep up the good work, looking forward to more devlogs! Cheers!
THIS IS AWESOME! Defintiley getting this game when it comes out!

Nice video! Keep it up, you def. deserve more subs!

Yoooo solid update! Your dedication to get those particles looking good was wild with all that math but it adds so much to the feeling of the game. Personally I think the smoke should be hand animated just fit with the rest of the aesthetic but overall still good!

Thanks! That's what I'm thinking about the smoke too. I'll have to mess around with that and see what I can come up with.

Since your game seems to be using pixels as an artstyle rather than a resolution I think the smoke is fine. Hard edges that break the pixel scale tend to be more jarring to me than transparent effects generated in code like lighting, smoke, and reflections. Tinting parts of pixels differently is less sinful than cutting them in half.

Love the effects you added, I was wondering what happens when the player gets hit. There are definitely tons of different ways you can go for impactful effects, although I think I noticed some lighting changes happen when the player is hurt. Like the edges of the screen getting darker. In the past I've had some games where I do screen shake on getting hit, or other games where I pause time briefly to really give a sense of impact

There were a couple things I forgot to mentioned that I worked on and one of them was that vignette effect. I did mess around with some slowing down/pausing the game temporarily but I haven't landed on anything yet. I should probably add a health screenshake when getting hit. I believe it shakes a bit on impact but I could add more. I also want to add an audio filter that cuts out the highs temporarily while you're hurt. Call of Duty style.

So marketing professional here, 1k impressions is a little too low of a data sample for A/B testing, you got the usual natural conversion rate, maybe niche more on the target audience specifications and maybe let them tun for at least 2 weeks? that should improve your data and keep the cost at a minimum
@Niles_Games2 ай бұрын
That's good to know. This was mostly just for fun, but if I decide to start putting real money into marketing I'll keep that in mind 👍

I would say the smoke is not really consistent with any of the other art in the game. I'm not sure exactly what I would replace it with maybe something like a spark fizzling out? Anyway the game looks super dope I love the art and it looks really fun to play!

Thanks for the feedback! I think I'm going to try some pixel art smoke and see if I can make it look good that way.

I think it would make a difference if you updated your Header capsule image to better suit your current look & feel of the game

I like screen shake but to invoke it on every shot is definitely too much
@Niles_Games2 ай бұрын
It certainly could be. I can always pull it back if it's too much. I'll make a note to ask playtesters about that.
