I made the Horus Heresy... DIORAMA!!

Today we're going to make a Warhammer Horus Heresy diorama.

For those who may not be familiar, Warhammer is a tabletop miniatures game that involves building and painting armies of fictional characters and creatures, and then using them to battle against other players' armies. The Horus Heresy is a specific storyline within the Warhammer universe, which explores a galactic civil war that takes place thousands of years in the future.
Now, onto the diorama itself. A diorama is essentially a three-dimensional miniature scene that's designed to tell a story or capture a specific moment in time. For my Warhammer Horus Heresy diorama, I decided to recreate a battle between two armies - the forces of the Emperor of Mankind a legion of White Scars, and the traitorous forces of Horus, one of the Emperor's former allies who had turned against him.
To create the diorama, I started by building the base of the diorama out of XPS Foam and air-drying clay. once the scene of the diorama had dried I added plaster rocks to add some context and texture to the desert scene.
next, It was time to test out some paints! I tested out some enamel paints including streaking grime, winter streaking grime, dark brown wash and a black wash to decide how i wanted to paint grim dark White scar space marines.
With a base coat of utheran grey, it was time to paint the grim dark white scars. after painting all the trim in decayed metal I added a wash of dark brown enamel and removed it with winsor and newtons sans door. afterwards, i wet-blended his shoulder pads with 3 reds.
all the necessary miniatures and terrain pieces. I carefully painted each miniature by hand, using a variety of techniques to create a range of textures and colors. I also customized some of the miniatures to make them unique, such as by adding additional weapons or armor.
Once all the miniatures were painted and assembled, I began to arrange them on the diorama base. I used a combination of rocks, sand, and grass to create a realistic-looking landscape, make the scene more dynamic.
Finally, I positioned the miniatures on the base, carefully arranging them to create a sense of movement and action. I used some miniature explosions and smoke effects to add to the sense of chaos and destruction, and then took some photos of the finished diorama to share online.
Overall, I'm really happy with how the diorama turned out. It was a lot of work to create, but it was also a lot of fun, and I'm proud of the end result. If you're a fan of Warhammer or miniature painting, I definitely recommend giving diorama building a try - it's a great way to bring your armies to life and tell some amazing stories!

If you struggle with contrast paint, id absolutely recommend army painter speedpaints. theyre closer to a gel than a wash, which makes them much easier to shmove around

For parts like capes your best bet would be to start with a dark base coat (black for example) then Dry brush a grey colour, then do a white ish dry brush on the raised edges. After that apply a contrast paint to finish. Looks really good otherwise :)

Awesome! How do you get into enamel washes and streaking grime? What do you use?

Thanks! For the basic enamel I'll use streaking grime or a brown enamel wash by AK. I mainly use it to get shadows and contrast Into the recesses. I'll then wait 10 minutes or so then get out either a micro fibre cloth or cotton buds dab them in Windsor and Newton's oderless solvent. This will re activate and remove the enamel all over the mini until I get the look I'm going for. I find it quite hard to put into words how I do it but I'll make a video on it soon!

Great video, Really like your part on the washes - I’m planning a white armour world eaters for heresy, what did you prime the praetor with and did you use varbish before the enamel wash? Looking into oil washes myself, thanks!

Thanks! I used white scar spray from GW and applied the wash straight on it. If its easy to apply the varnish you can probably save some time but it will only be in the crevices. If you want to stain some of the pannels like in the video just apply it straight on it and re highlight any parts with ulthuan grey. Hope that helps! Not sure if I put it in the video but the wash I used was ak interactive "wash dark brown for green vehicles"

Hi, I generally buy my foam off of eBay. The seller is called "underfloorheatingstore" the foam I used in this was a 50mm XPS insulation board for about £16. I prefer the grey foam but the pink stuff is just as good!

Just like the Templar diorama... It's empty. It feels like three marines on an empty planet. What I would have done here is use the bodies of many Sons Of Horus in piles, rubble is everywhere, and these three guys fight on.
