Dude I love plex !!! I got a homie who religiously downloads all new movies and old movies / tv series. and he lets me get on his server . Love how they sort everything and provide meta data / reviews. Definately a game changer

Yeah totally! I really enjoy it, feels like I have more ownership over the streaming service.

That is bad ass! I love those pre-rolls. I used to use Plex, way back in the first days of cord cutting. Personally, I don't watch hardly any movies or TV. But my wife does and she's narrowed down her subscriptions to where dealing with Plex wasn't really necessary. But it does look like something fun to mess with.

Been Plex Pass doing my own media server since 2016 I have a rather large collection and I just like not having to worry which streaming service has the rights to what ever movie i want to watch at that moment.

Very cool I have to research pre-roll now because I have wanted something like that for so long.

My whole dvd collection is now in the attic and is still growing. Gotta keep physical backups

My philosophy is keep the ones you really like but there are a ton I don't need physically and would rather cut down on clutter.

I would recommend keeping a hard copy for the legality of it. There is a case in international court that covers copywrite (you can look it up) sometime I can remember when but maybe like 2010 or so maybe I am off. The original ruling was challenged and as I read international courts said if you own content (a movie DVD for example) you have every right to back up that content (digitize it). But keep in mind the phrase "if you own it" so if you are concerned with the legality of it all I would suggest you retain your hard copy and to save space buy a large CD/DVD binder and toss the bulky individual cases. But hey thats just me.

can i customize thumbnails and file names? for example i put a season of Beavis and Butthead on my Plex but the whole season is the wrong thumbnails and wrong names for the episodes. can i change that? mis match i think its called...

Click on the three dots in the bottom corner and select ‘fix match’ that should sort your issue. Also if you click on the pencil ✏️ icon you can edit info and thumbnails in there, you’re probably already sorted but just in case!

Don’t convert MKv files into MP4, eeegads… Plex handles MKV just fine and so do all your devices. Using handbrake to transcode your MKV is fine if you are trying to simply compress the file size down (accepting some degree of quality loss) you can leave everything in MKV format.

@joshisterrific Would you mind sharing the first portion of your preroll? Specifically, the "wow what a difference" clip. Given that mine pretty much is called the same, I'd quite like to use that, if you don't mind.

Awesome! I'm away from my computer so I can't upload it for a bit, but here's where I pulled the audio from. You could take this, chop it up and maybe use it for some pre-roll. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e56rZJ9-gKeVpdE

If you're streaming this to yourself over the internet, won't you be exposed to the mpaa? And get a takedown notice from your isp? Watching your own movies from your Plex server? Get a copyright take down claim notice from his ISP when he was downloading his " movies"

The law is murky, but there isn't technically a law that states I can't copy a DVD that I own onto my own device. If I were to distribute my media to others then I would certainly be breaking the law, but I'm not distributing it. It is on my own private network.

legality aside, how would they find out anyway? it's not being streamed on a public website, you connect to the IP address of the server or tunnel through a VPN. all the ISP sees is that you're transferring data
