For a small dealer trying to make money by selling cars at Mecum or Barrett is almost impossible. First you are competing against above average vehicles so if yours are OK then you are in trouble - second there are too many fees and transport costs. Your best bet is to sell from your home turf on Cars and Bids or BAT. Cars and Bids has no seller fee. You have a big audience and the car is sold in 7 days.
@TheBBodyBuilder10 ай бұрын
The top of the Mopar is called a Mod Top and yes that’s original. Sorry your gamble did not pay off…but now you know. Also if you are honest with yourself you picked up some questionable cars and tried to sell them for a profit at Mecum…you did not sort them out mechanically or cosmetically. Source cars from Florida, Texas, California, Arizona and sell them at home…unless you acquire a nice speciality car on the cheap you are unlikely to ship cars and pay auction fees and still make a profit.

The cars story is unlike any other car as it was removed from a salvage yard in the 90’s, passed through a few owners until Darrin purchased it along with the new NOS top back in ‘16 and it debuted after completion in Spring 18 in Minnesota. Until that car, I had never seen an A12 go beyond 150k.

You know that feeling when you pay considerably less than a vehicle is worth and you know you are going to make good money when you sell it? I know you do, it’s why we do this. My exposure to Mecum auctions is only from YT channels, but one thing that is very evident to me is that Mecum has collector cars and speciality cars in restored or proper retail condition as the main offerings, most of which you bought were not anywhere near those conditions. When I saw what you were buying in the leadup, I was stunned you would think that stuff in those conditions would sell for more than scrap. The ones that make money from these big auctions are the auctioneers. You had half the right idea, buy them in Florida and transport them up to your yard, clean them up properly and sell them there.

As for your question about the roof. Yes in '69-'70 they came out with the "mod top" on dodge and Plymouth cars from the factory. Obviously they were ahead of their time because they are desirable and rare because they didn't sell many with that option. The nice thing is that you were smart enough to not just blow the cars out at a big loss and sell them yourself. I've been trying to figure out how much you've lost but I don't think it will be that much after selling them yourself. Big hello from the West Coast of Canada. Man, I am truly sorry you lost that much. Forgive me but there are some things you failed to mention. You lost a LOT more than you said. Air fare, hotel, expenses etc. And most importantly, as a small business owner, I too often forget to calculate my TIME. I am a employee at my own business. My salary/hourly rate MUST be calculated into any profit or loss. That said however, you were able to offset that by quite a bit with the videos and youtube views. So that's a plus. Also, the knowledge you gained is priceless. Some people pay thousands and thousands for a class on this stuff, you saved money learning from your relatively minor bad mistakes. Education, too, is priceless. One last thing. I was 50/50 on the camera crew. Now, I think i like it. Maybe you can hire some young man/woman to just follow you around and film you all day. Then let your editor assemble the best from that. Pricey I know. Only you know if your channel can justify the cost. But I honestly believe it would be a growth opportunity. Either way, best of luck man, and again sorry for the loss. Car market is so screwed up right now it's just crazy. God Bless.

For those that don't know, the bid goes on is a 21 day affair. They hold the vehicles (if you want them to) and people can still negotiate to buy them. It's a bit of a high pressure thing done by Mecum, but it works. I've purchased a number of vehicles after they crossed the block. In fact, I'd estimate that I've purchased 30% of them after they crossed the bloc - specifically speaking of Mecum.

Great series to watch. You put in a lot of effort to make some great content. If you do this again, do one or two cars that are really special and you know you’ll make good money on. And enjoy the auction instead of stressing over it.

I thought he said the minimum number of cars to participate was 5.

That is when you need more protection. The clouds filter the UV rays and burn you faster.

I've been to Florida many times and I have never gotten in and out without getting rained on. Being from the REAL "sunshine state" (AZ), Florida's nickname always gives me a chuckle.

Had no idea Mecum's fees were so high....even on "cheap" cars. That's a loosing battle going into it when you have a car that's only going to bring $15k or less

I have an 83 280ZX I was going to take to the B-J auction that is going to premier here in New Orleans, in a few months. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get it in and registered in time, so I'm going to have to try and sell it elsewhere. I'm not sure what you need to do to get a car into Mecum, but there is a lot of hoops you need to do in order to get your vehicle/s into the B-J auction arena.

Worth a try and few lessons learnt. Times are a lot tougher now for this part of the average Joe car market.

Hi, love your channel. Wanted to ask you a question about fraudulent activity from another dealer and what you would do. There is a dealer in SoCal that has "bought" 50 cars or more from people and stiffed them with non payments, bounced checks etc. The crooked dealer has sold or is in process of selling the cars at wholesale auctions like Manheim. The affected people have reported the dealer to Better Business Bureau, DMV and contacted lawyer and media. They have also contacted police who will be not take police report or any type of investigation. The police basically said they don't care about a crooked dealer stealing half million worth of cars, call a lawyer. You know the auto wholesale world, is there anything else to do?

How were the stiffed with non payments?
@puckhead360710 ай бұрын
@@mexicanspec bounced checks, wire transfers that never came, no response from calls and emails, then everyone disappeared and all offices closed, all the while we can see cars at dealer auctions all over western US

A large bounced check is a crime. I am surprised the police won't pursue it. So the title was turned over when a check was issued and the check bounced. I would think the auction would have to be notified that the car is in a legal situation and if anybody buys it they will also be in that situation because it is essentially a stolen car. If there is one thing auctions don't want is problems with their buyers. Once you notify them of the situation they are on notice and they must act or be held liable as well.@@puckhead3607
