Welcome to Project Kurt!
Dang, this has certainly taken on a life of its own… Where do I start?
Do I talk about the 3D-Printable Poke Ball design I made?
Or about the custom Poke Ball designs I printed?
Or should I mention I made a model that you can edit to make your own designs?
Or go into the Poke Ball history KZbin series I’m in the process of producing?
Well, I should probably let the video do the talking, but essentially, what started as a self-imposed challenge to create a 3D-printable Poke Ball that opens automatically and has no external hinge became a self-imposed challenge to create my own custom design, which then led me to create a model for other people to edit and create their own designs. Now, I’ve just gone all in and am on a mission to design and chronicle the history of every Ball that has ever seen use in a main game, all the while collecting and displaying everyone else’s designs in one easy place. So yeah, chapters (timestamps) below, followed by all the other links and crud that I reference in the vid.
Enjoy!

I just made one of your pokeballs this weekend from Makerworld. Just got my printer last week. It came out great, though I forgot to support one of the half-domes and maybe the last dime size portion at the top went a little awry. Then I supported the other half and it was a pain to remove, so I'll have to work out those kinks. Saw a YT short leading to this post and here I am, with a thank you. Kids and I love it. If I make any tweaks, I'll be sure to follow these guidelines for sharing, etc.

Thank you so much! Glad you liked it. I used tree supports in Bambulab's Bambu Studio and they popped off pretty nicely. I'll be making and uploading more designs so feel free to check back if you're interested!

I found this while looking for pokemon models for a gift idea for a friend and I got so excited to print these in the future. However, I had a few questions about printing these. 1. Do you have to use fusion 360 for editing the model? It's a bit out of my price range so I tend to use blender to sculpt for 3D printing. 2. I wanted to use this as a container for a little display, and I bought a model to put in the display. Is there anything in particular I need to keep in mind when designing the display to go in the pokeball?

Thanks for watching! 1. You don't have to; any 3D model editing software that you can load the files into can work. I just made it in Fusion 360 and therefore it would be a little bit more convenient for users to use the included sketches to cut out shapes to fit the model, to see exactly how the hinges will move, etc. But of course, if you're savvy enough with another program to edit the .stl's directly, go for it! Side note, Fusion 360 for personal use is still free I do believe, and can be downloaded here if you so wish: www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/personal 2. Assuming you're fitting it into the bottom, the biggest thing would be to make sure that it doesn't obstruct the hinges. You'll be putting a rubber band around the left, right, and middle hinges as well, so that needs to have space to move when it's opening. Also, the little latch the button hooks onto needs to be kept free, of course. Other than that, you should be good! I tried my best to make it as simple as possible to make it as editable as possible, so hopefully it won't give you too much trouble. Overall, feel free to contact me if you have any more questions, and if you make anything, I'd love to see pictures posted to whichever site you downloaded the models from!

Replying here because I managed to hit "Remove" instead of "Reply" on the studio app so I can't notify you on the Heavy Ball video 🤦, but yeah, I had a great crisis trying to figure out whether to include the back nubs or not, so I just made both versions printable. And I can do the Fast Ball in a couple vids; I already have the Master Ball in the works! I've got a queue lined up of requests at this point but I'll get them all eventually.

@@carlthepumpkinman Hey there! Thanks for your input. I got all the pieces printed at my local library recently and it's so cool to finally have it printed! However, I have run into a bit of a problem. I painted and assembled all the pieces and when I install another rubber band across the back hinge, the pokeball won't stay closed! I don't exactly need it to auto-open (despite how cool I thought it'd be to open the pokeball and see the display on christmas day) but I was wracking my brain to try and figure out how and why it wouldn't stay closed when it has the rubber band installed across the hinges. Do you think the thickness of the rubber band makes a difference? Or do I need to modify the button's closure piece somehow?

So if it won't stay closed, that means that the button isn't latching. As you can probably see, there's a notch in the button that latches into place in a little nook on the bottom. If it's not staying shut, that means that either 1. The button's notch has something in it that's preventing it from latching on. Sometimes a bit of plastic can get stuck in there, so if you remove that, you should be good to go. 2. The notch isn't getting low enough to actually latch on. If you close the ball, and the button itself doesn't pop back fully out, that means that it's probably not closed far enough to actually hook in place. Sometimes, the part where the support material connects to the bottom itself is a little bumpy, and it prevents the button from closing all the way. 31:50 on the vid talks about these two tips. Granted, it talks about sanding the top down, but it's the same concept; just on the bottom instead. If you have any more questions, let me know!

@@carlthepumpkinman Got it. I'll give sanding that down a shot and see if that makes a difference
